The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has sought collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to enhance tax compliance in the FCT.

This was contained in a statement by FCT-IRS, Head, Corporate Communications, FCT-IRS, Mustapha Sumaila in Abuja.

The Acting Executive Chairman of the Service, Michael Ango during a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Olanipekun Olukoyede at the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters on Wednesday said the partnership was important because of the statutory roles of both agencies.

Ango stated that the engagement with the EFCC was in line with the mandate of the FCT-IRS to collaborate with agencies such as the EFCC towards improving tax compliance in the FCT.

He noted that one of the major initiatives of the FCT-IRS in 2025 is the harmonisation of revenue collection and administration in the FCT and to achieve this, the support and collaboration of all persons and agencies such as the EFCC would be required.

This is to ensure that all revenue due to the FCT is collected and accounted for in a transparent manner and to enhance ease of doing business and improve revenue generation. This will further consolidate the massive infrastructural development in the FCT, by Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

In this regard, Ango noted that most suspects being investigated by EFCC for financial crimes were not tax compliant and it would be helpful if such persons were interrogated as to their tax status and required to fulfill their tax obligations as part of the investigation process.

The FCT-IRS boss stated that this approach could also be extended to forfeitures of assets or monies of suspects to the EFCC by the Courts.

Ango condoled with the EFCC on the recent loss of its operative and commended the EFCC Executive Chairman for the excellent work he and the Commission have been doing to tackle financial crimes in the country since he assumed duty as Chief Executive of the Commission.

In his remarks, the EFCC Executive Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede thanked the FCT-IRS chairman and his team for the visit and expressed willingness to partner with the Service to improve revenue collection in the FCT. Olukoyede said the Commission is in partnership with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and other State Internal Revenue Services and therefore would be willing to partner with the FCT-IRS to shore up its collections.

He noted the need to have a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to highlight the specific areas of collaboration pointing out that such would further strengthen the relationship between the two organisations.

The EFCC Chairman further lauded the efforts of Michael Ango since his appointment as Acting Executive Chairman, adding that he has been keeping tabs with the achievements within the short period of time and also not surprised about the aggressive infrastructural development in the FCT carried out by the Honourable Minister of the FCT, which shows that taxpayer’s money is judiciously used across the territory.

Jonathan Perform’s Groundbreaking of 25,000 Capacity Stadium in Yenagoa

From Mike Tayese, Yenagoa

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has performed the groundbreaking ceremony of a 25,000 capacity stadium at Igbogene in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital as part of activities marking Governor Douye Diri’s five years in office.

Jonathan emphasized the need for sports administrators, both national and state, to establish funds to cater for sports people who have brought pride to the country.

“Developing sport is not about encouraging people to go and win medals, but I always feel sad when I see people who have promoted the name Nigeria and gone for international games, either the Commonwealth or Olympics, and win medals and immediately, there are all kinds of ceremonies but after that, they are forgotten,” Jonathan said.

He noted that many Nigerian athletes who have won international medals are often left to beg after their retirement. “After some years, some of them become almost beggars, even to feed, and that doesn’t encourage young people to put all their lives into sports,” Jonathan added.

Jonathan advocated for a fund to be managed by reputable individuals to support athletes throughout their lives, even after they retire from active sports. “So, I feel that as a country, we must have a fund to be properly managed by people, so that anybody who has made a name in a sport, that person will not be a beggar till the person dies,” he said.

Although he was unable to launch such a fund during his presidency era, he urged the chairman of the National Sports Commission to consider the idea, which could also be implemented at the state level.

“We must make sure that anybody who made the country proud should be taken care of until that person dies, and that will encourage young men and women to invest 100 per cent of their skills and lives into sports,” Jonathan emphasized.

Jonathan commended Governor Diri’s vision and leadership, expressing hope that the stadium project would be completed within the 24-month target.

“I am very hopeful that by February 2027, I will escort President Tinubu down to commission the sports complex. Let me again congratulate you, your vision, and your leadership, my governor, and people who are here to assist you with this project,”

In his remark, the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau hailed Governor Douye Diri for the huge investment in the area of sports development in Bayelsa State.

According to him, he was happy to be part of this great occasion. “I want to thank you for this great commitment from you. Also, I want to assure you the Nigerian Football Federation will collaborate with you to ensure that everything that is needed to be done in this facility to meet the required standard, we will work with you to ensure that we achieve”.

By David Torough, Abuja

Angry youths in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State have set a police station ablaze following the alleged death of a young man in police custody.

According to a source in the town, the victim was allegedly tortured to death after being arrested, prompting his colleagues to invade the police station and burn it down.

The irate youths reportedly chased away the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and other policemen before setting the building on fire.

They also protested across the town to express their displeasure over the incident.

However, the Ondo State Police Command has denied that the young man died in their custody, insisting that he died while receiving treatment at a hospital.

During an on-the-spot assessment of the damage, Ondo State Police Commissioner, Wilfred Afolabi, condemned the attack and arson. He ordered a full-scale investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and to bring those responsible to justice.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, the incident began on February 15, when a dispute between two families on Ogbomo Street, Ifon, escalated into a public fight.

“Officers from Ifon Division, led by an Inspector, responded promptly, intervened, and made arrests while some suspects fled,” Odunlami explained.

She further revealed that Tobi Bobade, one of the young men involved in the fight, was brought to the station by a man identified as Losilosi.

“He appeared weak and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment,” she said.

His remains have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, for a post-mortem examination.

While officers were still at the station, an angry mob, allegedly led by the deceased’s father, attacked the station and set it on fire.

“The administrative office, the DPO’s office, the station store, and two exhibit vehicles were destroyed in the inferno caused by the mob,” Odunlami stated.

The Police Commissioner, during his visit, met with the Local Government Chairman, community leaders and other stakeholders.

He expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family on behalf of the Inspector General of Police while condemning the violent actions of the mob.

“Such acts of lawlessness will not be tolerated,” Afolabi warned. “All those responsible for this criminal act will face the full weight of the law.”

He urged the public to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their hands, assuring that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
