Peter Obi Slams Tinubu over Multiple Budgets
By Mike Odiakose, Abuja
Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over what he described as “fiscal recklessness” in the management of Nigeria’s national budgets.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Monday, Obi questioned which budget Nigeria is currently operating, ahead of the expected approval of the 2026 national budget by the Senate on March 17.
He noted that since 2023, Nigeria has been implementing budget items from multiple fiscal years simultaneously, describing the practice as abnormal and harmful to public finance management.
According to Obi, President Bola Tinubu inherited a N21.
83 trillion budget in 2023 but later introduced a N2.17 trillion supplementary budget, which he said prioritised benefits for public office holders despite widespread economic hardship. He further stated that the pattern continued with the approval of N35.06 trillion for 2024 and N54.99 trillion for 2025, bringing total appropriations under the current administration to over N114 trillion in less than three years.
Obi expressed concern that despite the massive spending, budget implementation has remained below 50 per cent, leading to what he described as a crisis of credibility in public finance.
He also criticised the government’s decision to repeal and re-enact the 2024 and 2025 budgets with extended timelines, saying Nigerians were not provided with details of the revised budgets or their capital projects.
The former Anambra State governor accused the Federal Government of lacking transparency, alleging that treasury reports were no longer being published on the OpenTreasury.gov.ng platform and that no budget implementation report was released in 2025.
Obi warned that no country could succeed under such fiscal practices and called on the government to restore discipline in budget management.
“This lack of transparency is not accidental; it reflects a deliberate pattern of undermining public scrutiny and debate.
“The Federal Government has stopped publishing treasury reports on the OpenTreasury.gov.ng portal, dismantling a vital transparency framework inherited from the previous administration.
“In 2025, no budget implementation report was released, regardless of how poor the performance was! No nation can operate with such recklessness and succeed,” Obi said.

Adebayo: Nigeria Can Earn More from Farms Than Oil
By Mike Odiakose, Abuja
Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has called for a shift in Nigeria’s economic direction from oil dependence to agriculture-driven development, saying the country’s future prosperity lies in farming, education and strong local communities.
Adebayo made the call in Numan, Adamawa State, while receiving a traditional title from the Bachama kingdom, led by the Hama Bachama, Homun Daniel Shaga.
Speaking at the event, he said Nigeria’s political and economic challenges could only be addressed by changing the quality and motivation of leadership and refocusing national priorities on productive sectors rooted in the communities.
“The way to change politics is to change politicians,” Adebayo said.
“We must go back to our communities and bring forward patriots who love their people, fear God and are not driven by power, money or glory.”
He said Nigeria needed nationalists rather than ethnic or religious loyalists, insisting that every Nigerian — whether born a prince or a farmer — possessed innate greatness that could be unlocked through service to their community.
Adebayo also emphasised the central role of education and agriculture in national development, rejecting the idea of “private schools” and describing all centres of learning as public goods.
“There is nothing called a private school. Anywhere knowledge is taught is a public place,” he said, while praising the contributions of missionaries and traditional institutions to Nigeria’s educational history.
He revealed that he had contributed to the completion of a school project in the area and had earlier supported efforts to establish a university in Demsa, particularly advocating for a strong faculty of agriculture.
Drawing from his international experience, Adebayo noted that countries such as Argentina and Brazil generated massive revenue from cattle and soybean farming — far exceeding Nigeria’s oil earnings — despite Nigeria having more fertile land.
“When we are in government, we shall build universities,” he said. “But for now, we must help communities build their own.”
He concluded by urging Nigerians to raise a new generation free from bias and resentment, committed to rebuilding the country through honest work, unity and service.
“This generation will not be a wasted generation,” Adebayo said.
“It will be a generation of recovery.”
