2023: Time for Southerners to Produce the Next President – Sen Ndume
By Idris Umar, Abuja
Senator Ali Ndume representing Borno Borno South under the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it is time for the Southerner to produce the next president, saying the ruling party will be defeated if the South is schemed out of the APC ticket.
Ndume, who leads the campaign of the former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, made this known to newsmen saying it was not an excuse for APC to pick its candidate from the North because of the plans by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to field Atiku.
“It is not an excuse for us to pick our candidate in the North because they said PDP is planning to pick from the region. In APC, it’s the turn of the South and we need to all support them to actualize this.
“If we do justice, God will be with us. At the age of 63, God has done everything for me and I will stand by justice, even if I’m the only one. They supported us and this is our turn to support them. This is justice,” The Borno Senator said.
Also reacting on the issue, Professor Kamilu Sani Fage, a renowned political scientist, said it was not surprising that the major parties were eyeing each other ahead of choosing their presidential candidates.
He, however, said if the APC ended up picking its presidential candidate from the North, it will eventually create a political problem for the country in the sense that in the future, it will be difficult to create the kind of alliance like the one that brought it to power because of the seed of distrust that this decision would have sown.
On whether the decision has the potential of leading to the disintegration of the country, Fage said it will not because even though Nigerian politicians have their ways of creating problems because of personal ambitions, they always make sure not to overheat the polity to the point that it will lead to disintegration because they tend to benefit more from a united Nigeria.
According to a source, a push for a northerner to pick the presidential ticket of the APC has intensified ahead of the ruling party’s primary election slated for May 30 – June 1.
There are 28 presidential aspirants in the APC, four of them are from the North, including the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello; Jigawa State Governor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar and a former Zamfara State Governor, Sen. Ahmed Yarima, are from the northern part of the country. The push, it was gathered made the four of them to pick the forms.
However, chieftains of the ruling party from the southern part of the country are saying the party should consider earlier gentleman’s agreement, while those promoting the retention of the presidency in the North have described as non-existent.
Arrangements have gone far for the party’s flag bearer to emerge from the northern part of the country.
Northern elders, governors, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party and lawmakers are behind promoting the agenda of Northerner to succeed President Buhari in the next general election, the source said.

How El-Rufai Was Expelled From SDP – Adebayo
By Mike Odiakose, Abuja
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has explained the circumstances that led to the expulsion of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai from the party, while also distancing the SDP from several prominent politicians now positioning themselves in opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a recent interview, Adebayo said El-Rufai’s problems with the party began shortly after the former governor publicly announced that he had joined the SDP.
According to him, party officials at the ward, local government and state levels reportedly had no record of El-Rufai’s registration when they began inquiries following the announcement.
“The ward complained that they saw him on television saying he had joined the party, but they had not seen him register,” Adebayo said, adding that investigations by the national leadership revealed irregularities in the membership process.
He claimed that El-Rufai obtained a membership card independently and created a separate register rather than completing the proper registration procedure through the party’s grassroots structure.
The SDP leadership, he said, initially attempted to resolve the issue by asking the former governor to regularise his membership through the appropriate channels.
However, Adebayo alleged that tensions escalated when El-Rufai began holding meetings with national officials and making public pronouncements on behalf of the party.
He also claimed that the former governor pushed for the admission of a coalition of politicians into the SDP without undergoing the party’s internal screening process.
Party officials eventually disciplined El-Rufai after he allegedly ignored repeated warnings to follow the party’s rules, leading to his expulsion.
Beyond El-Rufai’s case, Adebayo criticised what he described as attempts by members of Nigeria’s “old political establishment” to regroup under opposition platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.
He mentioned figures such as former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami and former Senate President David Mark, arguing that many politicians now presenting themselves as opposition had previously spent years in government without addressing the governance challenges they currently condemn.
According to Adebayo, the SDP would not align with such figures if doing so undermines the party’s push for a political reset in the country.
“Our position is that Nigerians need a clean break from the past,” he said, adding that the party intends to build a movement driven by ordinary citizens rather than alliances among political elites.
Adebayo maintained that the SDP’s focus ahead of the 2027 election would be on mobilising voters and presenting what he described as a credible alternative to the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
