Foundation Unveils Book on Gas Flaring in Ughelli North LGA

From Francis Sadhere, Delta

The Ejiro & Otive Igbuzor Foundation has unveiled a new book, Flames of Injustice: Health and Environmental Costs of Gas Flaring in Ughelli North LGA, a research-driven work that exposes the devastating effects of gas flaring on local communities. The public presentation was held on Tuesday at Government College, Ughelli, Delta State, with stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, the oil industry, media, and local communities in attendance.

Welcoming participants to the event, the Foundation’s Executive Director, Monday Osasah, described the book as “a groundbreaking research product that highlights the devastating impact of gas flaring in Ughelli North.
”He said the publication, supported by the Global Green Grants Fund, demonstrates the Foundation’s commitment to advancing environmental justice, community development, and human rights.Osasah noted that gas flaring has far-reaching consequences, ranging from acid rain that destroys crops and infrastructure to severe health problems caused by air pollution. According to him, the research not only documents the scale of the problem but also provides policy recommendations and practical strategies to mitigate its impacts. The 3-chapter book examines the scope of gas flaring in Ughelli North, explores solutions to the environmental and health challenges, and highlights the urgent need for government and industry action.“This launch is not just about presenting a book, but about igniting conversations and commitments to end gas flaring and promote environmental justice in Ughelli North and across the Niger Delta,” Osasah said.He stressed that the struggle against environmental and social injustices must continue despite resistance from political leaders who, he said, often ignore the realities of violent crimes and environmental degradation.Calling for vigilance and unity, the Executive Director urged stakeholders to leverage the insights in the book to push for policies that will protect the environment, biodiversity, and livelihoods of communities affected by oil exploration.“The launch today is a call to action,” he declared. “We must give the issues raised in this book the best of our attention as we work together to create a just and sustainable future.”Professor Sunny Awhefeada, while reviewing the book, called for increased awareness, accountability, and political will in tackling the dangers of gas flaring in Delta State and across Nigeria.Prof. Awhefeada, said the book deals extensively with dishonesty of some male community elders during engagements, noting that women and youths were more open and forthcoming in expressing the devastating realities of gas flaring. He stressed that some local leaders benefit from the system and therefore remain reluctant to speak the truth about its impact.Highlighting the massive knowledge gap on environmental issues in host communities, the professor said the book also proffer solutions to this problem. He recalled how, as a child, residents were once excited by the night skies lit up by flares, unaware that their health and environment were being endangered. He emphasized the need to “catch them young” through environmental clubs in schools and even proposed integrating environmental studies into school curricula as a compulsory subject. He also faulted the absence of political representatives, including lawmakers, at the launch. According to him, meaningful change requires engaging politicians with facts, research, and sustained advocacy. “There is an element of political will which will come from persuasion, which will come from the knowledge with which you are armed,” he said.Awhefeada warned against expecting quick fixes, describing the struggle against gas flaring as a movement whose time has come.“We are all complicit, one way or another,” he said, stressing that leaders are recruited from followers, and both groups must take responsibility for perpetuating or tolerating environmental injustices. The professor concluded by insisting that the fight must go beyond rhetoric to practical action, continuous enlightenment, and sustained pressure on policymakers to protect the environment and livelihoods of Niger Delta communities. An academia, Ayo Okotie, Pastor Wilson Egbodge, Dennis Warri (Esq), who represented the President General of Orogun Kingdom, Chief Bam Opone, amongst others, raised fresh concerns about the dangers of gas flaring and pipeline installations in Nigeria, warning that negligence by oil companies and government agencies could result in disasters of catastrophic proportions.According to them, “host communities remain neglected, while the youth are distracted by temporary gains such as surveillance jobs, instead of addressing long-term safety and environmental risks.”Particular concern was raised about buried gas pipelines, which were described as more dangerous than visible gas flares. Communities living on top of such infrastructure, the speaker warned, are “unknowingly sitting on their deathbeds.”The book launch also featured contributions from government officials, academics, journalists, civil society actors, and community leaders, all of whom pledged support for stronger advocacy against gas flaring in the Niger Delta.

Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo on Tuesday inaugurated privately built Southward Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Edumo, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, describing it as a vital lifeline for communities and a catalyst for development.

The governor, while speaking at the occasion, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure across the state.

He commended the vision and dedication of the hospital’s promoters and management.

He noted that their investment goes beyond business, describing it as “an act of service to humanity.”

“What you have built here will provide jobs for our youths, serve as a lifeline for citizens, and contribute significantly to the development of our state,” he said.

Ododo emphasized the importance of early diagnosis in saving lives, noting that the facility’s modern diagnostic equipment would enhance the detection and treatment of illnesses.

According to him, timely diagnosis makes treatment more effective, less complicated, and more affordable.

He stressed that the growing population in Kogi and neighbouring states requires reliable healthcare services, adding that the new facility is well-positioned to meet such demands.

The governor further underscored the role of private sector participation in healthcare delivery, noting that the government alone cannot meet the needs of the people. He assured the hospital’s management of continued support through policies that create a conducive environment for healthcare institutions to thrive.

“Our administration remains firmly committed to strengthening the healthcare system—from upgrading general hospitals and primary healthcare centres to expanding access to health insurance,” he said, urging residents of Kabba-Bunu to take ownership of the facility by patronising and protecting it.

Ododo also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure nationwide under the Renewed Hope Agenda, pledging alignment with federal initiatives to build a stronger health system.

The Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Bosede Jumoku Omadara, said the facility was established to address gaps in early diagnosis and reduce the need for medical tourism outside the state. She added that the hospital would also serve neighbouring Kwara and Ekiti state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulaziz Adams Adeiza, confirmed that the facility is fully registered and compliant with regulatory standards, noting that it would serve not only Okun land but also surrounding regions.

One of the hospital’s directors, Prof. Victor Kolawole, described the centre as a specialist hospital equipped to handle advanced procedures, including brain surgery and joint replacement, while another director, Dr. Shareefat Seun Yusuf, assured that the hospital would offer accessible, affordable, and compassionate care of international standards.

The Chairman of Kabba/Bunu Local Government, Michael Zachius, described the project as a landmark achievement and the first of its kind in the area, while Hon.

Rahim Madaki, representing the constituency in the House of Representatives, said the hospital symbolizes vision and will create employment opportunities.

In his remarks, the Obaro of Kabba, Oba Dr. Solomon Adeniyi, called on the government to tackle the menace of quack medical practitioners, while retired Commodore Jerry Omadara commended the governor’s strides in both healthcare and security.

The commissioning marks a major milestone in Kogi State’s efforts to expand access to quality healthcare and improve the well-being of its citizens.

FG Seeks Partnership to Relocate Urban Custodial Centres

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has urged all levels of government to collaborate in relocating custodial centres overtaken by urbanisation.

Tunji-Ojo made the call during a stakeholders’ engagement on the report by the Independent Panel on Alleged Corruption and Violations against the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said partnerships with state governments were essential to relocate old custodial centres situated too close to residents.

“Urbanisation has overtaken several correctional centres.

“Many of these facilities need to be relocated. For example, the Enugu centre is near GRA, the Akwa Ibom centre is opposite the government house.

“The Ibadan centre is in a market area, while Ikoyi Polo Club shares a fence with one of the centres,” he said.

According to the minister, prompt and decisive action is needed, as the federal government cannot act alone without support from states, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.

He cited the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, built in 1914, and the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, built in 1955, as examples.

Tunji-Ojo further disclosed that 90 per cent of inmates were state offenders, not federal.

He added that the federal government would continue efforts to ensure custodial centres served rehabilitation, reformation, reintegration, and correction purposes.

He also said that non-custodial measures were being implemented to decongest custodial centres across Nigeria.
