….Niger Chief Judge Approves Lapai High Court Relocation to Rehabilitate Old Structure

From Dan Amasingha, Minna

The Chief Judge of Niger State, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik, has approved the temporary relocation of Lapai High Court to the Chief Magistrate Court Complex in Lapai.

The relocation order of the court was contained in a press statement signed by the Chief Registrar of the State High Court, Hajiya Amina Lamide Musa.

She explained that the relocation was a result of the commencement of the renovation works at the High Court.

According to the Chief Judge, with this announcement, members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Minna and Suleja, as well as litigants, should file their processes at the temporary location of the High Court.

It further directed members of the public and counsels to channel all their litigations and other necessary processes for prompt judicial and administrative action.

The Lapai High Court has been in deplorable condition for the last 10 years, as the ceiling board and entire building were almost falling down, forcing the workers to take refuge somewhere when it rained.

Apart from the ceiling, the roof and toilet facilities were begging for repairs, just as the judge’s chamber and the registrar’s office were not even habitable.

In a telephone interview with Newsline online in Minna at the weekend, the chief registrar of the state high court, Hajiya Amina Lamide Musa-Saidu, explained that the chief judge directed the immediate relocation of the high court during an inspection visit to the court.

She said during the visit, the chief judge discovered that the deplorable condition of the court would not be convenient for the staff to perform their duties effectively.

According to her, arrangements were on the ground to commence the renovation of the court; hence, the court has to be relocated pending the completion of the renovation work.

Police Recruitment:  13,992 applicants from Benue recommends for training as Alia set to improve facilities at training school

From Attah Ede Makurdi

The Nigerian Police said that, it has screened 19, 258  applicants out of a total number of 25,346 applicants shortlisted from Benue state for the 2023 Nigerian Police recruitment exercise and successfully recommended 13, 992 applicants for training, while 5, 266 applicants did not make the recommendation list.

The leader of the police recruitment team sent to the state to conduct the exercise, ACP Dominic Iornumbe, disclosed this during a courtesy call on Governor Hyacinth Alia at government house, Saturday.

ACP Iornumbe said the team which arrived Benue State on the 8th of January, 2024, had concluded documentation and uploading of the screened applicants, and were in the Government House, Makurdi, to intimate the governor on the overall success of their assignment in the state.

He told the governor that the Police Force’s high command and the Police Service Commission are adequately ready to recruit as many people from the state provided the facilities at the police training school domiciled in the state are improved upon.

According to the team, the facility currently lacks the capacity to train the number the government may wish, especially as it is also a training centre for applicants from neighbouring Kogi, Taraba and Nasarawa states.

He urged the governor to urgently improve the facilities at the training college in Annune, to increase the chances of more Benue youths who have applied for the exercise to be trained.

Highlighting some of their challenges during the assignment, ACP Iornumbe said apart from certificate discrepancies and the issue of applicant’s heights, a huge number of non-indigenes were discovered to have forged certificate of Benue state indigeneship, posing to be from local government areas such as Guma, Makurdi, Katsina Ala, Vandeikya, Ado, Ohimini.

He maintained that although such applicants were fished out, the governor should look in house and find out where the conspiracy is coming from.

Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia commended the police recruitment team for the job well done.

Governor Alia decried the high level of youth unemployment in the state, saying the police recruitment exercise is a platform for a good number of them to be taken off the street, making them employed and becoming useful to the society.

He thanked the federal government for domiciling and making the Police Training School, Wanune, Tarka local government area, as a training centre for Benue and many other neighbouring states, promising that his administration will work to improve the facilities at the Training School, for a good number of Benue indigenes to be trained and enlisted into the police force.

The police recruitment team posted to the state, composed of people from the Nigerian Police Force and the Police Service Commission.
