The 18 people who were killed during the attacks on Mbaikyor community in Mbalom council of Gwer East Local Government Area (LGA) of the state by Fulani herdsmen have been given a mass burial, Tuesday.Recall that on the night of Thursday, 7th March 2024, armed herdsmen had attacked Mbaikyor community, where they killed some persons, including a retired WO2 Army Officer and a boy.

It was gathered that two out of the seventeen victims were earlier buried, as their corpses were fast decomposing due to the gruesome way they were murdered by their attackers, while the remaining 17 were buried today.
Speaking during the mass burial, Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, said one of the best solutions that could bring to an end the increased attack by armed Fulani herdsmen on unarmed farmers in the state was the formation of vigilante groups.
Governor Alia who was represented at the occasion by his Deputy, Barr Sam Ode, noted that to underscore the importance of the occasion, the Governor who was not disposed had to send him to the burial to condoled with the people. He said it was a sad day in the history of Benue State, saying that to line up caskets like this, is unacceptable and pray such shouldn’t happened again.”Security is not for Government alone because there is no one that can protect you like yourself; you need to have a Joint Security Taskforce or vigilante groups that would be properly profiled and handed over to Government to handle them. “That is the solution to the insecurity we are facing in the state”, he stressed. The Governor also pledged to construct the road that passed through the axis to ease the movement of security agencies to the area in times of emergencies, adding that the community was also ripe for a police station. The member representing Gwer East at the Benue State House of Assembly, Elias Audu wondered why despite the availability of fighter planes to tackle such attacks, security did not live up to their billings. He advised that the relevant security agency should be reprimanded because they would have intervened in the crisis, using fighter helicopters in such a situation, adding that they didn’t when his people were under siege for over 3 hours.Audu however appreciated Governor Alia for all he has done since the advent of the incident, including the Easter distribution he made available to the victims’ families. The lawmaker also conveyed to the bereaved families, the condolences of the Speaker, BNHA, Aondona Dajoh, and his delight that Governor Alia was working towards arresting insecurity in the state. In the same vein Audu prayed that there would not be a repeat of such an incident that would lead to the mass burial of the people of his constituency.President, Masev Development Association, Prof. Vitalis Tarhule, noted that the primary responsibility of government was the protection of lives and property, even as he appealed to government to endeavor to protect the people. He added that similar attacks had occured in 2014, 2018 and 2024, bringing to a total about 40 lives that were lost, insisting that there was the need to establish a security post in Mbaikyor to check the unwholesome activities of armed herders.Chairman, Association of Mbaikyor sons in diaspora, Simon Kofi told the governor that his people had apprehended two herders and handed them over to the police due to their nefarious activities. He explained that their crime was that they told the herders not to come back to the community again, a situation which prompted the attack on his kinsmen.Earlier, an interdenominational service was conducted for the victims of the attack by Pastors and Reverend Fathers before the final interment.

FRSC Intensifies Enforcement On Use of Crash Helmet

The Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) in Oyo State says the command will deploy its operational energies to enforce the use of crash helmets by passengers and motorcyclists.

Mrs Rosemary Alo, the FRSC Sector Commander said this at a news conference organized by the command in commemoration of the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week on Monday in Ibadan.

The global road safety week, scheduled for May 12 to May 18, provides an opportunity to spur action at national and local levels to make walking and cycling safe.

The theme for the 2025 global road safety week is “Street for Life, #Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe”.

Alo said that the week aims to highlight concrete and specific interventions that could be undertaken by various stakeholders like governments, international agencies, civil society, businesses and schools, to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

She said road users, particularly vulnerable groups like pedestrians and street children, faced higher risks of road traffic injuries and deaths due to poor road infrastructure, unsafe road conditions and inadequate safety measures.

According to her, the use of a helmet reduces damage to sensitive parts of the body, including eyes, skull, brain and nose.

“Pedestrians, especially the elderly and street children often involved in commercial activities on roadsides, are particularly vulnerable to injuries from traffic.

”Motorcyclists in the same way, as pedestrians, are still a significant road user group that faces high risks of injury.

“As Oyo sector commander, I am proud to lead efforts that prioritise the safety of our road users.

“The command remains committed to reducing road crashes and promoting a culture of safety on our roads, “she said.

She further noted that the week long event would feature sensitisation rally, distribution of flyers and media broadcast awareness to road users.

Alo revealed that the command had planned strategic visits to selected schools for road safety talk, advocacy visit to fleet operators and orphanage home, as well as commemorative church and mosque service.

“These initiatives aim to educate and remind road users of their roles in preventing road crashes.

“We urge all stakeholders, including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to join us in this crusade.

“Together, we can make our roads safer and reduce the incidence of road crashes, especially those involving pedestrians and cyclists, “she said. (NAN)
