CSO Wants FG to implement UN Report Against Torture

A Civil Society Organisation, Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), has appealed to the Federal Government to implement the United Nations (UN) Report Against Torture.
The Executive Director, Dr Uju Agomoh, made the appeal in a consultation workshop for government agencies on the Report of the UN Committee against torture in Nigeria, in Abuja yesterday.
Agomoh said that Nigeria acceded to the Convention Against Torture on 28 June, 2001, and was under obligation to submit its initial report under Article 19 (1) of the Convention by 28 June, 2002.
She added that the absence of this initial report by the government, the Committee Against Torture considered the status of implementation of the Convention in Nigeria at its 1852th and 1855th meetings held on 16 and 17 November 2021.
She noted that the meetings were held in accordance with rule 67, paragraph 3, of the Committee’s rules of procedure, which according to her, enabled the Committee after due notification to Nigeria to go ahead to examine the measures taken to protect or give effect to the rights recognised in the Convention and come up with concluding observations.
“We will be looking at publicity and way forward for the report, the concluding observations and especially the recommendations made to Nigeria.
“The essence of this workshop again is that the report on Nigeria by the UN Committee Against Torture is out.
“We want to create more awareness on the document. But more importantly, we want to study the recommendations and why those recommendations were made; what can be done to begin to implement those recommendations.
“Our main focus now is, how do we ensure that those recommendations are implemented.
“Today’s event is with our government agencies, tomorrow, we will engage the media and CSOs. We can no longer stay and do nothing about it.
“This is about 20 years since Nigeria signed and ratified UN Convention Against Torture Preliminary treatment,” she said.
She, however, added that the CSO would work with relevant government agencies to see how to implement the recommendations as respect to other issues.
Prof. Jumai Audi, Chairman, Nigeria Law Reform Commission, asked the government to prioritise the report for the benefit of those living in the rural areas.
“We all know that there are so many issues that the government is dealing with currently.
“But government should put this issue among its priority to tackle it now because, people at the grassroots are most affected. Those in the grassroots are really disadvantaged in the society,” she said.
The workshop had representatives from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Police, the Nigeria Correctional Service, and the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). (NAN)

Gunmen Abduct Immigration Personnel In Benue, Demand N20 Million Ransom

From Attah Ede, Makurdi
Armed men suspected to be kidnappers, have abducted an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS) Benue State Command, identified as Simon Agbo at his residence in Makurdi, the state capital.
A close relation of the victim who disclosed this to our correspondent on phone on Monday in Makurdi, said the officer was busy discussing with two of his direct neighbours on Sunday night May 11, 2025 at about 7:15pm before they came to kidnapped him.
He said the incidence happened at opposite NKST church Kuan, behind modern market in Makurdi, after the kidnappers stormed the compound and took him away at gunpoint to unknown destination.
Our correspondent gathered that the kidnappers who were well armed first fired gunshots sporadically in the air to scare family members and neighbours of the victim before abducting him from his residence.
It was further gathered that the victim was serving in Kwara State before he was redeployed to Benue State command on February this year.
Upon hearing his abduction, youths in the whole community in collaboration with local vigilantes immediately launched a search throughout the night but the gunmen could not be caught.
Younger brother of the victim, who simply identified himself as Mr. Agbo told our correspondent that one of the victim’s neighbours have been apprehended in connection with kidnapping of the immigration officer, hence his role before the incidence took place.
According to him, the neighbour whom he refused to mentioned his name, was consistently calling on the victim to come home or he should direct him to his location as at that time, that they needed to see that fateful Sunday night by all means.
“After persistent calls, that my brother should come home or if possible, describe his whereabout, then, my brother came home and went straight to that his neighbour’s compound.
“While they were at the compound discussing, another of their neighbours came to joined them and all of a sudden, the gunmen arrived the compound and immediately went straight to the immigration officer, picked only him at gunpoint, leaving the remaining two people behind.
“The neighbour’s action looks very suspicious and that is why we called for his arrest. He has been arrested and currently in police custody until our brother is released.
“As I speak with you, the kidnappers have opened discussion with the family. They are demanding for N20 million ransom for his release as at today”, he said.
The Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Immigration Service NIS could not be reached for comment as at the time of filing this report.
Efforts to get confirmation from police was unsuccessful as the Benue State Command Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Sewuese Anene, is yet to receive calls or respond to text messages sent to her cell phone
