Minister of Defence Fumes over Recent Killings in Plateau

From Jude Dangwam, Jos

The Minister of Defence Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has condemned the renewed bloodshed across some local government areas of Plateau State and called for an immediate end to the senseless killings.

He said peace loving people in the affected areas must avoid farm destruction, cattle rustling, poisoning of animals, night grazing, under age grazing and avoid ethnic profiling.

Abubakar stated this on Sunday during a stakeholder’s engagement with community, religious and youth leaders from Barkin-Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos, Mangu and Wase local government areas of Plateau State.

He noted that the essence of the stakeholders’ engagement is to come out with workable solutions and tasked them to single out criminals in their respective communities and treat them as criminals rather than promoting ethnic profiling.

In his words, “Firstly, I must express my displeasure over the current attacks and reprisals that have resulted in the loss of lives and property. This is happening despite the best efforts of our security agencies, particularly the 3rd Division Operation Safe Haven, in ensuring a peaceful settlement to these early attacks that have affected both farmers and cattle breeders.

“I am particularly saddened by the actions of certain elements in some communities who continue to destroy farms and disrupt peace efforts despite ongoing dialogue aimed at resolving the issues diplomatically. These security challenges are not isolated to Plateau State, but are widespread across other parts of the country.

“Farmers and cattle breeders need each other to survive, and I call on both sides to desist from violence, as peace is the only path to social and economic growth in our country. The destructive activities of farm destruction, cattle rustling, and reprisals must stop immediately.” He stated

“This stakeholders’ meeting is intended to de-escalate tension and prevent the spillover of the current situation in parts of Mangu into other areas of the state. If peace is not achieved, the settlement program of the state government will not yield results, and the state’s economy will continue to suffer.

“We must rethink the issue of farm destruction and work to end these isolated attacks immediately in order to allow peaceful coexistence. The division of communities along ethno-religious lines has led to disaster, and the Federal Government will not tolerate anything capable of causing division and disrespect among Nigerians. Living together in peace is not optional but mandatory.

“It is evident that the President is committed to countering any secessionist agenda in any part of the country.” He re-echoed

He promised to do his best in safeguarding the territorial integrity of the country and safety of all citizens of Nigeria. “I will not relent until the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Ministry of Defense deploy all necessary assets to ensure that our people are safe and can sleep with both eyes closed.”

The General Officer Commanding 3 Armour Division Maxwell Khobe Cantonment Rukuba Barracks Major General Abdusalam Abubakar earlier on reiter stated that his desire is to ensure total Peace within the areas of operations.

He urged stakeholders to take advantage of the engagement towards ending the circle of killings in the state.

Bayer Leverkusen and Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface was involved in a car crash on Sunday, a day after the club’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Boniface, who scored a 72nd-minute winner in Saturday’s match, on Sunday shared pictures and video of a smashed car in since-deleted posts on Instagram, as well as what appeared to be a picture of his hand covered in blood.

A club source said Boniface was doing well after incident.

German tabloid Bild reported that the Nigeria international was a passenger in the car en route to Frankfurt airport and suffered minor hand injuries before being taken to hospital.

In a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Boniface wrote: “God is the greatest”.

The Hessen state police website said the accident occurred on Sunday morning.

“A 28-year-old was driving a Mercedes in the middle of three lanes in the direction of Frankfurt when, according to his own account, he lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue.

“He  collided sideways with a truck that was driving in the right lane next to the Mercedes,” the report added.

Boniface’s management agency did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

The 23-year-old Boniface has scored seven goals in 10 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions this season.

German champions Leverkusen, who are fourth in the Bundesliga standings with 14 points from seven games, face French side Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday. (Reuters/NAN)

The Imo Police Command says it has dismantled a camp allegedly
operated by the Indigenous People of Biafra and its militant wing, called the Eastern Security Network, at Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement issued in Owerri and made available to newsmen on Sunday.

Okoye said the bold move was part of the command’s ongoing efforts to curb terrorism and ensure public safety in the state.

He said the operation, carried out on Saturday by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, also led to the detention of 29 suspects, including 25 males and four females.

He said that the operation was initiated, following the detention of a key suspect, Emmanuel Anukuru, 25, on September 15, at Mgbidi, near Owerri.

“His vital confessions enabled police operatives to locate and dismantle the camp.

“During the operation, several dangerous items were recovered, including four pump action guns, two locally made revolver, five locally made pistols, and three AK-47 magazines,” Okoye noted.

He added that a POS machine, 20 rounds of live cartridges, one white SUV and local bulletproof charms, used by the criminal syndicate were also recovered.

Okoye further stated that the sum of N200,000, allegedly extorted from kidnap victims, was recovered.

“These findings underscore the persistent threat posed by these groups in the state.

“Investigation is ongoing, efforts are in progress to apprehend the manufacturers of the locally made guns,” he emphasised.

The PPRO urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, and assured residents of the command’s commitment to public safety.

The command’s offensive was coming on the heels of a two-day sit-at-home order in the South-East via a viral video sent out by an unidentified person.

In the video, which has caused panic among the people, a man was seen warning residents of the region to remain indoors on Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22 for their own safety.

He claimed that the defunct Republic of Biafra was going to launch its flag and Armoured Personnel Carriers in the five states of the region on the two days.

He feared that security agencies would attempt to counter the move and consequently resulting in a mayhem in the zone.  (NAN)
