The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun yesterday, visited Benue State following the latest coordinated attacks on Yelewata community by suspected Fulani herdsmen which resulted in the death of over 200 people with many others injured and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

Egbetokun said he was in the State at the instance of Tinubu who felt extremely worried about the rate of killings in the state.
He extended the Federal Government’s commitment to contain the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.Suspected armed Fulani herdsmen had on Friday last week launched coordinated attacks on Yelewata, a border community with Nasarawa State.
Tinubu had directed security chiefs to implement his earlier directive to bring lasting peace and security to the state.Tinubu tasked the governor to immediately initiate reconciliation meetings and dialogue among the warring parties to end the incessant bloodshed and bring lasting peace and harmonious coexistence between farmers, herders, and communities.Speaking at a meeting with Governor Hyacinth Alia on Monday at government house in Makurdi, Egbetokun reiterated Tinubu’s worries over the killings in Benue which also touches on the territorial sovereignty of the nation. Also speaking during the visit of the IGP, Alia appreciated the President and the Nigerian security services for stepping up operations to contain the attacks. He, however, lamented the surge of attacks on vulnerable communities and called for strategies that would keep Benue residents safe. The IGP later moved to the scene of the attacks in Yelewata on the spot assessment of the crisis in Benue. At Yelewata, the IGP vowed that all criminal elements, who have been operating with impunity in Benue State will be brought to justice.Egbetokun, who went to Yelwata in company of Governor Hyacinth Alia to assess the level of destruction, said the mindless attack is an attack on the sovereignty of the nation.Speaking with journalists after assessing the situation in Yelewata, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. General Christopher Musa, condemned the killings and commiserated with the governor of Benue State and the good people of the State. He described the attacks as one killing too many, saying that he is going to meet with commanders of security formations so as to change strategies in order to curb the menace.Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia, who lauded the IGP for responding promptly to the senseless carnage that took place in Yelwata at the weekend, maintained that there was no cause for the blood bath.Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has rescheduled his official visit to Kaduna State. Instead, he will travel to Benue State on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, as part of renewed efforts to foster peace and address the persistent conflict affecting communities in the state. The President’s visit aims to assess firsthand the recurring crisis that has claimed numerous lives and caused significant destruction.Special Adviser to the President Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga in a statement, said during his stay, President Tinubu will meet with all stakeholders—including traditional rulers, political, religious, community leaders, and youth groups—to seek lasting solutions to the hostilities.According to the President’s itinerary released over the weekend, President Tinubu was scheduled to visit Kaduna State on Wednesday to commission various state government projects. However, the official visit will now occur on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

Atiku Condemns Benue killings, Urges Leaders to ActFormer Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Federal Government and other political leaders to take urgent action in response to the rising violence and bloodshed in Benue State, declaring that the killings have reached an “unbearable crescendo.”In a statement released on Monday via X, Atiku decried what he described as the continued silence and indifference of authorities in the face of the “brutal and heart-wrenching reality” in Benue and other parts of the country affected by violent attacks. The former presidential candidate criticised the state’s response to public protests over the killings, saying the use of force on demonstrators amounted to a betrayal of leadership.Atiku urged leaders at all levels to prioritise human lives over political optics and warned that history would not be kind to those who “chose power over people.”He also stressed the need for a comprehensive security architecture and better coordination with security agencies to protect lives and restore peace in Benue and other troubled regions such as Plateau, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Taraba.CAN Calls for Urgent Action over Benue MassacreThe Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Monday raised the alarm over the continued horrific wave of violence that recently swept through Benue State, resulting in the tragic loss of over 200 lives in a series of coordinated attacks. This was contained in a statement by CAN President in Abuja.”These senseless killings have inflicted immeasurable pain on families, devastated communities, and further entrenched the insecurity threatening our nation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and pray for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.”For too long, the people of Benue have been subjected to recurrent assaults, often blamed on armed groups, without meaningful intervention or justice. This persistent failure to safeguard citizens and bring perpetrators to account has emboldened attackers and prolonged the cycle of violence,” the statement reads in parts.PDP Condemns Benue Killing, Holds Tinubu ResponsibleThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has in very strong terms condemned the gruesome massacre of over 200 Nigerians including children in Benue State describing it as another horrifying chapter in the history of the nation under the unresponsive All Progressives Congress (APC) government. The PDP said in a statement by its Spokesman, Hon Debo Ologunagba, yesterday that it was alarmed by reports of how terrorists and bandits invaded and overrun communities in series of coordinated daily bloody attacks, unleashing violence, murdering hundreds of defenseless compatriots unchallenged, while the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led APC government remain largely unconcerned. The PDP accused Tinubu of remaining largely aloof and resorting to passing the buck with his aides issuing lame press statements without corresponding urgent presidential action to guarantee the security of citizens in face of the killings. The PDP called on President Tinubu to end his lethargic approach to security and show leadership as the Commander-in-Chief and lead from the front by immediately visiting the troubled communities in Benue State and taking decisive action to end the killings in the country. It however commended the security forces for their gallantry and sacrifices to secure the nation, especially under an incompetent Commander-in-Chief, deeply commiserated with the families of the victims of the senseless killings in Benue State and other parts of the country and urged the security agencies not to relent in their effort to ensure the security of lives and property.People May Be Forced to Defend Themselves, Mark Warns FGThe former Senate President, David Mark has expressed deep concern over the continued and escalating killings of citizens in Benue State, warning the federal government that if decisive action is not taken to avert the carnage, citizens will be forced to resort to self-help mechanisms.Describing the killings as senseless, tragic and unacceptable, Senator Mark decried the deteriorating security situation in Benue, which has led to the loss of hundreds of lives and widespread destruction of property.Speaking yesterday through his media aide, Paul Mumeh the former Benue South senator emphasized that the primary responsibility of any government is the welfare and security of its citizens, stressing that any deviation from this mandate constitutes a gross disservice to the people.Senator Mark however urged the Federal Government to fulfill its constitutional obligation to safeguard the lives and property of all Nigerians, while calling on the state government, under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia, to intensify its efforts in ensuring the safety of the people. In addition, the former Senate President appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security agencies in identifying and apprehending those behind these heinous crimes.Stop the Killings, CAPPA Demands Immediate ActionCorporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has condemned in strongest terms the senseless massacre of over 200 persons in Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, decrying the cold indifference of federal and state authorities and the paralysis of security forces in the face of unrelenting carnage. In a statement released and signed by the media and communication Officer Robert Egbe over the weekend, the organisation lamented the vicious attacks which left many dead, scores terribly wounded, and families displaced without shelter or medical care. It denounced the atrocity as an “appalling new low in human cruelty.”According to eyewitness testimonies, attackers suspected to be herders stormed Yelewata in the early hours of Saturday, armed with sophisticated weapons. They reportedly doused shelters housing Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in petrol and set them ablaze during a brutal two-hour rampage. In a separate incident, another group of aggressors descended on Daudu, killing at least five security officers, including both policemen and soldiers during the hit.The ramifications, CAPPA warned, extend far beyond Yelewata and Benue State, “they portend a deeper rot in the state’s security architecture and the collapse of basic government responsibility.”The organisation levelled sharp criticisms at Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration and the federal government, describing their repeated assurances of security as “hollow rhetoric” that has failed to effectively address the root causes of the issues or translated into tangible protection in Benue and other insecurity hotspots nationwide.Civil society and community oversight, CAPPA insisted, must accompany this force to ensure accountability and prevent the re-emergence of rogue elements under different guises. It called for the formation of community-led peace councils in vulnerable areas, comprising both farmers and herders. These councils, elected by residents, would meet regularly to negotiate land-use agreements, resolve disputes, and defuse tensions before they erupt into violence.

Insecurity: Northern Govs, Monarchs Seek Six-month Mining Suspension

From Ngutor Dekera, Kaduna and Aliyu Askira, Kano

Northern governors and traditional rulers yesterday called for the suspension of mining activities across the region for six months, blaming illegal mining for worsening insecurity in many states. The resolution was contained in a communiqué issued after a joint meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.

The meeting, chaired by the Gombe State Governor and NSGF Chairman, Muhammadu Yahaya, had in attendance the 19 northern governors and chairmen of the 19 states’ traditional councils.
The Forum expressed concern over the escalating violence in parts of the North, including the killings and abductions recently recorded in Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa and Kano states, as well as renewed Boko Haram attacks in Borno and Yobe.
“The Forum extends its deepest condolences and solidarity to the governments and good people of the affected states,” the communiqué said, noting that the attacks on schoolchildren and other citizens had become “unacceptable tragedies” that required urgent collective action. It commended President Bola Tinubu for what it described as the Federal Government’s “firm response” to recent abductions and insurgency threats, especially the rescue of some abducted pupils. The governors also saluted security agencies for their sacrifices on the frontlines.“We resolved to renew our support for every step taken by the President and Commander-in-Chief to take the fight to insurgents’ enclaves in order to end the criminality,” the Forum stated.A major highlight of the meeting was the North’s renewed push for the establishment of state police, with governors and traditional rulers insisting that decentralised policing had become inevitable.“The Forum reaffirms its wholehearted support and commitment to the establishment of state police,” the communiqué added, urging federal and state lawmakers from the region to “expedite action for its actualisation.”On illegal mining, the governors said criminal mining networks were fuelling violence and providing resources for armed groups. As a corrective measure, they asked Tinubu to direct the Minister of Solid Minerals to impose a six-month suspension of mining activities in order to allow for a full audit and revalidation of licences.“The Forum observed that illegal mining has become a major contributory factor to the security crises in Northern Nigeria. “We strongly recommend a suspension of mining exploration for six months to allow proper audit and to arrest the menace of artisanal illegal mining,” it said.To strengthen the fight against insecurity, the governors also announced the creation of a regional Security Trust Fund.Under the proposed arrangement, each state and its local governments will contribute ₦1bn monthly, to be deducted at source under an agreed framework. They said the fund would help provide sustainable financing for joint operations, intelligence-driven interventions and coordinated security responses across the region. At the end of the meeting, the Forum reaffirmed its commitment to unity and collective responsibility.“Only through unity, peer review and cooperation can we overcome the pressing challenges before us,” it declared. The Forum agreed to reconvene on a date to be announced.Meanwhile, Nigeria’s worsening security crisis took a grim turn on Monday as bandits launched fresh attacks in Kano State, abducting 25 villagers, even as the Federal Government raced to secure the release of more than 300 Catholic school children kidnapped in Niger State. In the early hours of Monday, armed bandits invaded Unguwar Tsamiya—popularly called Dabawa—in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State, whisking away nine men and two women after shooting into the air and assaulting residents. The attackers also rustled two cows.A resident lamented the community’s helplessness: “We cannot do otherwise; most of us cannot leave because we have nowhere to go. This is our place, our land and everything is here.”The assault came less than 24 hours after a similar attack on Yan Kamaye in Tsanyawa LGA, a community along the volatile Katsina border. In Niger State, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has assured distraught families of St. Mary’s Co-Education School, Kontagora that the more than 300 students and staff abducted on November 21 will return home “soon.” Ribadu, who led a high-level federal delegation to the school on Monday, said the abductees are safe, though he offered no specifics on their location or the status of rescue operations.According to Daniel Atori, spokesman for the Catholic bishop overseeing the school, the NSA reassured officials: “The children are where they are and will come back safely.”The St. Mary’s attack is part of a worrying resurgence of mass kidnappings reminiscent of the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction. Security analysts warn that banditry has evolved into a “structured, profit-seeking industry,” with hundreds of Nigerians abducted in November alone. The Kontagora school abduction occurred the same week 25 girls were kidnapped in Kebbi State—victims who authorities say have since been rescued through “non-kinetic” means. About 50 of the St. Mary’s hostages have also managed to escape.Ribadu’s delegation, which included the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), reaffirmed the government’s commitment to securing the freedom of all abducted citizens. As communities from Kano to Niger continue to bear the brunt of these violent incursions, the escalating spate of kidnappings underscores the urgent national demand for a more decisive and coordinated security response.

By David Torough, Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said former Attorney‑General of the Federation and Minister of Justice,  Abubakar Malami, will face a team of interrogators at its office daily throughout December.A credible source in the EFCC said on Monday that the daily appearance was part of an ongoing investigation into the whereabouts of an alleged 490 million dollars Abacha loot secured through a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT) request.

The source said that Malami, who was summoned for interrogation by the EFCC on Saturday, was barred from leaving Nigeria for the next one month.According to the source, one of the conditions for his release on Saturday was that he should report daily to the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja for further interrogation.
The source said Malami would have to appear daily at the anti-graft office due to the volume of the investigation and the seriousness of the charges against him.”We seized his passport, it is the normal routine during investigation, but he has to report at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja every day for the next month.”He will be reporting for further investigation throughout December.”He will be reporting every day, starting from Dec. 1st to Dec. 31st.He will appear before the team of investigators for the entire month of December.”He will be reporting to EFCC for investigation for the period because of the volume of the investigation and the seriousness of the charges against him,” the source added.According to the source, a fact sheet on the former minister revealed that Malami had several issues to clarify with the EFCC within the coming weeks.“We have asked him to explain the whereabouts of the $490 million Abacha loot secured through MLAT.“We didn’t say he stole money, but he should account for the loot. This is one of the issues he will clarify to our investigators.”The commission cited the large volume of documents he must review and the need for extensive interviews as reasons for seizing his passport. The source said EFCC would not engage in a war of words but would release its findings after a thorough investigation.Malami, in a statement by his media aide, Mohammed Doka, on Monday in Abuja, however, described the EFCC investigation as a political witch‑hunt. He confirmed he honored an EFCC invitation on Nov. 28, describing the engagement as fruitful and expressing confidence that the probe would vindicate him.Malami described the EFCC’s allegations as baseless, illogical and devoid of substance, insisting they collapse under factual scrutiny.
