The Commander of the Special Task Force saddled with the responsibility of maintaining peace on the Plateau, some parts of Bauchi and Southern Kaduna state, code named ‘Operation Safe Haven’, Major General Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, has called on the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) Barkin-Ladi Chapter to avoid taken laws into their hands.
He said appreciable progress has been made in recovering some of the rustled cattle, stressing that the State government was aware of their predicament and efforts were being made to address the lingering menace once and for all.
The Media Officer of the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Major Ibrahim Shittu stated this in a press release in Jos the Plateau State capital, at the weekend.
He said the peace meeting was held at the Headquarters, Sector 4 Barkin-Ladi with key leaders of Miyetti Allah following the recent cattle rustling reports within the District.
In his address, Commander OPSH said that the meeting became imperative to appease the association and to discuss the way forward. “I urge you to remain calm and avoid taking laws into your hands,” he told the association’s leaders present at the meeting.
The Chairman MACBAN Barkin-Ladi, Alhaji Shuaibu Bayero, who spoke on behalf of the association, commended the Commander of the Special Force for his efforts towards bringing lasting peace to Plateau State since his assumption in office.
Bayero expressed concern that their livelihoods depended on their cattle and therefore, recovering them will do them good.
He gave assurance that his members will be cautioned to any form of violence or attacks by way of addressing their grievances.
The meeting about a week after last week Sunday’s attack of the Founder of CAPRO International Rev. Bayo Famonure and his family by suspected Fulani gunmen at the Mission Centre in Gana-Ropp village of Barkin-Ladi.
Meanwhile, the Media Officer to the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) Major Ibrahim Shittu responding on the update of the Sunday attack at Gana-Rop via a whatsapp chat said “investigation is still ongoing,” to fish out the perpetrators of the act.
