The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) says it will not be deterred by attacks from thugs in carrying out their lawful procession against Kaduna State  government on mass disengagement of staff in the state.

The Deputy President of NLC, Mr Ameachi Asugwuni  said this while reacting to attack by thugs on  peaceful protesters on Tuesday in Kaduna.

Asugwuni alleged that the attack was to deter them from their legitimate rights of actions toward bringing the government to order.

“The thugs used weapons and threw stones on our peaceful protesters, as I speak to you now, we have taken some of them for treatment resulting from serious injuries.

“We will continue with the warning strike and protest,  the injured ones will be treated and will continue the struggle heavily.

” As a matter of fact, the sponsor or sponsors only made us more determined.

“The only and best way to addressing issues is engagements and dialogue, using violence to address issues of industrial related matters will not yield results,’ he said.

Reacting to the alleged  arrest of the NLC President, Asugwuni said :  “I don’t want to believe it, I take it as a rumour because no government will take the function of the Police.”

He urged youths in the state to refrain from being used as instruments to unleash violence, as the consequences  would fall on them in  the long run.

“The youths should shun violence and look for their daily breads, and to those being arrested today, our prayers is for the police to prosecute them.

“If those arrested is for the interest of peaceful existence, we want to know the stations and divisions they are taken to, we also want to know how fast they will be prosecuted so that violence will stop.

“We must not give support to violence under any guise, we urge  the youths to be law abiding and refuse to accept the functions to kill and destroy because the senders children are safe somewhere,” Asugwuni said. (NAN)

From Sylvia Udegbunam, EnuguThe Enugu state university of Science and Technology (ESUT) Institute for peace, Conflict and Development Studies (IPCDS), has harped on the importance of peace in any nation, Nigeria inclusive, positing that no positive feat could be achieved in a conflict ridden- society.

A lecturer on good Governance, Peace and National Cohesion at the IPCDS, Dr.
Ben Nwoye, stated this when he led Phd students of the Institute on an internship visit to Rector, Institute of Management and Technology IMT Enugu, professor Gozie Ogbodo in his office.
Nwoye, who was accompanied on the visit by the Institute’s Academic Coordinator, Dr. Chiedozie Nwafor, averred that peace remains paramount in human existence and development, hence it has no alternative.
The politician turned classRoom teacher, noted that conflict from time immemorial has never done any nation any good, be it developed or developing, hence the need for all and sundry to always embrace peace. He said that the visit was part of the learning process for the Phd students of the Felix Asogwa led Institute.”It is an outstation internship visitation by the Ph.D. and Course Lecturer of Advances in Peace, Governance, and National Cohesion of the Institute”Nwoye further explained that the visit was “in line with the mission and vision of the Institute, in line with the course description” stating that they embarked on the visit with a view to engaging with the IMT Rector on good governance, leadership, and national cohesion. The former Enugu state Chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress said that it was also designed to explore potentials and challenges for the development of the state and the nation.According to him, “The programme is not a mere place for theorising, but a place where practice experiencing aspiration of the National needs, experiential learning is focused, and also about Taking Gown to Town” Nwoyed stated. In his remark, the IMT Rector, applauded IPCDS for its commitment in grooming students who would serve as Ambassadors of peace to the society on completion of their studies.Professor Ogbodo, a former Deputy Vice Chancellor DVC, Godfrey Okoye, university expressed readiness to partner IPCDS in advancing peace in Enugu state and elsewhere via the institution.Professor Ogbodo, however, advocated for the need to evolve a modern way of resolving conflict because of the contemporary technological advancement in the present day world. The Rector regretted that unresolved conflicts have wrecked serious havoc on nations across the globe, including Nigeria.Ogbodo highlighted some of the innovations his administration has brought to IMT since assumption of office in the last six months he took over the mantle of leadership of the foremost institution.

He said he met the expired curriculum and programmes on assumption of office, “but as I speak, “all the academic programmes have been restored because I declared a state of emergency on the situation.”Upon assumption of office, I discovered that over 70% of our academic programmes were expired, overdue for accreditation and re-accreditation and consequently, I declared a state of emergency in respect to the academic programmes””Then by the special grace of God, the governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, was very supportive and we were able to subject the programmes to accreditation on April 4th, 5th and 6th. “They came here and subjected all of them to accreditation, the officials of National Board for Technical Education, NABTE, came here this week. “On Tuesday, I received the official notification that we scored 100% of the accreditation. And more importantly, we were granted full accreditation. The first in IMT, it was not partial but full accreditation for all the programmes” he hinted.”The core essence of any tertiary institution and indeed any institution is academic programmes, and that is what we are here for.”In addressing your academic programmes, we look at it from two perspectives, the quantity and quality. What is the quantity, how many courses are you offering? Here we are offering 65 programmes.”That is the quantity and I can tell you quantity wise that we are good. Quality wise is still where I have an ongoing task to make sure that the lecturers attend lectures and teach on time.”I have started enforcing students’ attendance and enforcing that any student who does not attend lectures for 70% of the term will not be eligible to write examinations”.”I want to make sure that as students are encouraged to attend lectures, the lecturers also are encouraged to come and teach them. It takes two to tango in any academic institution. If students come and the lecturers don’t come, it doesn’t not make sense and vice versa” He added “I have set up two monitoring teams now. Every day they must monitor the lecturers, make sure the lecturers are there and if they are not there, write me a report. And the students make sure that they are there. “Every student in IMT today must enter the gate in his departmental uniform. In November when I came here, they could come in with anything they liked. And so today, that one is settled. If you are not wearing your departmental uniform, you will not enter the gate.”In my experience, any student that endeavors to attend lectures for 50% of the semester will have enough material and confidence to enter into the examination hall without looking for anywhere to sort. “There was a menace that I also inherited. That menace is called sorting. Today, I have also banned sorting and there is a popular cliche that the sorter and the sorted will be punished because it takes two to tango. “I have about 28 cases of people who have attempted to sort and we are handling it”. Professor disclosed.

From Chidi precious, Umuahia

In a celebration pulsing with joy, colour and resilience, children with cerebral palsy received long-awaited gifts of mobility aids, including wheelchair and CP table, at a Special Children’s Day event held on May 31, 2025, at the BCA Field, Umuahia organized by the Straight Child Foundation (TSCF), the event brought renewed hope to families who have battled despair in silence for years.

For mothers like Ihefor Chinyere and Iheme Ngozi Amarachi, who received a wheelchair and a CP chair respectively for their children living with cerebral palsy, the day was nothing short of miraculous.
“This gift is more than a chair, it is freedom for my child, and relief for me as a mother,” said a teary-eyed Mrs.
Ihefor, her gratitude echoed in the clapping crowd. The event, tagged the Special Children’s Day Celebration for Children with Cerebral Palsy, Clubfoot, and Other Disabilities, was a vibrant festival of inclusion featuring dances, sack races, and a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony. It was designed not just to celebrate children, but to underscore their equal right to joy, dignity, and support. The highlight of the day came when two children with cerebral palsy were gifted mobility aids — life-altering interventions for children whose families have struggled with both financial and emotional challenges. The gifts were presented by TSCF with support from partners including the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (Abia State chapter), reaffirming a joint commitment to sustained care.Obinna Uzuegbu, who represented the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Felix, praised the initiative, noting the state’s alignment with inclusive policies under Governor Alex Otti’s administration.“Under Governor Otti’s leadership, we are committed to ensuring no child is left behind,” Felix said. “Today is not just about celebration; it’s about showing that love, inclusion, and support are the rights of every child, regardless of their ability.”Also present was the Chairman of the Abia State Disability Commission, Mr. David Anyaele, who emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy on bullying and pledged continued advocacy for children with special needs.“Every child here is a future leader. We must ensure no obstacle, physical or social, keeps them from fulfilling that potential,” Anyaele affirmed.Children with disabilities in Nigeria often face extreme marginalization, with limited access to education, mobility tools, or healthcare. The symbolic and practical gifts given during this event were more than charitable handouts; they were affirmations of dignity and equal rights.Dr. Peace Amaraegbulam, CEO of TSCF and the driving force behind the event, recounted moments of discouragement in the organization’s early days, yet pointed to today’s celebration as proof that persistence and faith yield transformation.“There were times we questioned if our efforts mattered,” she admitted. “But days like this remind us: progress may be slow, but it is real. We’re building a future where no child is forgotten.”The event buzzed with inclusive activities, from a Dance Rumble to a Tag-Team Sack Race, and Tug of War, allowing all children, regardless of ability, to participate.Very Rev. Vincent Isiocha of the Methodist Church Nigeria led a heartfelt invocation, encouraging children and parents alike to remain steadfast in faith and hope. The Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), led by Dr Chizoba Achor, pledged to continue its partnership with TSCF, offering support through health initiatives and community outreach. The TSCF Children’s Day event in Umuahia was more than a ceremony, it was a declaration that children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities belong in the heart of society. Through the tangible gifts of wheelchair, CP table and the intangible power of community, hope was not only alive but dancing. As the sun set over BCA Field, children laughed, mothers smiled through tears, and a community stepped a little closer to equity and inclusion.“Today,” Mrs. Iheme whispered, clutching her son’s new CP chair, “hope finally came home.”
