Labour Party Demands Release of its S’East Chairman Arrested by Police

The leadership of Labour Party has demanded the release of its National Vice Chairman, South-East, Mr Ceekay Igara, arrested by the police allegedly on the order of Abia governor, Dr Alex Otti.

The party made this demand in a statement by its Deputy National Chairman, Dr Ayo Olorunfemi, on Saturday in Abuja.

Olorunfemi said Igara was arrested in Aba while holding a meeting with some party leaders when they were surrounded by policemen and whisked away without any warrant of arrest.

“Labour Party leadership is totally in shock over this development, particularly as it is coming on the orders of the party’s only state governor.

“The party is worried that Dr Alex Otti, who it laboured for in the 2023 governorship election and defended his victory, has suddenly turned to be a tiger ready to tear apart the party.

‘Labour Party is still at a loss over what may have caused the same governor who, a few months ago, stood by the party during our convention but suddenly turned to launch the worst offensive on the leadership.

“He hosted the extended stakeholders’ meeting in Abia and thereafter formed a caretaker committee, hoping to wrestle power from our leadership,” he said.

Olorunfemi said that after the courts had affirmed the leadership of Mr Julius Abure and declared the Nnewi convention valid, the party had subsequently waved an olive branch to the governor.

“We are sincerely at a loss as to why he is still working hard to destabilise and destroy the same party that gave him shelter when he needed it most.

“It is surprising that he has resorted to introducing brute and anachronistic form of political intimidation.

“It is often said that power does not change a man, rather power only brings out the true nature of a man.

“We were fooled by his humane posture, not knowing that he was just masquerading his tyrannical true person.

“We are, therefore, demanding the immediate release of Comrade Ceekay Igara from the custody of the police,” he said .

Alternatively, Olorunfemi said that the party chieftain should be charged to court within the next 24 hours, as specified by law. (NAN)

Bayer Leverkusen and Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface was involved in a car crash on Sunday, a day after the club’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Boniface, who scored a 72nd-minute winner in Saturday’s match, on Sunday shared pictures and video of a smashed car in since-deleted posts on Instagram, as well as what appeared to be a picture of his hand covered in blood.

A club source said Boniface was doing well after incident.

German tabloid Bild reported that the Nigeria international was a passenger in the car en route to Frankfurt airport and suffered minor hand injuries before being taken to hospital.

In a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Boniface wrote: “God is the greatest”.

The Hessen state police website said the accident occurred on Sunday morning.

“A 28-year-old was driving a Mercedes in the middle of three lanes in the direction of Frankfurt when, according to his own account, he lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue.

“He  collided sideways with a truck that was driving in the right lane next to the Mercedes,” the report added.

Boniface’s management agency did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

The 23-year-old Boniface has scored seven goals in 10 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions this season.

German champions Leverkusen, who are fourth in the Bundesliga standings with 14 points from seven games, face French side Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday. (Reuters/NAN)

Police Smash IPOB/ESN Terrorists’ Camp, Detain 29 Suspects in Imo

The Imo Police Command says it has dismantled a camp allegedly
operated by the Indigenous People of Biafra and its militant wing, called the Eastern Security Network, at Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement issued in Owerri and made available to newsmen on Sunday.

Okoye said the bold move was part of the command’s ongoing efforts to curb terrorism and ensure public safety in the state.

He said the operation, carried out on Saturday by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, also led to the detention of 29 suspects, including 25 males and four females.

He said that the operation was initiated, following the detention of a key suspect, Emmanuel Anukuru, 25, on September 15, at Mgbidi, near Owerri.

“His vital confessions enabled police operatives to locate and dismantle the camp.

“During the operation, several dangerous items were recovered, including four pump action guns, two locally made revolver, five locally made pistols, and three AK-47 magazines,” Okoye noted.

He added that a POS machine, 20 rounds of live cartridges, one white SUV and local bulletproof charms, used by the criminal syndicate were also recovered.

Okoye further stated that the sum of N200,000, allegedly extorted from kidnap victims, was recovered.

“These findings underscore the persistent threat posed by these groups in the state.

“Investigation is ongoing, efforts are in progress to apprehend the manufacturers of the locally made guns,” he emphasised.

The PPRO urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, and assured residents of the command’s commitment to public safety.

The command’s offensive was coming on the heels of a two-day sit-at-home order in the South-East via a viral video sent out by an unidentified person.

In the video, which has caused panic among the people, a man was seen warning residents of the region to remain indoors on Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22 for their own safety.

He claimed that the defunct Republic of Biafra was going to launch its flag and Armoured Personnel Carriers in the five states of the region on the two days.

He feared that security agencies would attempt to counter the move and consequently resulting in a mayhem in the zone.  (NAN)
