NiMet predicts 3-day sunshine, cloudiness from Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted sunshine and cloudiness from Monday to Wednesday across the country.

NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja forecast cloudy atmosphere on Monday with intervals of sunshine over the northern region.

The agency anticipated prospects of thunderstorms accompanied with rains over Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Taraba and Adamawa States in the morning hours.

“Later in the day, scattered thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Kebbi, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Kaduna States.

“The cloudy atmosphere is anticipated over the North Central region with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Kwara States during the morning hours.

“Thunderstorms are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi and Kwara States during the afternoon to evening hours,” it said.

According to NiMet, cloudy atmosphere is expected over the inland states of the South and the coastal belt of the country.

It envisaged thunderstorms over parts of Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States during the morning hours.

The agency forecast thunderstorms and moderate rains over parts of Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States later in the day.

According to NiMet, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are anticipated over the Northern region on Tuesday with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kano, Gombe, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara and Bauchi States in the morning hours.

It predicted thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna States during the afternoon/evening hours.

“Cloudy skies are anticipated over the North Central region with prospects of thunderstorms over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara and Niger States.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau States.

“Cloudy atmosphere is expected over inland states of South and its coast with chances of isolated rains over parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States during the morning hours.”

It anticipated thunderstorms over the entire Southern region in the afternoon and evening hours.

The agency forecast cloudy skies on Wednesday with sunshine intervals over the Northern region in the morning hours.

According to it, there are prospects of thunderstorms over parts of Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa States later in the day.

It predicted cloudy morning over the North Central region during the morning hours.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Benue, Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa States and the Federal Capital Territory.

“Cloudy atmosphere is expected over the inland areas of the South and its coastal states during the morning hours. In the afternoon/evening hours, thunderstorms along with moderate rains are envisaged over the entire region.

“Moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods. The public is advised to take necessary caution, avoid driving and walking through flood waters,” it said.

According to NiMet, strong winds are likely to precede and accompany the thunderstorms, citizens are advised to take necessary safety precautions.

The agency further advised disaster risk managers, agencies and individuals to be proactive to avert loss of lives and property during the rainy season.

Besidss, the agency urged all Airline operators to avail themselves of weather reports and alerts periodically from NiMet for effective planning for their operations.

Police Confirm Death of DPO in Lagos

The Police Command in Lagos State has confirmed the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ijanikin Police Station, CSP Bolaji Olugbenga.

The command Spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this on Friday night.

Hundeyin, however, did not give details of the officer and what led to his death.

Report earlier gathered that the DPO was said to have slumped in the office and died before he could be rushed to a hospital on Thursday night.

It was learned that the news of his death threw the officers attached to the station into mourning.

A source from the division said the body of the officer had been moved to a mortuary. (NAN)

Man Jumps into Lagos Canal to Evade Arrest, Dies

The Police Command in Lagos State says a man allegedly jumped into a canal and died to avoid arrest in the Ipaja area of the state.

The command’s Spokesman , SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated this in post he shared on his verified X handle @benHundeyin on Friday.

He said that the incident happened on Wednesday at about 10:00 a.

m. in Mosan Okunola area of Ipaja.

Hundeyin, who was responding to the report that the man had encounter with the police, who chased him into the canal, said the report was not true.

He said that the police visited the scene and met eye witnesses on ground who voluntarily gave their statements regarding the unfortunate incident.

“The young man was a passenger on a motorcycle, riding against the traffic.

“Immediately they sighted the police approaching in their vehicle, the rider made a sharp u-turn while the passenger jumped off the motorcycle, crossed the road and ran through a nearby tipper garage.

“People in the garage who saw him running towards the canal and at the same time emptying the contents of his pockets agitatedly warned him about a canal ahead.

“He did not stop but unfortunately jumped into the canal, ” the image maker said

Hundeyin said that the police officers, startled at his behavior, stopped their vehicle, alighted and went in the direction of the canal.

“The people around informed the police that the young man had jumped into the canal.

“They all went to look, waited some minutes, did not see him, upon which the police left, believing he successfully evaded them.

“The police officers did not speak with him; did not touch him, did not chase him, did nothing. The young man simply saw them and bolted, ” he said.

He assured Lagosians that the command, under CP Olanrewaju Ishola, would not condone any form of unprofessional conduct on the part of its officers.

The spokesperson prayed God to give the deceased’s family the fortitude to bear the loss. (NAN)

National Vehicle Registry to Curb Revenue Leakages – FG

The Federal Government says the National Vehicle Registry (VREG) Policy will plug revenue leakages associated with vehicle importation and improve operational efficiency in motor vehicle administration across the country.

Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, said this during a keynote address at a sensitisation seminar on Friday.

The seminar, which focused on VREG, was attended by decision-makers, vehicle users, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders from Lagos, as well as heads of agencies from Ondo and Ekiti states.

Edun explained that the policy would also offer stakeholders benefits such as improved access to credit, easier vehicle trade, better vehicle lifecycle management and enhanced insurance coverage.

The Federal Ministry of Finance launched the VREG policy in 2021 to enhance revenue generation within the motor vehicle administration ecosystem.

The National Vehicle Registry (VREG) is a centralised database of all vehicles in Nigeria, using the unique Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) to store detailed information on vehicles.

The VREG is connected to multiple global VIN databases and the network interconnectivity with Nigeria helps facilitation of global trade and crime fighting, amongst others.

Edun, represented by Hajia Jumai Katagum, Director of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), called for stakeholder collaboration to optimise and achieve the objectives of VREG.

He stressed the need for integration among key stakeholders, while explaining ongoing efforts to close existing gaps in vehicle administration.

The minister noted that VREG addresses the challenges caused by Nigeria’s status as the largest importer of vehicles in Africa, with over 15 million operational vehicles.

Edun explained that issues like customs duty evasion, inadequate data for vehicular policy, revenue leakages, vehicle theft and ineffective vehicle insurance coverage were tackled through VREG.

Also, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu if Lagos, represented by Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transport, commended the government for bringing stakeholders together to enhance understanding of VREG.

He noted that VREG would provide all levels of government with an accurate database for real-time vehicle assessment and crime prevention.

Sanwo-Olu added, “We are confident that with continued support, VREG will revolutionise vehicle management across the country, driving economic growth and development.”

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Deputy Controller of Customs, Rahmon Akintola, also highlighted the potential for enhanced customs operations through collaboration with other stakeholders.

Alhaji Yusuf Othman, National President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), noted that the association, which controls 90 per cent of vehicles used for cargo transportation, is a key stakeholder in national revenue collection.

Othman, represented by a member of the association, Mr Stephen Okafor, appealed for the implementation of VREG at no cost to transporters.

Mr Emenike Nwokeoji, President of the Association of Nigeria Customs Licensed Agents, pledged the association’s support for VREG’s success, saying,”no imported vehicle in the country is beyond traceability”.

During a presentation titled “Optimising Nigeria’s Vehicular Ecosystem for National Economic Development”, Mr Dennis Obeto, Managing Director of Fourcore Technology Solutions Ltd., stressed the need to make Nigeria’s motor vehicle ecosystem safer and more efficient.

Obeto, a private sector collaborator on the VREG project, explained more on the the platform’s functionality and its role in transforming the vehicular ecosystem. (NAN)
