Woman Bags 3 Years Imprisonment for N5.8m Visa Fraud
A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday sentenced a 40-year-old woman, Danielle Justin, to three years imprisonment for alleged N5.8m visa fraud.The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Justin after she pleaded guilty to a charge of fraud.Emmanuel, however, gave the convict an option to pay N50,000 as fine.
He also ordered the convict to pay N5. 8m as compensation to the complainants.Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant got N2. 4m each from the complainants, Timothy Sunday and Grace Leonard for Canadian and French visas/tickets, which he failed to deliver.“The defendant fraudulently collected the money from her clients and failed to deliver the visas and tickets to enable the complainants travel as planned,” he saidLeo said that the defendant converted the money to her personal use.The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State 2017. 2 in Court for Allegedly Stealing Employer’s N80m
Two employees of Cloud 7 Lounge, Taiwo Aponmade, 42 and Yusuf Qaudri, 24, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N80 million from their employer.
The defendants, whose addresses were not provided, were arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing, to which they, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Sikiru Opaleye, told the court that the defendants conspired with others now at large to commit the offences.
Opaleye said that the defendants, sometimes in 2023 and Oct. 27, 2024 at Cloud 7 Lounge, Old Bodija, Ibadan, stole N80 million, being proceeds from the sales of assorted drinks.
He said that the duo fraudulently converted the said sum to their own use without the consent of the owner, Mr Damilola Olaoye.
According to him, the offences are contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The Defence Counsel, Messrs Jubril Kareem and Adewale Oluwusi, asked for bail for their respective clients on liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olabisi Ogunkanmi, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N10 million each, with two sureties each in like sum.
Ogunkanmi said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and that one of them must be an owner of a landed property, while the other must be a family member of the defendants.
She, thereafter, adjourned the matter till April 8, 2025 for hearing. (NAN)

See Your Appointment as Call to Service, NBA Implores new Judges
The Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ibadan branch, Mr Ibrahim Lawal (Esq) has called on the newly appointed judges in Oyo State to see their appointment as a call to service.Lawal gave the advice in an interview on Saturday in Ibadan.The National Judicial Council (NJC) has approved the appointment of eight High Court judges for Oyo State.
The judges are: Opayinka Adeniyi, Oyediran Oloyede, Oladejo Olusoji, Oluwaseun Ademola-Salami, Adesina Jimoh, Yemi Adekunle, Olutola Adepoju and Olayemi Muraina. Lawal advises them to remember that they were coming in at a time the justice sector needed committed judges to dispense justice without fear or favour.“It gladdens our hearts that the appointment came eventually.“Recall that the Bar has been loud about the non appointment of judges, which has brought untold hardship on the lawyers and litigants.“The new appointment will in no small way reduce the number of cases waiting for adjudication,” he said.The NBA Ibadan Chairman also remarked that the new appointment would give room for quick dispensation of justice as there would be more judges to sit on cases.. Court Remands Man for Allegedly Defiling a Minor
An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of one Uzochukwu Chinecherem , 26, for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old. Chinecherem, a resident of New haven Estate, Lagos was charged with defilement. The Chief Magistrate, E. Kubeinje, who did not take the defendant’s plea, ordered that Chinecherem should be remanded in a Correctional facility in Lagos.
Kubeinje subsequently adjourned the matter until Dec. 17, pending legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. John Iberedem told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence on Oct . 13, at New Haven Avenue, Igbehinadu, Lagos. Iberedem said that the defendant forcefully had sexual intercourse with the minor without her consent. The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The section stipulates life imprisonment for any one found guilty of defiling a minor. (NAN)
