  • No Option to National Unity, Says President

By Mathew Dadiya, Abuja

Traditional rulers under the aegis of Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers led by the Tor Tiv, Prof.

James Ayatse, have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to support the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who were victims of the herders-farmers crisis in the state.

The monarchs who made the appeal on Wednesday, when they paid a courtesy visit to the President at the presidential Villa, Abuja, pleaded with the federal government to extend similar support given to the IDPs in North East to the ones in Benue State.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that he was fully committed to the unity of Nigeria and would devote all his time and energy to promoting it for the benefit of all citizens.

The President made the declaration when he received a delegation of Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers led by the Tor Tiv, Prof. Ayatse.

Buhari called for better appreciation of the historical relationships among various communities in order to sustain the nation’s unity.

He stressed that ties between the Tiv and his own ethnic Fulani stock, which predated him and the current generation.

He urged the monarchs to help in ensuring peaceful and harmonious co-existence among the people.

President Buhari expressed optimism that such cordial bonds would continue to endure among various groups and serve as a strong unifying force in the country.

President Buhari decried the misunderstanding of internal conflicts by many people at home and abroad, citing the farmer-herders clashes which in several places had been misconstrued as religious, when in fact they arose from social and cultural factors.

He restated his appeal for better understanding of the nation’s diverse cultures in order to engender a healthier co-existence among the people, while fortifying and strengthening the unity of the country.

Responding to the narration of the Tor Tiv on the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the recent conflicts in the State, the President said he was aware of that, and all that obtains in the Northeast, the Northwest and the South-South.

He noted that it is in realisation of the foregoing and the urgent need to ameliorate the plight of the IDPs that he created the new Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, “so that we have a ministry that coordinates their demands, and we avoid duplication of resources.”

Buhari expressed delight with the leadership of the Tor Tiv and other traditional rulers in their various communities for their strong support for his administration.

He promised to look into the “long list” of the delegation’s demands, and thanked the royal fathers for showing appreciation for what his administration has done in the State in terms of projects and appointments.

Earlier, the Tor Tiv had described the recent triumph of the President at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal as “God-given victory and mandate to reconstruct, rebuild and unify the country and take it to the Next Level of socio-economic development.”

“We are here to pledge our support and encouragement to your administration and its laudable programmes,” His Royal Majesty added.

Operatives at the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have detained a syndicate for allegedly trafficking girls from Nigeria to Mauritania for prostitution and sexual exploitation.

The Zonal Public Relations Officer (ZPRO), CSP Umma Ayuba, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.
She said the syndicate was apprehended on March 22 at the Command in the Meiran area of the state.
“Operatives of the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad (ZIRS), led by SP Francis Kpoughul, stormed their base where two suspects were apprehended,” Ayuba said.
The ZPRO stated that the suspects confessed to the crime. “The first suspect said she was introduced to a woman based in Mauritania by another woman, who has been prosecuted for the same offence and is currently serving a jail term.
“She said the woman in Mauritania contracted her to recruit young girls below the age of 22 to be used as sex workers there. “She added that she received ₦50,000 as commission for each girl sent to Mauritania. “She confessed that, among the girls she recruited, was her 19-year-old daughter. She also admitted to receiving over ₦500,000 from the woman in Mauritania,” Ayuba said. The ZPRO stated that her accomplice, the second suspect, admitted being contracted by the first suspect to recruit girls as domestic staff in Mauritania. “She said that, upon further questioning, she discovered the girls were to be used as sex workers and decided to withdraw from the business. “She added that the only girl she sent to the first suspect was rejected due to her age and body size. That was when she realised something was wrong,” Ayuba said. According to the ZPRO, the investigation is ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon completion. (NAN)
