FG Promises Improved Security in 2021

The Federal Government has given an assurance that the country will witness improved security this year.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave the assurance at a new year media briefing on Monday in Lagos.
The minister disclosed that a number of the platforms the country had been expecting to pep up the battle against terrorists and bandits would arrive in the new year.
He said President Muhammadu Buhari had continued to provide the armed forces and other security agencies with whatever was required to function better in terms of platforms, logistics and capacity development.
“As the president said in his new year broadcast, the security apparatus and personnel of the armed forces and the police are to be re-energised and re-organised.
“This is with a view to enhancing their capacity to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups waging war against our communities in some parts of the country,’’ he said,
Mohammed paid tributes to all security personnel for their sacrifice, dedication to duty and patriotism, noting that the nation remained in their debt for their service.
The minister said that 2020 was one of the most challenging years for the country with COVID-19 and EndSARS protest impacting on the economy in addition to security challenges.
He said the government, however, rose with courage and determination to tackle the challenges and had continued to do so.
“The year 2020 has been a challenging year, undoubtedly one of the most challenging years for the country.
“A global pandemic that triggered an economic recession, security challenge and an unnecessary violence that stemmed from what started as a peaceful protest are just some of the challenges.
“It is to the credit of the President Mohammadu Buhari Administration that it tackled these challenges headlong.
“Thanks to the several complementary fiscal, real sector and monetary interventions proactively introduced by the
government to forestall a far worse decline of the economy and alleviate the negative consequences of the pandemic,’’ he said.
The minister said the government equally introduced the Economic Sustainability Plan and took significant steps to reach out to the vulnerable.
Specifically, he said the National Social Register was expanded to 3.6 million beneficiaries across the 36 states while support was provided to 8.8 million households through the 70,000 metric tons food grains released from the Strategic Reserve.
Mohammed also said no fewer than 1.3 million vulnerable households benefited from the Conditional Cash Transfers across 34 states.
He said various other interventions were made through the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme as well as the Trader and Market Moni loans.
The minister berated opposition figures for their constant criticism of the programmes and activities of government as well as whatever the president said or did without justifiable reasons. (NAN)

Kalu Blames Insecurity on Political Sabotage, Urges Tinubu to Sack Ineffective Service Chiefs

By Eze Okechukwu, AbujaThe former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu has blamed the worsening insecurity, especially across Nigeria’s farming communities, on political sabotage, alleging that some elite interests are sponsoring unrest to destabilize Tinubu’s administration and seize political power.
Kalu, who said he had advised the President privately on specific Security Chiefs who in his opinion should be relieved of their duties, including underperforming Ministers, however warned that sentimental leadership decisions could worsen Nigeria’s socio-economic instability. Speaking in a wide-ranging interview on a TV programme on Monday, Kalu, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), pointed out that President Tinubu must demonstrate political will and courage in reshuffling his cabinet and security leadership to address insecurity and economic discontent.”Both Security Chiefs and Ministers, some of them should go. President Tinubu must be courageous enough to sack some of these Ministers.“The insecurity in Nigeria is politically induced by politicians and businessmen. Some of them are not even looking for money; they just want to grab power. If he will take my advice, most of these Ministers I have apprised of, and I’ve talked to him privately, should go. If he will take my advice, some of these Security Chiefs should go. There must be no sentiment when it comes to redeeming Nigeria, Kalu declared during an interview with Seun Okinbaloye.Kalu also criticized the widespread use of U.S. dollars in real estate and street transactions, calling it a symptom of Nigeria’s weak currency controls and a threat to economic sovereignty.According to him, the government must outlaw street-level use of foreign currencies and emulate countries like South Africa, India, and the UK which tightly regulate currency exchange.“The use of dollar bills on the street should stop. Landlords and estate agents using dollars as exchange should not happen in Nigeria. If we want to survive, we must take control of our currency, he emphasized. While acknowledging that Nigerians are suffering and many reforms are yet to yield tangible benefits, Kalu argued that President Tinubu’s economic policies are on the right path, citing improvements in macroeconomic indicators such as exchange rate stability and industrial capacity utilization, even as he admitted the effects were yet to reach the average Nigerians.“The macro side is coming up, but Nigerians in the lower area are still suffering. These changes are still trickling down; it’s going to take another one to two years”, he said.He urged Nigerians to give the administration more time, citing historical reform examples such as Singapore under Lee Kuan Yew, while emphasizing the need for unity, economic patriotism, and depoliticization of national development. The interview comes amid mounting public frustration over economic hardship, rising insecurity, and widespread political tensions as the country nears the midpoint of President Tinubu’s first term.NEWS
