FAO, Stakeholders Develop Framework to Mitigate Flooding

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations says it has developed
a flood-trigger framework to mitigate the impact of the disasters in Nigeria.
The UN organisation said it achieved the feat in collaboration with key stakeholders.
Mr Gift Umor, the Climate Smart Agriculture Specialist of the FAO in Nigeria, disclosed this during the National Flood Trigger
Framework Development Workshop organised by FAO on Wednesday in Yola.
The event was held in collaboration with the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet),
National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).
Others included the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and State Emergency Development Agencies from Borno,
Adamawa and Yobe, funded by the German Government.
According to Umor, the workshop aims to enhance the capacity of stakeholders in flood damage assessment and to establish a
unified framework for preparedness and anticipatory action.
The specialist said “a lot of stakeholders and government agencies implement various activities to mitigate the impact of flooding in the country.
“However, we identified a significant gap, which was lack of a unified framework to support anticipatory action across partners.
“Currently, partners work individually, but this framework will enable joint efforts to combat the disaster that devastated communities in recent years.”
He emphasised that the workshop reflected FAO’s commitment to supporting flood-prone communities and advancing disaster preparedness across the country.
Mr John Gbadegesin, the Deputy Director, NIHSA, urged citizens residing in flood-prone areas to consider relocation to minimise the impact and save lives.
He said “NIHSA provides early warning information, promptly disseminated to state governments, local communities, critical stakeholders and humanitarian organisations.
“However, in many flood-prone areas, residents often hold on to traditional beliefs, cultural ties and emotional attachments to their communities.
“We hope this workshop fosters renewed collaboration among federal and state actors, leading to reduced flood impact and a shift in public attitude
toward flood preparedness.”
Mr Ademuyiwa Oyewumi, an Assistant Director, NASRDA, highlighted the essential role of earth observation satellites in disaster preparedness,
response, recovery and management.
Oyewumi explained that satellite data is invaluable, providing insights into forecasts, flood extents and damage assessments through satellite imagery to
assist in resource allocation and planning.
He said that through the adoption of collaborative framework, key stakeholders would be able to create an approach to reduce flood risks, protect lives
and build resilient communities.(NAN)

2027: We’ll Take Over Senatorial, Rep Seats in C’River North – APC

The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Cross River has vowed to take over the Senatorial and House of Representative seats the state’s North Senatorial District from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 general elections. APC Chairman in the state, Mr Alphonsus Eba, stated this while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Calabar.
The senatorial district is presently being represented in the Senate by Sen. Jarigbe Jarigbe of PDP. Also, Rep. Akpanke of PDP is currently representing Bekwarra/Obudu/Obanliku Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, while Rep. Godwin Odey of APC is representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency. Eba urged APC members occupying different positions to put in their best, while supporting Gov. Bassey Out’s re-election bid. He also disassociated the party from a petition purportedly written by a legal practitioner under the aegis of Concerned Stakeholders of APC in the Northern Senatorial District against Jarigbe. “The petition written by the APC concerned group against the sitting senator on the issue of N12.5 billion constituency fund is not from us and we disassociate ourselves from it. “I want to sound a note of warning to every member of this party that on no account should anybody in the name of our party engage any lawyer for any purpose that seems to give an impression that the party is behind it,” he said. Eba said that all members of the party had the constitutional right to form support groups for the betterment of the party. He, however, stated such groups be recognised by and registered with APC. According to him, such groups the Northern Coalition, Centricle and the Southern Summit are all authorised to work, adding, however, that they must be guided by the party’s code of conduct. The APC chairman further stated that they must put in place the structure and leadership that would not make them look amorphous. (NAN)NEWS
Tribunal Dismisses Accord Party’s Petition Against Gov. Okpebholo, APC

The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday dismissed the petition filed by Accord Party against the declaration of Gov. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the Sept. 21, 2024 governorship election.Delivering judgment, the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led three-member tribunal held that Accord Party and its governorship candidate, Mr Bright Enabulele made weighty allegations but failed to defend them.
The tribunal said that the petitioners failed to name a single perpetrator to substantiate their allegations of thuggery, stuffing of ballots, harassing and molesting voters. According to the tribunal, the two petitioners were so inconsistent in their claims with allegations of non compliance with the Electoral Act 2002 and calling for nullification of the election on one hand while seeking to be declared winners on the other hand.“On the other hand, they are seeking to be declared winners of the election they claimed to have been conducted without compliance with the Electoral Act.”The tribunal held that there was no meaningful evidence for it to act upon to nullify the election of Okpebholo and APC and subsequently dismissed the petition in its entirety. The tribunal thereafter affirmed the election of Okpebholo as being valid and conducted in compliance with the law.The tribunal had earlier dismissed the petition filed by Action Alliance (AA)also challenging the declaration of Okpebholo and the APC as winners of the Edo governorship election. The petition of AA was dismissed for being frivolous and lacking in merit. The tribunal is currently delivering judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate Mr Asue Ighodalo also challenging the declaration of the APC and Okpebholo in the Edo governorship election of Sept. 21, 2024.(NAN)
