….Hoodlums Kill Two Soldiers
Alice Onukwugha, Port Harcourt
Residents of several communities in Odual, Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State are now living in fear following the killing of two soldiers attached to the ongoing Ekaago-Ogboloma-Adada road project being executed by the state government last Tuesday.
DAILY ASSET has gathered that the army personnel were gunned down by hoodlums who attempted to kidnap an expatriate managing the road project.
It was also discovered that the hoodlums took the rifles of the slain soldiers and kidnapped the foreman, as well as other workers associated with the road project and a farmer who was returning from the farm on that fateful day.
An anonymous source from one of the communities informed this reporter that the hoodlums held their captives briefly, creating fear among residents before escaping through Esalla, a river in Akani community in Odual, which connects to the Sombrero river.
Another source, who also spoke to DAILY ASSET, informed that the Army retaliated by making arrests in Emelego and Ogboloma Communities.
This source informed that due to this development, the residents of Emelego, Ogboloma, and Okolomade communities now live in panic, uncertain about the Nigerian Army’s next actions.
“Some hoodlums came to the Ogboloma road construction site on Tuesday with the intention of kidnapping the expatriate managing the road. They laid an ambush and waited for them to resume their duties. When they saw the army personnel, they shot the two soldiers and killed them.
“They also kidnapped the foreman, four other workers, and a farmer from Ogboloma community, who was returning from the farm. The hoodlums also took the soldiers’ rifles and escaped through the Esala river after intense shooting.
“As a result, the army made some arrests in Emelego and Ogboloma communities, but we are all living in fear. We’ve been sleeping in the bush; there’s panic everywhere because we don’t know what the army’s next move will be,” the source narrated.
Text messages and WhatsApp messages were sent to Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 6 Division Nigerian Army, Lt. Col Iweha Ikedishi, who had earlier assured a response when contacted regarding the incident. However, no response was received as of the time of filing this report on Thursday evening.

FCTA Orders Demolition of over 10 Illegal Duplexes Built on Abuja Green Areas

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has given its Development Control Department 48 hours to demolish more than 10 duplexes built on a green area.
The Coordinator of the Council, Chief Felix Obuah, gave the directive on Thursday during a joint inspection tour targeting illegal developments across the city.
Obuah explained that the developer of the properties had ignored multiple stop-work orders and warnings issued by the Department of Development Control.
He said that the structures, built without authorisation or allocation, clearly violated the Abuja Master Plan in Wumba District, near Apo in Abuja.
“When we invited the developer to provide legal documents for the activities he’s carrying out, we discovered there was no paper, no approval, no allocation,” Obuah said.
“So all these properties that you are seeing here are going down. Come back here in the next 48 hours, you’d see everything down.”
He said the FCT Administration would not tolerate any illegal development, especially on areas designated for environmental preservation.
Director of Development Control, Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, confirmed that no approval was granted for the construction.
“We had marked the structures at various stages, but the developer ignored our directives,” Galadima said.
“The only language that some developers seem to understand is the bulldozer.”
He noted that the affected structures included both roofed and unroofed buildings, and that demolition would proceed as ordered.
Director of Parks and Recreation, Mr Chidemelu Echee, condemned the destruction of green spaces, saying that Abuja’s urban design integrated natural ecosystems to ensure sustainable living.
“This is a disaster waiting to happen,” Echee said.
“People are randomly destroying the natural ecosystem without authorisation, which worsens the global warming crisis.”
According to the Director of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Mr Osilama Braimah, warned that removing green spaces leads to environmental degradation, including increased urban heat and flooding.
“When concrete covers everything, it prevents water percolation, affects groundwater recharge, and worsens flooding,” Braimah explained.
“We must preserve green areas to protect both people and the environment.” (NAN)
