Court Sentences Student to 6 Months Imprisonment for Stealing Dogs

A Central Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama  in Jos on Friday, sentenced a 15-year-old student , Bilal Ibrahim  to six months in  prison for stealing  two dogs.

A panel of two magistrates, Ghazali Adam and Hyacinth Dolnaan, who sentenced Ibrahim after he pleaded guilty to the offence, however, gave him an option to pay a fine of N20,000 or spend three months in prison.

The magistrates also ordered the convict to pay N50,000 in damages and in default to spend another three months in prison.

They said that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal act.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported at the Angwan Rogo Police Station on Jan.

21, by Hamisu Idris of Angwan Rogo Jos, who was the complainant.

Gokwat said that the convict conspired with Alias Khalifa, now at large and stole the complainant’s dogs worth N50,000.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 272 of the Plateau State Penal Code Law (NAN).

Man Remanded for Allegedly Raping Physically Challenged Teen

An Ikorodu Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 50-year-old man, Linus Anozie, in a correctional center for allegedly engaging in anal intercourse with an 18-year-old physically challenged person.

Anozie, whose address was not provided, is standing trial on a one-count charge of sexual assault.

A. Sonuga did not take the defendant’s plea.

He remanded him in a correctional facility and ordered that the file be sent to the office of the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Sonuga adjourned the case until July 31, pending legal advice.

Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Aminu Isaac, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 9 at about 11.

00 a.m. at Ogunlana Estate, Akin Ogunlewe Street, in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu.

He told the court that the defendant unlawfully had anal intercourse with an 18-year-old physically challenged man (name withheld), without his consent.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravene the provisions of Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (NAN)

Police Arraign Man Over Alleged Assault

 The Police in Lagos on Wednesday arraigned a 36-year-old man, Joseph Obuseh, in a Badagry Chief Magistrates` Court for allegedly assaulting a man by cutting his forehead with a cutlass.

The defendant, whose address is unknown, is being charged with assault; however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp Ayodele Adeosun told the Court that the defendant committed the offence on Feb.

00.a.m, at No. 24, James Arigbabuwo Str., Igbekele, Morogbo, Badagry, Lagos.

Adeosun alleged that the defendant unlawfully assaulted Imonigia Ameem by using a cutlass to cut his forehead, which caused him bodily harm.

“He ran away for two months after the incident but was arrested and handed over to the Police for prosecution.

“The offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015,” he said.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said one of the sureties must be gainfully employed.

Adekomaiya adjourned the case until July 15, for mention. (NAN)

Court Remands Man, 24, Over Alleged Rape

 An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, ordered the remand of a 24-year-old man, Elijah Innocent, at the correctional centre in Ado-Ekiti for alleged rape.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is facing trial for alleged rape.

His plea was however not taken by the Chief Magistrate.

The Police prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 19 at about 12:30 a.

m., in Oye-Ekiti.

Oriyomi alleged that the defendant raped a 19-year-old student of Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.

He said that according to the statement of the victim, the defendant went to the victim’s hostel, met the victim and her friend and demanded for their phones.

He added that the defendant, thereafter, asked the victim’s friend to go inside the kitchen, and raped her.

According to him, the offence contravenes Section 265(1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in the correctional centre pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, ordered the remand of the defendant at the correctional centre, pending issuance of legal advice.

He adjourned the case till July 8 for mention.

In a separate matter involving the defendant, Oriyomi told the court that the defendant and others now at large committed an offence of stealing on Feb.2 at about 12:40 p.m in Oye-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant and others at large stole one Techno phone and one power bank both valued at N185, 000 belonging to one Ige Favour.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Oriyomi said the offence contravened Section 302(1) (a) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

However the counsel to the defendant, Mr Oluwafemi Alabi, urged the court to grant the defendant bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case till July 8 for hearing. (NAN)
