Over 22,789 Fake Certificate Holders from Benin, Togo Varsities to Face Sanctions – FG

By Tony Obiechina, Abuja
The Nigerian government has announced that over 22,789 individuals who obtained fake tertiary institution certificates from the Republic of Benin and Togo between 2017 and 2023 will face sanctions.
Minister of Education Professor Tahir Mamman stated this while fielding questions from Journalists during a press conference to mark his one year in office. Professor Mamman said stringent measures are being taken to sanction the beneficiaries of the fake certificates. “The committee set up earlier in the year to investigate issues of certificates racketeering from foreign Universities did a diligent work, by identifying 21,684 fake Tertiary Institutions certificates from the Republic of Benin, while 1,105 were discovered to have originated from Togo,” he said.According to him, the data which was obtained from the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, as contained in the recommendations of the committee has been approved by the Federal Executive Council for necessary action, adding that a circular to that effect will soon be issued by the Secretary to the Government of the FederationThe Minister said those parading with the certificates would be removed from offices whether private or public, as they are blocking the chances of people who suffered and genuinely went to the University. The Minister said; “We cannot have in our midst those who went to procure fake certificates and come to compete with our students who finish their Universities and their Polytechnic with their sweat. Some spent 4,5,6 or more years.“From the data obtained from the NYSC 21,184 persons are parading fake certificates from Benin Republic, Togo about 1,105. They simply attended schools which are not even recognised by those countries.”“In the case of Togo we have only three universities that are officially recognized to offer degrees and in Benin Republic, we have about five of them.“So anybody who has not attended any of these institutions is parading a fake certificate. From 2017 anybody who attended a University solely run in English language is wasting his time.“This number may be more as a lot of them don’t even border to go for the NYSC. What the federal government approved is that the Secretary to the Government will issue a circular to all employers, whether public or private, to fish out anybody with Certificates from these institutions,” Professor Mamman explained. He said; “The Head of Service will fish out anybody working with any of the certificates in the civil service. Their appointments will automatically be terminated.”According to him, the ministry under his watch took the bold step to sanitise the system for genuine certificate holders to enjoy the sweat of their labour.NEWS
