The Plateau State Police Command said an attempt to kidnap the State’s House of Assembly Speaker, Yakubu Sanda, was foiled by men of the command.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement yesterday in Jos.

According to Alabo, the incident occurred on Friday night at the speaker’s residence at Federal low-cost, Jos South Local Government Area of the state.

The PPRO said it took the bravery of the security men on guard at the speaker’s residence and the timely intervention of other policemen from the Rantya Division to foil the attempt.

“On Friday, at about 11:20 p.m. while the Speaker arrived at his residence at Federal Low-cost in Jos-south, three unidentified gunmen operating in an ash-coloured CRV Jeep, trailed him to his residence and attempted to enter his house to kidnap him.

“But their mission was made impossible by the intrepid police officers on guard duty, and the timely response of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Rantya Division, SP Ayuba Iliya and his men, who joined forces with the men on guard duty and repelled the evil act.

“However, the command is making concerted effort to track down the fleeing suspects and get them arrested,” he said.

Alabo said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Bartholomew Onyeka, who vowed to stem the tide of criminal activities in the state, thanked members of the public for volunteering timely information on security breach in their various communities to the Police for prompt action.

He urged the residents to go about their lawful businesses as the Police were already doing a lot to ensure the safety of all.

The 56 year old convict was arraigned before Justice Adekunle Adeleye on  Dec. 4, 2020 on one count charge of  defilement.

The charge reads that the defendant on  Oct.

C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.The victim’s testimony before the Court said, “my mother got married to the defendant, we were not living together but he used to sleep in our house especially when my mother was not at home or travelled.

“ On Oct. 26, 2020, my mother travelled to Lagos and the defendant slept in our house, at midnight he forcefully had sex with me and thereafter, blood was gushing out of my virgina. I called my mother the following morning to inform her but the defendant denied.“ He continued this act anytime my mother was not around, I used to tell my mother on her arrival but she did nothing about it.When he noticed that I was telling my mother about his continuous sexual activity with me, he started threatening me.

“ One day, he wanted to beat me and I ran out of the house, I met one woman on the road, I told her what happened and she directed me to the governor’s office to lodge official complain which led to his arrest,” she concluded.
