There are geniuses in all corners of Nigeria, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says Nigeria has tremendous human capital and talents across all its region and opportunities will be made to enable all citizens actualise their highest potential.

Osinbajo said this at the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA) Dinner held on Tuesday at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

”The representation of the NNMA is a reminder of the need to pick Nigeria’s ‘first eleven’ for national tasks,” he said.

Osinbajo said that the idea of merit and representation by regions were not mutually exclusive concepts, because the Nigerian genius for achievement could be found nationwide.

“Often in our national discourse, we tend to juxtapose the idea of merit with that of representation as though they are mutually exclusive concepts and it is suggested that there is an inherently natural disparity in the geographical distribution of talent.

“Yet what the distinguished array of laureates from all over our country that have been assembled over the years shows us is that the Nigerian genius for achievement can be found in every corner of our country.’’

Osinbajo said that opportunities must be provided on a mass scale to enable all  citizens to actualise their highest potential.

He emphasised on Nigeria’s human capital potential and the need to pay more attention to the education of the girl-child.

“In so doing, we will renew our pantheon of world-beating achievers in every generation and continually rediscover the human capital for perpetual national growth.

“The awards’ representation over the years was a telling reminder of the need to pick Nigeria’s ‘first eleven’ for national tasks, irrespective of federal quota, tribe or religion.’’

Osinbajo said that the glittering cast of Nigerians that had received the Award over the past four decades was reflected more, not only by the variety of achievement, but also by their diversity of origin.

“The Award selection process is entirely indifferent to the confessional persuasions, ethnic origins or partisan allegiances of the recipients.

“It is sensitive only to the rarity and quality of their accomplishments.’’

“Today’s awardees and their predecessors represent the zenith of accomplishment; their exploits tell us what we are truly capable of as a people, and the heights to which we would soar if we would set ourselves free from the gravitational pull of parochialism and prejudice.’’

He said that if the pantheon of Order of Merit laureates reflected a representative meritocracy, it was also possible to apply the same standards in selecting those that were choose for leadership at all levels.

Osinbajo congratulated the award laureates and their families, as well as the chairman and members of NNMA governing board and associates and also recognised some past NNOM laureates present at the event.

The dinner organised in honour of the 2020 and 2021 Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) recipients – Prof. Olayinka Olurotimi Olutoye,  late Prof. Charles Ejike Chidume (2020) and Prof. Godwin Ekhaguere (2021).

The three distinguished Nigerians had earlier been conferred the prestigious Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) award by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.

The event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Olutoye was honoured for his unique contributions in the field of fetal surgery; while Ekhaguere was awarded for pioneering new approaches in the branch of Mathematical Physics known as Axiomatic Quantum Field Theory.

Chidume was honoured posthumously for his outstanding contributions in Mathematics, Physics and Engineering.

Others are Prof. Augustine Esogbue (2006 NNOM Award Recipient in Engineering/Technology), Prof. Oye Gureje (2008 NNOM Recipient in Medicine) and Prof. Samuel Ohaegbulam (2012 NNOM Award Recipient in Medicine).

In his remarks, Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Sen. George Akume, congratulated the awards laureates for their overall economic, scientific and technological contributions to the nation’s development.

On his part, the Chairman, Governing Board of NNMA, Prof. Shekarau  Abu, said the awards recipients had done exceptionally well in their various fields of endeavour.

“The awards are in recognition of Nigerians who have made national and global impact in their various fields.

“We are very proud of their outstanding contribution to knowledge, to the development of our nation and the world at large,” he said.

Ekhaguere was present at the dinner, while Olutoye was represented by his brother, Air Commodore Dr Olufemi Olutoye Jnr (retired) and late Chidume was represented by his son, Mr Okechukwu Chidume.(NAN)

He appreciated the IOM’s role in the country, saying the organisation could transform into a global ombudsman for migration issues.
Migration, according to the minister, is divine, and people should be permitted to move within the boundaries of the law.
The minister noted that issues such as climate change, land use patterns, and urbanisation have affected people; hence, there is a need for migration to areas with access to arable farmland, commercial opportunities, better living conditions, and prosperity.Bagudu assured the IOM team of the ministry’s cooperation and expressed a willingness to collaborate with the organisation to address both internal and international migration issues in the country, whilst noting that several agreements have been signed by the International Cooperation Department of the ministry to tackle migration challenges.IOM’s Chief of Mission to Nigeria, Ms. Dimanche Sharon, lauded the minister for his effective coordinating role, emphasising that the ministry is a key player in the country’s development activities.Sharon encouraged Nigerians to rewrite their story, highlighting the numerous positive narratives about Nigeria that the international community remains unaware of. She expressed a desire to harness remittances from the diaspora for development, noting that the receipt of remittances can enhance development, provide better nutrition, improve education, and increase access to health services. She urged the ministry to include Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS) in its development plans and to provide solutions for internal displacements, while also promising that IOM, as an organisation, wishes to support Nigeria in achieving its plans and programmes.Sharon stated that IOM is an extended arm of the government, supporting the priorities and needs of the Federal Government. Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State, on Friday, inaugurated the Enugu State Human Development Council at the Government House. He stressed that human capital remains the true wealth of any nation and a core priority of his administration. The Council is chaired by the Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, and includes State Executive Council members and heads of MDAs.

Also represented are the legislature, local governments, traditional rulers, church leaders, and civil society organisations.
Mbah explained the Council aligns with his government’s emphasis on human development and social investment. He urged the members to take the task seriously and work towards tangible outcomes. “One of our top priorities is eradicating poverty and reducing the poverty headcount to zero,” Mbah noted.
He added that the government’s philosophy prioritises human capital over natural resources. “Our last two budgets allocated over 50 per cent to social services,” the governor stated. In his response, Ossai assured the governor of members’ commitment to the Council’s goals. He emphasised that all government initiatives — from schools to roads — are people-focused. “All our projects aim to improve lives, and the Council will help us track and measure progress,” Ossai said. From Francis Sadhere, Delta

The Delta State Police Command has recorded a major security breakthrough with the arrest of several suspected kidnappers, armed robbers and cultists across the state, leading to the recovery of a significant cache of firearms and ammunition.According to a press release by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, the arrests were made through a series of coordinated intelligence-led operations carried out by various tactical units within the Command.

In a major crackdown on kidnapping, operatives of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) arrested three suspected members of an interstate kidnapping syndicate on May 16 and 17.
The suspects — Idirisu Yakubu (21), Bello Amodu (40), and Umar Mohammed Beto (38) — were apprehended in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The gang is believed to have been responsible for kidnappings in Delta, Rivers, Enugu, and Imo states. Following their arrest, the suspects led police to a bush along the Ughelli-Ozoro Road in Delta State where officers recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with 23 rounds of live ammunition and a pump-action shotgun with seven live cartridges. Investigations into the syndicate’s operations are ongoing. In another operation, the Eagle Net Surveillance Team based in Ughelli arrested a 53-year-old suspect, Benjamin Benemor, in Warri South Local Government Area. Acting on credible intelligence, officers searched his residence and uncovered a deadly arsenal which included one English Beretta pistol with magazine, an English double-barrel pump-action gun, an English single-barrel gun, two locally made firearms, and a battle axe. Fifteen live cartridges were also seized from the scene.Further demonstrating the effectiveness of proactive policing, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) intercepted a Jetta vehicle along the Asaba-Benin Expressway on May 15. Two suspects — Blessing Ngbajime (49) and Okpako Oghenhovo (27) — were arrested, and one fabricated Beretta pistol was recovered from the latter. Investigations are currently underway.Reacting to the successful operations, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi commended the officers for their professionalism and dedication. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to eradicating criminal elements and safeguarding lives and property across Delta State.“These achievements demonstrate our readiness to confront all forms of criminality head-on. We urge citizens to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely information that can assist in maintaining peace and order,” Olufemi stated. The arrests and weapon seizures come as part of the Command’s intensified efforts to rid the state of criminal syndicates and maintain law and order.
