FG Inaugurates Enhanced e-passport, Passport Production Centre in South-East

The Federal Government, on Thursday, inaugurated enhanced electronic international passport (e-passport) and passport production centre in the South East.
Inaugurating the enhanced e-passport in Enugu, the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, said that the enhanced e-passport has over 25 security features that distinguish it among other international passports in the world.
Aregbesola said that the state-of-the-art and technological-driven security features make the e-passport virtually impossible to counterfeit or manipulate.
He noted that the enhanced e-passport, including its elaborate security features, is a major design of the Federal Government to check international passport racketeering and other forms of manipulations.
According to him, we urge Nigerians to fill their forms online, pay for it online and get their biometric capturing dates as well online; by using their simple android phones within the comfort of their homes or offices.
“Those days of asking people to help you do it or an immigration officer to assist passport applicants are over and this will help check racketeering, fraud and other manipulation in the system.
“With the enhanced e-passport, the Federal Government through the Ministry of Interior will eliminate corruption and racketeering in the system,” he said.
The minister said for now, the electronic passport (e-passport) and the enhanced e-passport would be in existence side-by-side.
He said that there were over 50,000 processed and uncollected international passports throughout the country, adding that the ministry would help to meet the backlog of 14,021 passports in demand as at today.
“Between 2019 and now, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued three million passports and just last year alone, we issued 1.3 million passports. So, there is more need for our passport.
“The people of South-East travel a lot and the enhanced e-passport, with some of its categories is longer validity and pagination. It would surely help the people of the zone meet their international travel needs,” he said.
On the passport production centre, the minister lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his kind disposition to the ministry and the NIS for providing the most sophisticated international passport production facility in in Enugu.
Aregbesola noted that the passport production facility would facilitate the ease and speed of getting passports in the zone, adding that it would not be more than six weeks for fresh applicants and three weeks for those applicants for renewal.
The minister, however, urged Mr Joachim Olumba, Controller of NIS, Enugu State Command, to liaison with the state government to plant massive trees within the NIS complex in Enugu to safeguard the environment against harsh weather.
Earlier, Mr Isah Idris, the acting Comptroller General of NIS, said that the introduction of enhanced e-passport is meant to transform the entire passport issuance and processing system as well as improve service delivery.
Idris said that the enhanced e-passport is water-resistant, durable, user-friendly and highly technologically compliant.
He noted that the enhanced e-passport comes in three categories: 32 pages with five years validity; 64 pages with five years validity and 64 pages with 10 years validity (only for adults above 18 years).
“Applicant’s National Identity Number (NIN) is a compulsory requirement for obtaining the enhanced e-passport,” he added.
In an address, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari, the minister and NIS authorities for inaugurating the enhanced e-passport and passport production facility in Enugu.
Ugwuanyi, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, said: “We sincerely believe that the enhanced e-passport will definitely eliminate corruption, bribery, manipulation and racketeering in the entire passport system.
“As a government, we are happy that the Federal Government, through the ministry and NIS, has kept faith and assurance of providing Nigerians and indeed the entire citizenry an enhanced e-passport we can be proud of.
“The state will continue to partner the NIS and the Federal Ministry of Interior to ensure that immigration services get to all,” he said.
The governor also assured the minister that it would cooperate with the command to ensure that trees are planted all over the NIS Command complex in Enugu. (NAN)

Tinubu Directs Security Overhaul to End Violence

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday directed an immediate overhaul of national security strategies, demanding urgent action to end the escalating violence in Borno, Benue, Plateau and Kwara.
The President who met with security chiefs at the State House, Abuja, for more than two hours, said the killing of innocent people in Borno, Benue and Plateau must cease.
“Enough is enough,” President Tinubu declared as he once again condemned the senseless targeting of innocent Nigerians, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President’s spokesman, said in a statement.
Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA), told State House correspondents that the service chiefs briefed the President on all the attacks in the states, the death toll, and the destruction of property.
The NSA said President Tinubu ordered a new approach to tackling the security challenges.
Ribadu noted that the President also actively monitored and gave instructions during his work visit to Paris and London.
“Mr President gave us the chance to come and brief him again. It lasted very long. We gave him an update on what was going on.
“Even when he was out there, he was constantly in touch, giving directives and following developments.
“Today, we had the opportunity to come and brief him again, and it lasted hours. It was a very detailed briefing, and it was exhaustive,” said Ribadu.
He said the security chiefs listened to Tinubu and took instructions from him.
“The fact is that Mr President is insisting that we work harder to restore security in the country.
“We gave him information on what has been happening and assured him of our commitment. We had carried out his instructions.
“We went to places with incidences of insecurity, such as Plateau, Benue, and Borno States.
“We went to those particular three states. We gave him feedback because he had directed us earlier to go and meet with the political authorities there,” he stated.
The NSA said the President highlighted the need to involve the local councils and state governments more in tackling cases of insecurity.
“The President directed that we work more with governors. He was very worried and concerned at the meeting. He said, ‘Enough is enough!” said Ribadu.
He said the attackers usually targeted innocent citizens by planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and targeting ungoverned areas. (NAN)

Oborevwori’s Defection, Major Boost — Uzodinma

Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo has called Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) a major development.
Uzodinma, Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), stated this while speaking with journalists in Abuja following a closed-door meeting with other Progressive Governors.
Report says that Oborevwori officially joined the APC on Wednesday.
“When a governor joins our party, we view it as a significant event and a moment to commend ourselves and thank Almighty God.
“That’s exactly our sentiment. The Progressives Governors resolved today to celebrate this development and extend congratulations to one another,” Uzodinma said.
He noted that governors not originally elected on the APC platform now recognise President Bola Tinubu’s efforts and are aligning with the party for a united Nigeria.
“The APC treats sub-national governance with great importance.
“So, a governor defecting to our party is a heavy development in our political journey,” he said.
Uzodinma said the governors discussed the welfare of the APC and current national issues during their meeting.
They pledged continued support for President Tinubu’s policies and vowed to strengthen the ruling party.
He stated that the Progressive Governors would promote Tinubu’s achievements so that Nigerians can fully appreciate the administration’s progress.
“We’ll counter blackmail and propaganda aimed at tarnishing the government’s image.
“We, as Progressive Governors, firmly support President Tinubu and the APC government in Nigeria.
“We are pleased with the progress. In spite of challenges, the reform policies are beginning to yield visible results.
“We pray God grants the President wisdom, courage and strength to deliver greater dividends of democracy for Nigerians,” Uzodinma said.
