NOA Sensitise Residents on Security Awareness, Human Rights
From Joseph Amedu, Lokoja
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has sensitised Kogi residents on security awareness and other critical issues that are central to the nation’s development and unity.
The Acting State Director, NOA, Kogi Directorate, Patrick Edogbanya, who led the official of the agency on a roadshow at Ganaja road, Lokoja urged the residents to embrace moral values and shun get-rich-quick syndrome and other social vices.
Edogbanya noted that the NOA Director General, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu initiated the campaign to sensitise Nigerians on five critical national issues, which include: security awareness, get-rich-quick syndrome, tax reform bill, campaign against HIV-Aids and human rights.
He stressed that the nationwide campaign was to mobilise Nigerians to unite with the agency in its commitment to addressing the pressing issues and fostering a more informed, secure, and ethical society.
“We have discovered in Nigeria that getting-rich-quick syndrome is one of the key issues why we are getting it wrong as a nation.
“We are also out to remind the people that HIV is real and still with us in the society. So, we want the people to take the necessary precautionary measures for its prevention.
“NOA is sensitising Nigerians to always be security conscious and report any suspicious movement in their environment to the relevant authorities.
“We are enlightening Nigerian youths to shun ‘get-rich-quick syndrome’ by rejecting shortcuts to wealth and embracing integrity, hard work, and the opportunities provided through government initiatives to make life better for them.
“Imagine this get-rich-quick syndrome especially through the popular yahoo yahoo which has become so bad that even the mothers of these yahoo boys are forming ‘Associations of Yahoo Yahoo Boys’ Mothers.
“This has become prevalent that the federal government through NOA is trying to address the menace. We are taking the information to the streets to ensure that this information gets to the grassroots.
“We must have value reorientation and ensure we do the right thing at all times,” he said.
Edogbanya urged landlords to carry out some security checks on every prospective tenant in order to avoid giving their houses to yahoo boys and criminals.
Also speaking, Pastor Augustine Ogbonnikan, the Head of Programme, NOA, Kogi said the campaign was going on simultaneously across the 21 local government areas of Kogi and by extension the entire 774 LGAs across the nation.
According to him, the campaign began with a press conference followed by advocacy visits to schools, religious centres, town hall meetings, and engagement with security agencies.
“Today, we are embarking on a roadshow to enlighten the public on the streets for grassroots mobilisation and this will be a continuous process.
“Our youths must understand that the legal means of wealth acquisition is through hard work, determination, dedication, and resourcefulness,” Ogbonnikan said.
He urged the youths to embrace entrepreneurship and skills acquisition so as to be independent and avoid social malpractices.
The roadshow began at under Ganaja Flyover Bridge through to Ganaja motto parks along the roads where flyers were distributed to the people.
The sensitisation was carried out in different languages such as Igala, Ebira, Okun, Nupe, Oworo, Housa, Bassa and Yoruba.

FRSC Targets Over Loading, Dangerous Driving During Yuletide Travels in Katsina
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina Command says it is targeting drivers who are in the habit of over loading and dangerous driving during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The state FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Aliyu Ma’aji, made this known at a news conference on Tuesday in Katsina.
Ma’aji said that the command was out to ensure zero road traffic deaths and crash-free during the festive period.
He said that the command had organised series of activities at motor parks, Mosques and Churches to enlighten motorists on the risks associated with dangerous driving and over loading.
Ma’aji also reminded prospective
passengers to always speak up against violations of traffic rules, dangerous driving and speeding by drivers in order to save their lives.
“Data indicated more passengers lost their lives than drivers during accidents,” the sector commander said.
He urged prospective passengers to always use faster channels to report road crashes and obstruction to the FRSC for possible rescuing without delay.
According to him, the command light tow truck had been strategically positioned in the event of any unforeseen eventuality.

FCTA to Ensure Effective Utilisation of Operational Vehicles by Security Agencies
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) says it has taken steps to ensure effective utilisation of the 100 operational vehicles donated to security agencies in the FCT.
Mr Adamu Gwary, Director of the Security Service Department, FCTA, stated this during the department’s end-of-year news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
The Minister of the FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike had in July donated 50 operational vehicles, equipped with communication gadgets to security agencies.
On Dec. 12, the minister donated additional 50 new operational vehicles to security agencies, totalling 100 vehicles so far distributed.
Gwary, a fellow of the National Defence College, said that the vehicles were marked to ensure that the FCT Administration gets value for the support given to the security agencies.
“Just yesterday we had a meeting with a service provider, who, through the Presidency, provided a reporting platform of crime statistics format in all our police divisions.
“We looked at it beyond just getting information on crime statistics. We expanded it to cover other components of the FCT Administration’s support to security agencies.
“This will give us a platform to ensure that whatever the administration has provided, particularly vehicular assets to help security agencies to perform optimally, are equally monitored.
“We will put our eyes and ears on those vehicles because they were given to them for the purpose of improving and enhancing the security situation in the FCT,” he said.
He added that when there was a need for the vehicles to be used outside the FCT, it must be connected to security issues affecting the territory, especially cross-border crime.
As Christians around the world prepare for Christmas and new year celebrations, the director called on FCT residents to support and cooperate with security agencies.
He said, “when you see something, say something and we will do something.” (NAN)
