Damagum Blames Party Leaders for PDP Crisis

The acting National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has blamed party leaders for the crisis rocking the nation’s main opposition party.

Damagum stated this in his remarks at the party’s 79th Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that though the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) was having little crisis, it was being propelled by leaders who were supposed to unite the party.

The acting national chairman decried situations where some members of the NWC would honour the invitations of some party leaders without his knowledge.

He warned the leaders against destroying the party for their individual political ambitions.

“You may have ambition but you don’t ride on a dead horse to reach your destination.

“If you create a crisis simply to further your ambition, you may get what you want but your dream will not be realised because by that time, you have injured the horse you are going to ride to that destination.

“As the conscience of this party, some of us are also complicit. We should look inwards, search our conscience,” he said.

Damagum advised PDP members to sheath their swords and be united, saying that the party was dear to all and remained the hope of Nigerians.

He assured BoT members that the NWC, under him, would do everything possible to hold the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by February.

“You are all aware that we have started the process of our zonal congresses. Even at that, I enjoin our leaders to also be mindful of doing anything that can mar these congresses.

“It’s very important to sound this note because in whatever we do, it is the structure you are building to hold what you have in your hand.

“We are supposed to bring credible people. We recently had congresses across almost 29 states, though we have problems in few states, but I know we are getting there,” Damagum said.

In his remarks, the BoT Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, expressed dissatisfaction with the crises currently rocking the party’s NWC.

Wabara said it was disheartening that the issues had not been resolved.

He said that the failure to resolve the internal conflicts had undermined the strength and credibility of the party.

“It is, therefore, imperative for NWC to rise above personal interests and places the survival and progress of our great party above all other considerations.

“In the light of these challenges, I must emphasise the urgent need for a NEC meeting.

“I again urge the NWC to honour its words and convene the NEC meeting in February, as scheduled,” he said.

Wabara reminded PDP leaders of the importance of electing credible leaders at all levels of the party’s structures, as the party prepared to conduct its zonal congresses.

“These leaders will serve as the face and voice of PDP, and it is essential that they possess the vision, integrity and capacity to steer the affairs of the party effectively.

“Let us ensure that the processes are free, fair and transparent so that the outcome will reflect the collective will of our members,” he said.

The BoT chairman called on {DP members and leaders to set aside personal differences and work collectively to strengthen the party in spite of the challenges currently facing it. (NAN)

The Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday, condemned the  state House Assembly’s declaration of the Minority Leader’s seat vacant.

This is contained in a statement by the state APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris issued in Gusau, Zamfara.

The minority leader, Alhaji Aliyu Ango-Kagara represents Talata Mafara South State Constituency in the assembly on the platform of APC.

The state legislators had during the plenary on Tuesday declared Ango-Kagara’s seat vacant over alleged absenteeism.

The state APC publicity secretary, however, described the assembly’s action as an embarrassment and  abuse of office.

“We consider the assembly’s action as a move to weed out the APC from the state assembly.

“The declaration of the minority leader’s seat vacant was just for political reasons to silence the opposition in the house,”Idris alleged.

The State APC appealed to the National Assembly to call the Zamfara assembly to order.

“We condemn the action of Zamfara assembly, we caution the state lawmakers that the matter may lead the APC  to approach a Court of law for proper interpretation and claim of  damages.

“We condemn the assembly in totality,

this is coming in addition to the illegal suspension of eight members of the house since January 2024,” Idris added.

The APC leadership in the state also alleged that members of the opposition party in the state were suspended illegally by the house without recourse to the constitutional provision or House standing rules.

“This is very unfortunate that the leadership of the house have been fighting their colleagues who refused to dance to their tunes especially as rubber stamps.

“Even if a member of the house found in violation of the House rules, he must be given fair hearing preceding any action and not the blind-folded action of those members who think their uniformed act will hold water,” Idris said.(NAN)

Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is planning another shooting by using thugs who will disguise in PDP branded attire.

According to the party, this is to carry out sporadic shootings in the State with the intent to cause chaos and crisis.

In a statement signed by Chris Osa Nehikhare,  Publicity Secretary

Edo PDP Caretaker Committee , and made available to journalists in Benin City , said it is the efforts by the APC to tarnish the image of our party and stir unrest in the State.

Stating that, “It has come to our attention that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State is planning to deploy another set of armed thugs, disguised in PDP-branded attire, to carry out sporadic shootings in the State with the intent to cause chaos and crisis.

According to Nehikhare, “we want to draw the attention of the security agencies to this planned attack on our nascent democracy and call on them to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice,” he stated.

He further stated that, “We want to dissociate ourselves from these planned shootings and violence and wish to inform the public that this is yet another in a series of clandestine efforts by the APC to tarnish the image of our party and stir unrest in the State.

“While we condemn in the strongest terms the violent behavior of the All Progressives Congress (APC), we want to draw the attention of the security agencies to this planned attack on our nascent democracy and call on them to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice.

“We also warn the APC to desist from the repeated assault on democracy in the last few months and allow the rule of law to be the guiding principle for governance and politics in Edo State.”

He  called on all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, the international community, and concerned citizens, among others, to raise their voices against these divisive and destructive tactics of the APC to protect our democracy, guarantee the safety of Edo State, and uphold the rule of law, he concluded.

In reaction, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Edo state, John Mayaki, said the Peoples Democratic Party is  orchestrating a sinister plot to stage-manage violent attacks on themselves, so as to blame the ruling party.

According to Mayaki, “the plot  is to tarnish the reputation of the APC,  distract the public from their failure in government and whip up public sentiments over the ongoing elections petition tribunal hearing.”

Mayaki called on the APC leadership in Edo state to prepared for the  calculated attempt at self-sabotage by the PDP, because it is aimed at blackmailing the APC, while creating a false narrative of chaos.

His words: “there is no level these people will not take their desperation. They will abuse democracy and blame it on their opponent. These gimmicks have been hatched to curry public sympathy over the ongoing governorship election petitions tribunal. I call on our people not to be distracted by the PDP’s divisive and destructive agenda.”
