From Francis Sadhere, Delta

The Delta State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to democratic principles and openness to constructive criticism, describing honest public engagement as vital for growth, transparency, and accountability.Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu stated this while addressing journalists in Asaba on Monday.

He emphasized that the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration remains receptive to feedback that can enhance governance, and is determined to deliver equitable development across the state.
Responding to recent protests by some youths in Udu Local Government Area, Aniagwu said certain individuals were behind attempts to incite public discontent through misinformation, especially ahead of the 2027 elections.
Flanked by key officials including the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon; the Director-General of the State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Latimore; and Executive Assistant on Public Enlightenment, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, the commissioner said that those sponsoring the protests were politically motivated actors who could not confront the government directly.Aniagwu maintained that the government has not discriminated in project execution, noting that Udu LGA — despite not massively supporting the current administration during the 2023 elections — has benefited from numerous infrastructure and social projects.“Despite that, the government has invested heavily in infrastructure and human capital in Udu,” he said. The commissioner disclosed that the state government has constructed and rehabilitated over 27.8km of roads and 24km of drains across Udu, connecting it to Uvwie, Ughelli South, and Warri South-West LGAs.Highlighted projects include the ongoing DSC roundabout flyover project, rehabilitation of CAC Road off Orhuwhorun Road, and the construction of Bezi Road off College Road in Aladja. The government is also rehabilitating the Ekakpamre–Ekrokpe–Usiefrun–Orhuwhorun Road, which spans Udu and Ughelli South LGAs, as well as reconstructing Opete Road from DSC Expressway by Plantation City to Opete Waterside.Other notable projects include the construction of Awharode Street/Awharode Lane in Oghior Town, Dickey Street linking Orhuwhorun Road to Ekete Waterside, and Chief Godwin Okporoko Crescent, whose Phase 2 is also underway in Opete. The state government is equally undertaking the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of the Aladja–Ogbe-Ijoh Road (Phase I & II), which cuts across Udu, Uvwie, and Warri South-West. Phase II of the project has been approved by the State Executive Council and is currently in the procurement stage, with contractors expected to bid soon.Aniagwu further noted the ongoing construction of the N4.8 billion Udu Harbour Market. The market will feature 230 shops, a modern abattoir, night-time lighting, and enhanced security, among other amenities. In the healthcare sector, the government is rehabilitating four primary healthcare centres in the LGA and has supplied a 4D ultrasound machine to the General Hospital in Otor-Udu to improve diagnostic services. On education, Aniagwu said major interventions are ongoing. These include the construction of a JAMB ICT centre at Ogbe-Udu Secondary School, designed to provide students with access to modern training and examination facilities.Several schools are being renovated or expanded. These include the refurbishment of six-classroom blocks at Okolor Waterside Primary School, Owhrode Secondary School, and Ogbe-Udu Secondary School, all complete with offices and toilet facilities. At Ekete Secondary School, a prototype six-classroom block is being reconstructed. At Aladja Grammar School in Aladja, both a three-classroom and a six-classroom block are under construction, including toilets, offices, and supply of furniture for students and teachers. In Otor-Udu Secondary School, a three-classroom block with an examination hall and toilets has also been renovated. The state government has also installed a 500KVA transformer along the Orhuwhorun–Usiefrun Road and replaced solar-powered streetlights in Ukpiovwin and Ogbe-Udu to enhance electricity and security in those communities.Aniagwu stressed that all projects mentioned are verifiable and stand as proof of the administration’s fairness and inclusive governance. He urged residents, especially youths, not to fall for politically driven falsehoods, assuring that the administration’s development efforts will continue with equity and transparency across Delta State.
