Yenagoa Residents Lambast Diri over Negligence

From Mike Tayese, Yenagoa

Residents in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, have lambasted the state governor, Douye Diri over negligence and abandonment of the town and concentrated the state resources in the development of his village that has not produced a drop of crude oil.

Diri in the last four years has turned his little village to a construction yard with establishment of different higher institutions in the same village while Yenagoa the state capital has been neglected.

During a  tour round Yenagoa metropolis by members of the Federated Correspondents’ Chapel (FCC) of the NUJ bayelsa state council, to ascertain the level of preparedness by the state government as the rainy season set’s in discover that all the drainages and canals were completely blocked.

Residents living especially along Epie Creek in the state metropolis, lambasted governor Diri over neglect of the creek that was supposed to serve as collection of waters during the rainy season but has been completely blocked with debris.

They say until the government takes a proactive step to dredge the creek, residents will continue to live a life of smiling and suffering.

In the course of the tour, members of the Federated Correspondents’ Chapel discovered that drainages around the state capital are not only filled with plastic wastes but also serve as refuse dumps.

The inability of successive governments to pay proper attention to the development of the sprawling state capital had spurred the immediate past state governor, Henry Seriake Dickson to describe it as “a Forest Capital.”

During a tour of the correspondents, it was discovered that most drainages that were supposed to ease the flow of water at the height of flood are blocked by thick grasses and wastes. While the monthly sanitation exercises embarked by the state government never helped matters as such days are more of mere exercise in futility as sanitation agents have never enforced clean ups but only extorted money from traders even as people are forced to only stay indoors till end of the exercise.

Some concerned  residents along the Igbogene area of the Epie creek who expressed worries over government’s nonchalant  attitude that has caused serious hardship to residents  noted that  the only  solution to  tame  perennial flooding around Epie Creek  is to  dredge the river that has virtually turned to ordinary ground.

One of the resident, Pastor Tariebi Blessed Kalakai, who spoke on the issue noted that, with all the billions of naira that is coming into the state” government should clear up the creek and dig it deep to a certain level of metres depth that can contains much volume of waters around the state capital thereby reducing the impact of flooding.

“Dredging the Epie Creek will go a long way to check the yearly flooding that has affected many houses around the creek. But most times governments go on crash programmes when flood comes which has never helped in bringing solution to the problems”.

“The real solution to this creek is to first dredge it and pile it from Igbogene to Government House , that is all, the government should partner with Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and do it in phases, people will be happy.”

“Government is continuity, if this government can’t complete it; another will continue with it, the major problem of flooding in Bayelsa State is the Epie Creek which is connecting all the communities. If the government can dredge it above flood level, it will help.”

According to him, the Netherlands and other cities in the world which have the same terrain as the Bayelsa State enjoy such dredging. Saying residents have been suffering the neglect by the government not to take care of the situation despite the billions that comes into the state every month.

Speaking further said, government inability to take proactive steps will continue to affect not only residents along the communities but even relatives of top government officials.

“We decided that let’s be suffering and smiling because we are all affected, even their relatives. The continued neglect is as a result of lack of government will to do the right thing when a huge amount of monthly allocations that runs into billions of naira is accrued to the state “.

” Posterity will continue to remember Chief Melford  Okilo, a one time governor of Old Rivers state who made some inroads in the area of flood control during his tenure as governor of the then Rivers state which included the present day Bayelsa state.”

Mrs Kate Wilson, also a resident in the flood infested community, appealed that the creek should be dredged and a standard bridge should be constructed to cross the creek to the communities.

“There should be a standard bridge to cross the creek when the place is dredged, because we have no bridge crossing this place” she noted.

Another concerned resident, David Patrick Igidi, also accused the government of causing the sufferings of residents around the Epie Canal. Saying most flood periods witnessed the presence of snakes, armed robbers and even corpse flow from a mortuary around the area.

His words, “The neglect of the Epie Creek and Yenagoa as a capital is caused by the government. No official bridge connecting communities by the canal. Government should open up this creek. Every day, during the flooding period we pay lots of money to get to our houses , snakes are all around our houses during flood, armed robbers also have fields day here as Corpse flows from a nearby  mortuary to our houses”.

But the Director General ,Bayelsa State Flood and Erosion Control Agency , Chief Omuso Wilson , who responded to questions from Correspondents’ on the sorry state of drainages and gutters in the state capital ,blamed it on  lack of funds as a major factor militating against  the agency’s activities.

He says the agency is waiting for the second tenure administration of governor Douye Diri to swing into action for it to also commence work on the blocked drainages.

“Funds have not been released. Once funds are released we will go into action .Now there is no SSG to apply for funds. Once the government is in place, funds will be made available for us to work.

“Since we came on board, May last year, we have carried out some skeletal works, even though we still have much work to do as the rainy season has already set in.

The director general, said by May this year, the agency will be one year in office, and decried that they only do things at the peak of the flood which he said was not too good.

“Some of us have travelled out and seen how places with similar terrain tackle the issue of flooding; we can do the same here in order to have a very beautiful and conducive environment.”

From Francis Sadhere, Delta

Renowned peace and development advocate, Mulade Sheriff, has called on the major ethnic nationalities in Delta State to put aside their differences and embrace peace and unity in order to promote sustainable development and attract investments that will benefit all Deltans.

Mulade, who hails from the state and serves as the National Coordinator of the Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), made this passionate appeal during a press interaction over the weekend.
He urged the Urhobos, Itsekiris and Ijaws—the state’s major ethnic groups and key drivers of its economy—to desist from actions that threaten peace and hinder the progress of the state.
The United Nations Peace Ambassador and environmental rights activist decried the ongoing inter-ethnic tensions that have, in his words, “chased away investors and delayed development.”“We cannot continue to fight ourselves, oppose development, and chase away investors that will create employment opportunities for our teeming youths because of selfish interests,” Mulade said.“I want to strongly appeal and advise our revered traditional rulers and political leaders to shun hatred and embrace peace, unity, and development for the interest and progress of our dear state,” he noted.Mulade, who holds the traditional title of Ibe Serimowei of the ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom, emphasized the crucial role of ethnic harmony in attracting meaningful investments and fostering economic growth in the state. He asserted that no meaningful development can take place in an environment riddled with discord and disunity. He also expressed optimism about the leadership at both the federal and state levels, noting that the current administrations are actively working to reposition Delta State for greater economic opportunities.Mulade’s comments come at a time when the state is witnessing a series of high-profile infrastructure projects and investment summits aimed at repositioning Delta as a hub for commerce and industry in the South-South region.According to him, the three dominant ethnic nationalities in the state must work collaboratively with government and non-governmental stakeholders to harness the state’s vast human and natural resources for the benefit of all residents.“Delta State is blessed with an abundance of human capital and natural endowments. Rather than fighting ourselves, let us harness the potentials of influence across the state to support the Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu so that Deltans can fully enjoy the dividends of democracy,” he stated.Mulade’s call for unity resonates amid ongoing advocacy efforts by civil society organizations and traditional institutions to deepen inter-ethnic dialogue and collaboration in Delta State. The CEPEJ boss further emphasized the need for inclusive governance, respect for traditional authorities, and active youth engagement as key strategies to strengthen peaceful coexistence. He added that long-term peace in the state would not only attract more investors but also ensure that development projects are equitably distributed and sustained across the state’s diverse communities.Stakeholders from different parts of the state have already begun responding to Mulade’s call, with some community leaders pledging to initiate peace-building dialogues in their domains. Observers believe that if such unity efforts are sustained, they could significantly alter the state’s development trajectory.Mulade Sheriff, a respected voice in both local and international peace-building platforms, concluded his remarks with a renewed appeal to all Deltans: “Let us choose the path of peace and progress. The time for ethnic rivalry is over. It is time to build together.”

2027: Otuaro Urges Niger Delta Ex-agitators to Shun Desperate Politicians

From Mike Tayese, Yenagoa

The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr. Dennis Otuaro, has appealed to ex-agitators in the Niger Delta to remain vigilant and resist the efforts of some politicians, who are bent on destabilizing the region for selfish ends.

Otuaro noted with concern the recent rise in politically-charged rhetoric and coordinated attempts by some politicians to pit ex-agitators and beneficiaries of the programme against the Federal Government even ahead of the 2027 elections.
He spoke at the end of the second batch of the three-day strategic Leadership, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation Training organised by the PAP from July 30 to August 1, for its stakeholders in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.
Otuaro, who presented certificates to the workshop participants and later hosted them to a reception at the PAP headquarters, admonished ex-agitators not to be deceived by such politicians and their antics. He described these moves as reckless and unnecessary as there is no basis for anyone to cause destabilisation given the Tinubu administration’s commitment to the development and socio-economic advancement of the Niger Delta. He stressed that President Tinubu was massively supporting the programme’s human capital development and empowerment schemes for ex-agitators and beneficiaries.Otuaro, while urging the participants to play their role as leaders, said, “We can all see the commitment of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to the Presidential Amnesty Programme. Ex-agitators and beneficiaries in general should not be deceived and distracted by some politicians.”Be assured that nobody will do it better than President Tinubu. As Niger Delta people, we have to thank the President for his genuine love for the Presidential Amnesty Programme and our region as a whole.“The President Tinubu administration has shown goodwill to our people, not just in words, but in action. The President has expanded the budget of the programme, allowing us to reach more beneficiaries and strengthen our reintegration and rehabilitation initiatives.‘’Furthermore, Niger Deltans have been appointed to strategic positions in key ministries and agencies. This level of inclusion is unprecedented and deserves acknowledgement. All we need to do is to be united for the President.”He urged all ex-agitators and stakeholders in the region to reflect on the progress made and not allow themselves to be used by political actors who do not have the interest of the region at heart. He said their focus should be on peace, stability, and development of the region, adding that “any call for confrontation or disaffection at this time is not only misplaced but also harmful to the gains we have recorded.”According to him, the Tinubu administration means well for the Niger Delta and it is important that his goodwill is reciprocated with support, unity, and constructive engagement.Otuaro reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the PAP would continue to serve as a platform for sustainable human capital development, empowerment, and regional peace. He called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to continue sensitising the youths to resist being used as tools of political destabilisation, emphasising that lasting progress can only be achieved through cooperation, not conflict.
