By Laide Akinboade, Abuja

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN),  said it is imperative for religious leaders to speak against the acts of Gender-Based Violence, GBV, consistently harping on a just and equitable society.

President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh who spoke during a high-level dialogue on gender-based violence in Nigeria organised by UN women  in Abuja, regretted that acts of any form of violence against women strip them of their dignity.

He said: “As religious leaders, we must give moral leadership in speaking out against all forms of violence and injustice, including gender-based violence, and to work towards creating a more just and equitable society for all to live and flourish in without fear of discrimination or intimidation.

“According to the United Nations, the most common acts of violence against women in Nigeria include sexual harassment, physical violence, harmful traditional practices, emotional and psychological violence, socio-economic violence, and violence against non-combatant women in conflict situations.

Reports from the United Nations state that one in three women has faced physical violence, and one in ten women has experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.

“These acts of violence deny the dignity of persons, and we must all be involved to protect and maintain the dignity of women. In the fight against GVB in our society and our world, we must be sincere and give it all the time, energy, and resources that are required.

The Cleric who commended the UN women for recognising the critical role of religious leaders in stemming the tide, noted that the results from their various efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women were so far encouraging.

” I want to believe that at the end of this high-level consultation, there will be a more coordinated synergy between development partners and the religious/traditional institutions to combat this menace effectively.

“Generally, women are perceived as those who always look out for what is good, access it, and make it available to all around them. In our African communities, they are trailblazers.”
