Plateau Federal Lawmaker Withdraws N100m Road Intervention over Controversy

From Jude Dangwam, Jos
The Federal Lawmaker representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the National Assembly Abuja Rt. Hon. Yusuf Gagdi has withdrawn his N100 million intervention on the Gunji-ShiwerDokpai road in Kanke Local Government area of Plateau State putting to rest the recent controversy surrounding the project in the state.
The lawmaker who visited the various traditional rulers of the benefiting communities disclosed his withdrawal of the constituency project stressing that the road project is still an ongoing project as disclosed by the state government.
The Parliamentarian however explained that he got the consent of deploying his constituency intervention on the road from the last administration of Simon Bako Lalong but came to fruition under the present administration due to government bureaucracy.
He said the road intervention starting from Gumji junction for the past 9 months has brought some relief to the immediate communities and expressed optimism that the state government will resume work on the controversial roads project as he withdrew his equipment from the site.
In his words, “I wrote to former Governor Simon Lalong to do that road, but didn’t commence during Governor Lalong until the money tied to the project about N100 million or so was released in December 2023 or January of 2024 and the work commences during Governor Mutfwang.
“This thing is partnership in the interest of our people, politics is over and it is time for governance. As a Parliamentarian, whatever I am bringing to the table is for my constituents to benefit from. I do not intend to undermine anybody and my statement was not to discredit Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang.
“I was told that I can’t start a contract on another contract that the road was awarded and is still an ongoing project because the contract has not been terminated.
“So, I have written to the state government through the ministry of justice that I’m taking the project to another different location, there are other things I can do to my people. You can see that the equipment has been evacuated to enable the state government to continue with the project.
“I don’t know the number of kilometers the road network covers but all I know was to deploy the little resource tied to road intervention in my constituency for the benefit of my people. So I have met with the various traditional rulers and people of the areas to let them know that equipment is leaving the site.” He explained
The Plateau State Commissioner for Works Hon. Joshua Laven reacting to the narrative of the House member noted that the project is still an ongoing project as the contract awarded and revalidated in 2014 was not in anyway terminated by the Lalong led administration to give room for a new contract.
He said the contractor, Hajj Construction Nigeria Limited who opens the virgin area is owing the state government money running into millions of naira which the Lalong led administration couldn’t settled hence the action of the state government towards the Federal Lawmaker was to avoid any litigation by the original contractor that will affect the execution of the project by Governor Caleb Manasseh.
That District Head of Gunji HRH Nde Caleb Lokum earlier appealed to the statement to come to the aid of the communities which have suffered neglect for years, lamenting that it is unfortunate that the lawmaker will have to relocate the intervention which his community will not benefit again.

Israel Ready for Handover of US-Israeli Hostage

Israel is preparing for the release of the U.S.-Israeli hostage, Edan Alexander, held by the Palestinian Hamas militant group in Gaza, around midday (0900 GMT).
This is according to the media reports on Monday.
The Israeli news portal ynet cited an Israeli official as saying that preparations for his reception on Israeli territory had been completed.
The Israeli army woud facilitate a safe passage from the embattled Gaza Strip to Israel.
They are in contact with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which would receive the young man from Hamas, as in previous hostage handovers.
The Red Cross vehicles would travel from the handover point in Gaza and take him from there to meet representatives of the Israeli army.
Alexander would then be taken to the Reim military base on the edge of the Gaza Strip to meet his family and likely from there to hospital.
Hamas said previously that it had been in contact with U.S. officials about the release of Alexander, an Israeli soldier abducted along with around 250 others during the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks. (dpa/NAN)

” The bill has been passed by the State House of Assembly and is currently awaiting the governor’s assent.
“All stakeholders must continue to advocate for a comprehensive legal framework that guarantees the rights of PWDs.
“This will ensure their meaningful inclusion in all aspects of society and enable them to access social, economic, and political opportunities without hindrance,” she said.
Bello noted that the policy dialogue created a unique platform for WWDs, government agencies, and other stakeholders to engage in constructive discussion.
“Participants developed a Joint Action Plan that identified key challenges and proposed actionable solutions.
“The meeting also integrated WWDs into women-led peace structures such as the Mixed Observation Team and the Women Mediation Network,” she said.
Also speaking, Mrs Rukaiyatu Tahir, Principal Welfare Officer, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, said peacebuilding among WWDs was a core mandate of the ministry.
“The rehabilitation department ensures the inclusion of WWDs in peacebuilding processes.

“The ministry also empowers them to be independent and productive, reducing their reliance on street begging,” Tahir added.
In her remarks, Mrs Jamila Babuba, Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), said the organisation continues to strengthen advocacy efforts for WWDs.
According to her, “FIDA provides accessible legal aid through pro bono services and ensures legal support considering mobility and communication challenges.
“We also advocate for inclusive legal frameworks that incorporate disability rights into post-conflict legal reforms,” Babuba said.
She stressed the importance of the unique needs of WWDs be reflected in new laws and policies that guarantees their rights.
NAN reports that on March 27, the Adamawa House of Assembly passed a bill to prohibit all forms of discrimination against Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
The bill, which repeals the Adamawa Disability Rights Commission Law No. 14 of 2016 and enacts the Adamawa State Persons with Disability Law Commission, aims to ensure the full integration of PWDs into society.
NAN reports that the bill, sponsored by Hon. Yohanna Jauro, the representative of Mubi South Constituency, was one of four crucial legislations passed by the house.
It seeks to create a legal framework that guarantees the rights of persons with disabilities and mandates their protection from any form of discrimination, exclusion, or unfair treatment.
Disability rights activists have long called for stronger legal protections and more effective implementation of policies to ensure accessibility and full participation of PWDs in various sectors, including education, employment, politics, and public services.(NAN)
