By Ateed Yusuf, Abuja
The FCT chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has condemned the assault on one of its members, Nurse Ebalu Marvis by a Medical Doctor Atinko Sunday Ikeya at the Abuja National Hospital.
Chairman of the association, Comrade Deborah Yusuf made condemnation at a press conference to register the association’s regret over the unruly behaviour of the medical practitioner.
She explained that Dr. Atinko does not only fundamentally violate medical profession ethics but has also desecrated the international principles, conventions protocols and best practices.
She further explained that at the centenary labour conference held in June 2019, the ILO adopted convention 190 on violence and harassment in the workplace.
“Dr. Atinko’s misconduct was officially reported to the NANNM unit branch National Hospital and NANNM FCT Council, a congress was convened which resolved to stage a peaceful protest to register their dismay for the barbaric behaviour of Dr. Atinko. Since then, the union has been counting on the assurances of the hospital management that justice would be served,” Comrade Deborah Yusuf stated.
While narrating her ordeal in the hands of the medical colleague, Marvis said she was attending to a patient when the medical doctor demanded that she attend to another patient, adding that he approached her insisting she must dress the patient immediately.
She further explained that when she was wheeling a medication trolley out of the ward the next thing the doctor did was to slap her. Thereafter she removed her phone from her pocket and took his picture to enable her tender evidence because he wasn’t a familiar colleague.
Marvis used the opportunity to appeal to the management of the Hospital to apply punitive measures against the medical officer to serve as deterrent to others.
Also contributing, the Chairman NANNM National Hospital, Akpi Joseph Awujah and the chief Nursing officer in charge of female ward, Sadiya Garba respectively condemned the maltreatment, describing violence as an unacceptable act in the workplace.
They added that they were waiting outcome of the report from the management of the Hospital that assured them that the case would be treated in accordance with the civil service rules.
The Nurses implored their colleagues and members both at International and local levels to remain law abiding.
