In a bid to reduce cases of building collapses, and pave the way for a sustainable city, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike has approved the formation of a Ministerial Committee on Post-Development Audit of Buildings in the Federal Capital City, Abuja.

Through the Committee inaugurated by Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Felix Amechi Obuah, there will be provision of accurate records of all development permits issued, thereby reducing cases of unapproved development, illegal conversion of land use, and land grabbing.

Also, it will enhance provision of data on the consumption of the city’s utilities and services such as water, electricity and connectivity to sewer lines, which will also detect illegal connections to these facilities denying government revenue.

Another projected benefit is provision of data for accurate taxation and enhanced revenue generation since all buildings and properties would be brought to the FCT internal Revenue Tax Net, which will generate billions of Naira to the FCT Administration.

Also expected is the provision of data on research on city planning, development and management, in view of the fact that Abuja is a success story in the field of city planning, development and management.

According to the AMMC Coordinator, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, set up the Committee to take a cursory look at the trend of the city’s development and chart a more robust future course for the city’s development, which is in tandem with the renewed hone agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

He added that the exercise will enhance security and employment since consultants and experts would be engaged to provide the necessary expertise and service.

He said: “Therefore, this Committee is critical to the sustainable development of our dear city, and it is our collective duty in ensuring that the Committee succeeds.

“On our part, the FCT Minister is committed to seeing that the necessary logistics needed for the successful completion of this exercise are provided.

“Together, we shall carry out this exercise and together we shall chart a new course for the planning and development of our dear city that is evidence-based and in the end bequeaths a sustainable city legacy to future generations.”

The AMMC boss further explained that the committee is made up of representatives of all the relevant FCT departments such as AEPB, Development Control, Urban and Regional Planning, Fire Services etc.

“The people that have been appointed are professional in their different fields, so we don’t have any doubt about their performance.

“At least, we expect in or before six months, the committee would have come up with a comprehensive report and recommendations to the Hon. Minister.

“It is not a committee of one month or two months, as anything that is worth doing, is worth doing very well, that is why we have given them this amount of time, so as to enable them to do a very useful job”, he stressed.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Mukhtar Galadima, who described its work as an honourable but onerous task, however pledged that members of the committee are not going to disappoint the authority.

Galadima, who doubles as Director, Department of Development Control said: “By the grace of God, and with your full support, we are going to do justice to this exercise, because we have been opportune to write our names in gold, if we do this work well.

Bayer Leverkusen and Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface was involved in a car crash on Sunday, a day after the club’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Boniface, who scored a 72nd-minute winner in Saturday’s match, on Sunday shared pictures and video of a smashed car in since-deleted posts on Instagram, as well as what appeared to be a picture of his hand covered in blood.

A club source said Boniface was doing well after incident.

German tabloid Bild reported that the Nigeria international was a passenger in the car en route to Frankfurt airport and suffered minor hand injuries before being taken to hospital.

In a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Boniface wrote: “God is the greatest”.

The Hessen state police website said the accident occurred on Sunday morning.

“A 28-year-old was driving a Mercedes in the middle of three lanes in the direction of Frankfurt when, according to his own account, he lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue.

“He  collided sideways with a truck that was driving in the right lane next to the Mercedes,” the report added.

Boniface’s management agency did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

The 23-year-old Boniface has scored seven goals in 10 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions this season.

German champions Leverkusen, who are fourth in the Bundesliga standings with 14 points from seven games, face French side Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday. (Reuters/NAN)

The Imo Police Command says it has dismantled a camp allegedly
operated by the Indigenous People of Biafra and its militant wing, called the Eastern Security Network, at Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement issued in Owerri and made available to newsmen on Sunday.

Okoye said the bold move was part of the command’s ongoing efforts to curb terrorism and ensure public safety in the state.

He said the operation, carried out on Saturday by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, also led to the detention of 29 suspects, including 25 males and four females.

He said that the operation was initiated, following the detention of a key suspect, Emmanuel Anukuru, 25, on September 15, at Mgbidi, near Owerri.

“His vital confessions enabled police operatives to locate and dismantle the camp.

“During the operation, several dangerous items were recovered, including four pump action guns, two locally made revolver, five locally made pistols, and three AK-47 magazines,” Okoye noted.

He added that a POS machine, 20 rounds of live cartridges, one white SUV and local bulletproof charms, used by the criminal syndicate were also recovered.

Okoye further stated that the sum of N200,000, allegedly extorted from kidnap victims, was recovered.

“These findings underscore the persistent threat posed by these groups in the state.

“Investigation is ongoing, efforts are in progress to apprehend the manufacturers of the locally made guns,” he emphasised.

The PPRO urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, and assured residents of the command’s commitment to public safety.

The command’s offensive was coming on the heels of a two-day sit-at-home order in the South-East via a viral video sent out by an unidentified person.

In the video, which has caused panic among the people, a man was seen warning residents of the region to remain indoors on Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22 for their own safety.

He claimed that the defunct Republic of Biafra was going to launch its flag and Armoured Personnel Carriers in the five states of the region on the two days.

He feared that security agencies would attempt to counter the move and consequently resulting in a mayhem in the zone.  (NAN)
