The House of Representatives yesterday, was thrown into panic following reports of planned impeachment of the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The House, at its resumed plenary, received a Point of Order on privilege, from Hon.

The Point of Order generated serious concerns on the Floor, as the Chairman House Committee on Rules and Business, Abubakar Hassan Fulata, worried that the said Bill was being treated in line with legislative procedures and he was directed to distribute copies for members to study.

Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, said it was “stupid” for some people sit somewhere and fabricate impeachment over National Water Bill, while the country was passing through dangerous times with aggravated insecurity.

The point of order was favourably discharged and referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges by the Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, who presided over the plenary.

However, in a bid to straighten positions and score a point that the House was not divided, the body of Principal Officers led the leadership of the Northern Caucus and some Heads of Committee to brief the House of Representatives correspondents.

Sarkin Adar told journalists that, they could not believe the claims that members of northern origin were plotting to impeach the Speaker, stating that, “it is a lie, aimed at planting seeds of discord in this House.

“Everyone in this House knows that the Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila enjoys the support of this House, which is a joint task.”

He reminded that there were northerners, who needed his job from the beginning, but the north preferred Femi Gbajabiamila, a Yoruba man and voted for him.

Adar said they felt aggrieved and betrayed by the claims and demanded that the peddlers of such report must apologize to the north.

Washing their hands off any improvement plot, Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, told journalists that ” there was no threat to impeach Mr Speaker.”

He further disclosed that while they awaited deliberations on the National Water Bill, there was no supplementary document to the Bill against what they were to study and prepare for debate.

He said they were concerned with the current insecurity in the country and that the House should do everything to support government to address it.

On his part, Majority Leader Hon Alhassan Ado Doguwa said “the report is malicious, mischievous, baseless and unfounded. This House has never contemplated that, whether by the minority party, majority party or the Northern Caucus.”

He said the House under Gbajabiamila, had been very stable and the Speaker has enjoyed support more than any other Speaker.

“Femi Gbajabiamila is one Speaker that has enjoyed the highest level of confidence and trust among menbers.”, Doguwa stated.

He added  that no amount of distraction and mischief would get them derailed from the focus  to find solutions to the numerous problems of the country.
