The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS8.3 Kogi State Sector Command, on Wednesday launched the 2021 Ember Months Campaign Rally, tagged: “Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience”.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi, who inaugurated the campaign at Lokoja Mega Terminal Felele, urged motorists to always maintain safe speed and obey traffic rules and regulations.

Represented by his Deputy, Dr Edward Onoja, the governor commended the efforts of FRSC for ensuring safety on Nigerian roads particularly in Kogi.

According to him, the mandate of the FRSC is to ensure there are no accidents on our way during this particular period when most people would want to embark on journey towards the end of the year.

He applauded FRSC for taking a proactive step through the advocacy which had gone a long way in reducing road accidents in the state.

The governor enjoined motorists and other road users to maintain safe speed, avoid night travels and enjoy quality road experience by not overtaking unnecessarily.

He used the opportunity to appeal to the general public particularly the transport unions to corporate and support government to ensure that the Lokoja Mega Terminal in Felele function effectively for the benefit of all.

Earlier, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi, CC Solomon Agure, said that the 2021 ember campaign was targeted at introducing the best global road use practices into the people of the state and the nation at large.

He explained that the essence of the FRSC ember months was to always educate motorists on how to safely use the road and prevent unnecessary crashes.

According to Agure, the four months of extensive public education this year is expected to produce zero crashes or zero death within the period and beyond. We are going to carry out enforcement on all traffic rules and regulations within this period.

The sector commander stressed that the Kogi FRSC, had put some measures in place to checkmate the ugly trend of overspeeding, dangerous driving and other road vices which often resulted in road traffic crashes.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility and to enjoy quality road experience, we must shun all forms of anti-safety vices relating to lawless, reckless, negligent, impatient, drunk and unskilled driving, among others”, he said.

He, therefore urged all transport stakeholders and Government officials to shun reckless driving and also ensure that their drivers and vehicles were in good mood and working conditions.

He thanked the traditional rulers, and sister security agencies in the state for their complementary roles towards achieving one common goal of nation building through safety on Nigeria’s roads.

Agure appreciated Kogi State Government for being very supportive and creating conducive environment towards the propagation of road safety in the state and the nation at large.

“Your Excellency, the Corps will continue to rely on your financial and logistics support in prosecuting our strategic goals of creating safer monitoring environment to achieve 15 and 20 per cent reduction in RTC and facility respectively’”, Agure said.

On his part, the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Yahaya Ibrahim, appreciated the FRSC for their support and proactiveness in ensuring road safety.

“We are ever ready to support the Corps and State Government to ensure that the Lokoja Mega Terminal in Felele is very effective and functional,” he said.

By Mike Odiakose, Abuja

Ahead of local government council election in Edo State, the State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded for the immediate redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Anugbum Onuaha, for his  role in the last governorship election.

According to the PDP,  the actions of the REC during the last gubernatorial polls undermined the credibility and integrity of the electoral process, and “we cannot allow such a tainted official to oversee the forthcoming bye-elections in Edo State.

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman, Edo PDP Caretaker Committee,

stated this in Benin City while briefing journalists on the preparation of the party for the fourth coming by- election.

“We however want to express displeasure that some electoral officers whom we are aware of, from their antecedent, have been compromised”.

“His actions during the last gubernatorial polls undermined the credibility and integrity of the electoral process, and we cannot allow such a tainted official to oversee the forthcoming bye-elections in Edo State.

The party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, a matter of urgency meets this demand and boosts voters confidence and assures the credibility of the process.

They also demanded  that the Electoral Officers (EOs) during the 2024 gubenaotiral who were in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Egor, Etsako West, Etsako East, and Akoko Edo steer clear of the bye-elections. Their involvement in the alleged irregularities that marred the last governorship election makes their participation unacceptable.

According to Aziegbemi, “Having completed this pre election process, our party in Edo State is highly prepared for the polls and are confident that we will emerge victorious. The areas in the contest are traditional strongholds of the PDP and with the quality and credential of our candidates and the support of the people, including our party supporters and members, we are sure of victory at the polls”. He stated.

The mantra, “One Man, One Vote”, remains our slogan and this we will uphold during the forthcoming bye-elections. As a party, we will not tolerate any form of electoral manipulation. We insist on a fair, credible, and transparent election and urge INEC, security agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure that every citizen’s vote counts and is protected.

“To those who have chosen to defect from our great party, we wish them the best in their future endeavors. However, we remind them that the natural laws of nature also apply to politics.

“As we go into the elections, we remain focused on winning the National Assembly seats and as a formidable political party that enjoys the love and support of the people especially at the grassroots, we are confident of coming out victorious.

“We urge voters in the various constituencies to remain vigilant, participate actively by coming out enmasse to vote the PDP and its candidates who have the capacity and ability to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people, he said.
