The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Echeng Echeng on Tuesday commended youths in the state for their active involvement in the electoral process ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Echeng gave the commendation in Awka when he received a youth group, Catch Them Young Initiative, led by the Executive Director, Mr Nonso Orakwe.

He said that the growing enthusiasm being demonstrated by youths in the state was an indication that the forthcoming election would be peaceful, devoid of violence.

“I thank God the youths, for the first time, are demonstrating much enthusiasm and energy which we should all be proud of and rejoice about.

“The Nigerian youth do not deserve to be used for violence during election, I’m happy they are becoming more aware that they have much at stake and that their votes would go a long way.

“They must know that election is a process to enthrone those capable of managing the affairs of the country,  and we hope they will come out enmasse on election day to exercise their franchise,” he said.

Echeng promised to work with the youth group to ensure that  the 2023 general election was peaceful.

“I’m happy you are starting quite early to mobilise the youth and get them involved in the process, through sensitisation programmes.

“The Federal Government is committed to delivering free, fair and credible elections, there is no favoured party or politician.

“The Inspector-General is also committed to the process, including training of officers, part of which is the ongoing seminar on election management across all zones in the country, ” he said.

Earlier, Orakwe, who is also the Southeast Coordinator, Vote Not Fight Initiative, said that the group was committed to promoting good governance, democratic principles and civic engagements.

He said that the visit was to partner with the Nigeria Police Force to prevent electoral violence in the state.

“Our vision is to see young people being proactive in good governance and community development in the Southeast, as well as providing them with necessary information to shun all forms of violence.

“Our partnership with the police during last Nov. 6, 2021 Governorship election yielded massive result. Today we are given another task not only in the state but the entire Southeast.

“We want to partner with you, with religious, traditional and youth organisations, the Independent National Electoral Commission, National Orientation Agency and  persons with disabilities to ensure a hitch-free election, ” Orakwe said.
