African Leaders Find  Critical Path to Success – Tinubu

By Mike Odiakose, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu yesterday said African leaders have found the way to develop their continent, stressing that they are poised to build capacity to tackle poverty.

Tinubu, who was Special Guest of Honour at the swearing-in of President John Mahama in Accra, Ghana said African nations will uplift their people and build a prosperous future.

In his words, “We shall lift our nations out of poverty and build a resilient economy at our own pace.

“We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We have found the critical path to our success.”

Tinubu described Ghana’s peaceful democratic transition as a testament to the continent’s progress, urging critics to stop questioning Africa’s potential.

He said, “Today, I’m here not only as the President of Nigeria but also as an African in resolute support for Ghana and her people,” adding that Mahama’s inauguration was a source of pride and honour for Ghanaians, the entire continent and the Diaspora.

“We celebrate African Democracy today as Ghana and her beloved people mark the transition from one democratic government to another.

“This moment does more than symbolise another milestone in the evolution of Ghanaian democratic society.

“It lays to bed the question of whether Ghana and Africa are capable of democratic and productive endeavours. Ghana has answered that question resoundingly,” Tinubu maintained.

He urged African nations to strengthen their bonds of brotherhood and resist external forces that seek to divide them.

“While others may seek to demean Africa and keep brother pitted against brother, that shining star reminds us of who we are and, better yet, who we can be. We shall always strive to work together. Even when we disagree, we shall dialogue and discuss until we reach an agreement.”

Tinubu congratulated President Mahama on his return to power, describing him as a leader of “patriotic vision and substance” with a deep commitment to his nation’s progress.

He pledged Nigeria’s support to Ghana, emphasizing the unbreakable bond between the two West African nations.

“President Mahama and I share a deep friendship. My dear brother, I am here to work with you. You know you can count on Nigeria’s support and goodwill whenever needed. The bond is strong and cannot be broken.”

Tinubu called for renewed focus on subregional integration to address pressing challenges such as poverty, youth unemployment, instability, and insurgency.

He highlighted the need for closer collaboration between Nigeria and Ghana to foster shared prosperity and stability across West Africa.

“Your ascension to power should also mark a new and invigorated momentum in pursuing subregional integration and progress. With laser focus, we can tackle our people’s most pressing concerns,” Tinubu said.

President Tinubu concluded his speech with a message of hope, calling on African nations to continue building democratic systems and resilient economies.“May Ghana’s democracy continue to grow stronger. May progress and prosperity be your portion. Let us all look forward to a future filled with hope, opportunity, and prosperity,” he prayed.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will today travel to Accra, Ghana to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.

The inauguration, scheduled for January tomorrow marks Mahama’s return to power following his victory in the Dec.

2024 elections.

Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s 12th president from 2011 to 2017, will succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose tenure ends after serving from 2017 to 2025.

A statement issued yesterday by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s visit follows an invitation from the president-elect, who met with the Nigerian leader in Abuja last Dec.

The two leaders share a longstanding personal relationship, emblematic of the broader strong ties between Nigeria and Ghana, both members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

As the current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will join other African leaders in celebrating this significant democratic transition in Ghana.

Accompanying the President will be Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, along with other senior government officials.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja on Monday, January 6, for Accra, the capital of the Republic of Ghana, to attend the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama on January 7.

“Mahama, who served as the 12th president of Ghana between 2011 and 2017, was reelected in December 2024. He will succeed President Nana Akuffo-Addo (2017-2025).

“President Tinubu’s trip to Accra is at the invitation of the president-elect, who had visited the Nigerian leader earlier in December.

“Mahama and President Tinubu have a longstanding personal relationship, just like Nigeria and Ghana maintain a longstanding bilateral relationship.

“President Tinubu, as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, will join other African leaders at the ceremony.

“Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and other senior government officials will accompany President Tinubu on the trip”, the statement said.
