Reps Probe Missing 178,459 Police Firearms, Ammunition

. Figure includes 88, 078 AK47 Rifles, 3,097 Others
By Ubong Ukpong, Abuja
The House of Representatives yesterday, mandated an ad-hoc committee to pry into the report of missing police firearms and ammunition and conduct due diligence of the control processes of the armoury of the Nigeria Police Force.
Okechukwu noted that there was a 2019 report from the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation on alleged disappearance of about 178,459 different arms and ammunition belonging to the Nigeria Police Force.
He further noted that the audit of Arms Movement Register, Monthly Returns of Arms and Ammunition Register at the Armoury Section revealed that a total number of lost firearms as at December 2018 stood at 178,459 pieces.
Also, “out of this number, 88,078 were AK-47 rifles, 3,907 assorted rifles and pistols across different police formations, which could not be accounted for as at January 2020.
“Aware of the findings in the report that the Police High Command failed to keep record of unserviceable and expired firearms and ammunition; owing to non-compliance to the internal control system of the Nigeria Police Force.
“Also aware that records of the total number of unserviceable firearms were not produced for examinations and there were no returns from Adamawa State Command, Police Mobile Force (PMF) 46, 56, 64 and 68 for the period under review”, the lawmaker said.
He was alarmed that dully completed Treasury Form 146 (loss of stores) were not presented, stressing that, “records obtained from Force Armament at Force Headquarters showed 21 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron, Abuja did not report a single case of missing firearm, whereas schedule of missing arms obtained from the same PMF showed a total of 46 missing arms between year 2000 and February 2019.”
Okechukwu is worried that the value of the lost firearms could not be ascertained because no document relating to their cost of acquisition was presented for examination.
He said in taking decisions on this matter, the House should be mindful of the worsening state of security, kidnapping and banditry in the country with concerns that the missing arms could have found their ways into the wrong hands.
Accordingly, the House in adopting his motion asked its ad-hoc committee already investigating the release of arrested criminals by the police to also undertake the investigation.

From Attah Ede, Makurdi
Suspected Lakurawa terrorists, working in concert with armed herders, yesterday launched a deadly raid on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, killing three people and abducting three others. The attackers, said to have crossed from neighbouring Nasarawa State, struck around 7:00AM, opening fire on villagers, who were heading to their farms.
The incident happened barely 300 yards from a security base. Enraged residents, including women and youths, blocked the Makurdi–Lafia–Abuja expressway in protest, displaying the bodies of the victims and demanding stronger security measures. The protesters later marched towards the Government House in Makurdi.A youth leader, Achii Matthias, accused Fulani herders of masterminding the attack, lamenting that it occurred despite the presence of about 200 security personnel in Yelewata and surrounding areas.Special Adviser to the Benue State Governor on Security, Joseph Har, confirmed the incident, saying the road blockade had been cleared. The Benue State Police Command also confirmed the attack, stating that at about 5:00AM on the same day, gunmen suspected to be bandit herdsmen attempted to invade Udei town but were repelled by police tactical units.“At 7:00AM, security agents in Yelewata responded to gunfire from armed men approaching the town, engaging them in a shootout and forcing them to flee with injuries. Unfortunately, some villagers at the outskirts were attacked before security forces could reach them.“Three people sustained serious injuries and were taken to Benue State University Teaching Hospital, while three others were confirmed dead.Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, commiserated with the victims’ families and assured that efforts to combat criminality in the area would continue, urging residents to support security agencies with timely information. This attack comes less than two months after over 200 people were reportedly killed in a midnight assault on Yelewata.COVER
