Police Arrest 21,296 Dangerous Suspects in 2020

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested a total of 21,296 highly dangerous criminal suspects in the just concluded year 2020.

The Inspector General of Police Mohamed Adamu gave the figure while reviewing the scorecard of the police operations at the Force CID and intelligence Bureau in Abuja.

Adamu also said during the period under review a total of 3,347 firearms, 133,496 ammunition and 960 stolen vehicles were recovered from the suspects while a total of 1,002 kidnapped victims were rescued and reunited with their families.

In line with this, the Inspector-General of Police, assured Nigerians of improved security in the year 2021.

He stressed that the Force will be unrelenting in the fight against all forms of crimes especially kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cultism, cybercrime, Sexual/Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), amongst others in the country in the year 2021.

IGP Adamu assured that the NPF would implement aggressive, proactive, intelligence-driven and community-based crime fighting strategies in its quests to make the country safer.

He promised the Force will take the battle to the door steps of the criminals and also expand its collaboration with the citizens and other Law Enforcement Agencies in its bid to flush out criminal elements in the country.

Meanwhile, in a renewed commitment by the Force to advance the gains recorded in the fight against crimes in the country, particularly in the out gone year 2020, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force arrested eighteen (18) criminal suspects for offences of armed robbery, kidnapping, cattle rustling and other violent crimes.

Eight (8) AK47 rifles, One (1) SMG sterling gun, 236 AK47 Ammunition, 12 pieces of SMG sterling gun ammunition, Two (2) Toyota Camry Saloon Cars, 2006 and 2014 models (already released to the owners), were recovered from them.   

Notable among the arrests, is the arrest of one Abubakar Umaru a.k.a Buba Bargu, ‘m’, 35 years, native of Kato Shiroro area of Niger State by the operatives of the Special Tactical Squad (STS).

Investigations by Police Team revealed that, Abubakar is a member and armourer of a gang that has carried out several kidnap for ransom operations along Lokoja-Abuja/Abuja –Kaduna highways and other major highways in the North-Central States of the country.

Interestingly, this group carried out the abduction of one Mohammed Ahmadu a.k.a CONFIRM ‘m’, 30 years, a kidnap kingpin and leader of another notorious kidnapping group in the North-Central when he came to their hideout in the forest to sell live ammunition to the group.

He was held and shot in the hand until his gang members paid a ransom of One Million, Five Hundred and Fifty-five Thousand Naira (N1, 555,000.00) only for his release.

Five (5) AK47 rifles, five (5) magazines and 120 rounds of AK47 ammunition were recovered from Abubakar Umaru at his hideout in the Forest.

Similarly, Police operatives arrested five (5) members of an armed robbery syndicate who have their criminal network and base spread across Edo, Delta, Ondo and Lagos States.

Travel Agent Jailed 4 Years Over N6.2m Visa Fraud

 A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 39-year-old travel agent, Adebayo Oyeronke, to four years imprisonment over a N6.2 million visa fraud.

Oyeronke had pleaded guilty to the charges of fraud and theft.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, held that Oyeronke was guilty of defrauding Rita Francis and four others of the sum of N6.

2 million.

Emmanuel who did not give the convict an option of fine, ordered him to pay N2 million each as compensation to the victims.

The magistrate also ordered him to undertake an affidavit of good conduct, pledging never to engage in any criminal or corrupt activities again.

Earlier, the prosecution Insp.

Chidi Leo told the court that the convict committed the offences between December 2024 and April 2025 at Barnawa Kaduna.

Leo said that the defendant collected N6.2 million from the complainants; Rita Francis, Mohammed Sadiq, Christian Baba, Williams Abiodun and Nathan Victor, with a promise to get them Polish visa.

He said after the convict collected the money, he absconded to an unknown destination until he was arrested on May 15.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. (NAN)

Woman, 31, Docked Over Alleged Theft of iPhone Worth N500,000

 A 31-year-old  woman, Opeyemi Bakare, on Tuesday appeared before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing an iPhone valued at N500,000.

Bakare, of undisclosed address, was charged with two counts of conspiracy and stealing .

The prosecutor, Insp Iyabo Oladoyin, told the court that the defendant and others at large conspired and committed the offences on May 2 at 3.

m. in the Dugbe area of Ibadan.

According to Oladoyin, the defendant stole an iPhone 12 valued at N505,000, belonging to the complainant, Mr Oluseyi Oba.

The prosecutor said the phone was stolen in Dugbe Market and was tracked to the defendant.

She said the offences contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs T.G. Daodu, admitted the defendant to  bail in the sum of one million naira with two sureties in like sum.

Daodu thereafter adjourned the case until July 8 for hearing. (NAN)

Prostitute Docked for Allegedly Stabbing Her Colleague

 A 40 – year old prostitute, Adeosun Adepeju was on Tuesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing her colleague in the stomach during work period.

Adepeju of undisclosed address was standing trial on a count charge bordering on assault.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Cpl.

Helen Ojo told the court that Adepeju on May 21, at about 12:30 a.m., at Ring road area, Ibadan, stabbed her colleague, Stella Mago with scissors in her stomach.

Ojo said that the stabbing caused the complainant bodily harm.

She added that the offence contravened Section 335 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.

The Magistrate, Mrs M. M. Olagbenro admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Olagbenro adjourned the matter until May 30, for hearing. (NAN)
