Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State says his administration has purchased  assorted grains worth about N1.6 billion for distribution to residents as part of the palliative measures adopted by the state government.

The grains included millet, maize and rice.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Bature Tofa, in Kano on Thursday.

Tofa said the governor disclosed this shortly before the commencement of the weekly Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Kano.

The statement said items purchased were in addition to the five trucks of rice donated by the Federal Government to the state, assuring that modalities had already been designed to ensure that the items reached the vulnerable people in the society.

It howevr called on the Federal Government to review its palliatives allocation formula to allow for more allocation to Kano, being the state with highest population in the country.

The statement said the governor expressed his administration’s displeasure by the hardship people of the state were facing as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy.

The statement said Yusuf commended President Bola Tinubu’s initiatives on palliatives, noting that the measure will help cushion the suffering of the people.

It disclosed that the state government was working out a plan toward providing cows, sheep and goats to empower women, especially those in the rural areas for self reliance and economic prosperity.

It said the governor also called on civil servants in the state to be punctual and remain committed to their duties, saying the present administration will not condone truancy and negligence to duty.

According to the statement, the state government will do all it will take to improve the welfare of the civil servants.

“The governor appreciated the support and cooperation by people of the state to his administration and prayed for the sustenance of the tempo for the overall interest of the people of the state,” the statement added. (NAN)
