From Joseph Amedu, Lokoja

The Kogi State Inter-Religious Council, (KOSIREC), has called on the Federal Government to set up an effective committee that will fight against rising cases of kidnapping, banditry and other criminalities across the country.

The Religious Council at its meeting in Lokoja Tuesday, said that the committee  should be mandated to meet the people both in open and secret places, urban and local warring parties in the spirit of building a better Nigeria.

The Kogi State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN),  Bishop John Ibenu made the call while speaking on the state of the nation during the  forum.

Ibenu suggested that the Committee should  include the religious, youth and leaders of thought representatives  who could link up with extreme groups, saying ” force alone cannot solve all our problems”.

“As we are all aware, the nation is passing through a very trying period that nobody needs to enumerate one by one. When we consider the news of Kidnapping, Banditry, Regional crisis, Food security/Plight of farmers, Economic challenges among several others, we can only turn to God for mercy, forgiveness, and help.

“Comparatively, Kogi State is far ahead of the Northern States when we speak of security issues. At this point, we cannot continue to dwell on the problems but we need to come together for Brainstorming and Critical Thinking both for our State and the Nation at large. There is nothing wrong if the solution to the myriads of the problem of the Nation comes out of Kogi State.

“The atmosphere is toxic, the social media is toxic, political tones are toxic and several utterances are counterproductive to the peace we seek just as we can see. we need to intentionally and humbly tone down all the ungodly rhetoric, condemn what needs to be condemned and open genuine doors for dialogue,” he said.

Ibenu however, called on Nigerians to be fervent in prayers, preach the fear of God and support the government genuinely to overcome the present challenges.

In his remarks,  the Kogi State Chairman, Jama’tu Nasril Islam,  (JNI), Ambassador Usman Bello, sued for peace and unity among the people to put an end to the incessant killings in the nation.

He said everybody should be a stakeholder over insecurity bedeviling the country adding that  through collective efforts, insecurity will be a thing of the past in Nigeria.

” Government alone cannot do it. The people must come together for the government to defeat this individuals causing pains in our land. We thank Kogi State Government for their relentless efforts in safeguarding the lives and properties in the state. We are however, using this opportunity to urge them to do more” he stated.

Veteran Sports Journalist and Commissioner for Sports Development in Akwa Ibom State, Paul Bassey, has hailed the state Governor, Pastor Umo Eno over what he described as the prevailing peace in the state.

“ If naysayers pretend they cannot see anything Governor Umo Eno has done, can they deny the peace we are witnessing in Akwa Ibom today, Unprecedented peace?” Bassey in a goodwill message delivered at the 25th Annual Convention of the Apostolic Church, Atabong Area in Eket Local Govt.

“ It is a coincidence that the Theme of this Convention is “ The Peace of God” and it reminds me of the peace God has used our Governor to bear on our state.

“ Before now, you cannot even worship in peace as bandits raided churches on Sunday mornings, shot and killed, abducted worshippers, threatened oppositions.

“ Please let us tell our Children and family members that in the past, at times like this, houses and cars were burnt, terror everywhere and you can hardly sleep with your two eyes closed “ the Eket ward 2 Urban leader said.

The Elder of the Apostolic Church reminded the congregation that “this governor is not only a son of Eket, he is a spiritual son of The Apostolic Church and must be embraced and supported for a second term “ and this drew a thunderous “Amen” from the mammoth crowd.

Elder Bassey said  without peace there would be no development and as a member of His the Governor’s  “First Eleven” he was better placed to talk about “this grass roots Governor, whose programs are tailored towards the welfare of the less privileged in society especially in the areas of health, education and in my case, the empowerment of youth through sports .“

In his sermon, the Eket Field Superintendent of The Apostolic church Pastor(Dr) B. E. Okon enjoined Christians to embrace the peace of God that eliminates fear and life’s challenges.

Drawing his text from Mathew 5:9 the Deputy Territorial Chairman of The Apostolic Church insisted that  “blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called children of God”

Elder Bassey in company of other dignitaries including Pastor Etangkanga, vice chairman Esit Eket Local government, village head of Atabong Dr Ikwang later joined the Field Superintendent and the host Area Superintendent Pastor O. D James to cut the 25th anniversary Convention cake.

*Palm Sunday: Show Empathy, Ease Nigerians’ Burden, CAN urges Leaders………laments state of nation

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), at the weekend said in view of the current economic crunch in Nigeria, leaders must not be loud, but be restraints, have empathy and be focused on the common good of the people.

In a statement issued by Archbishop Daniel Okoh,President,CAN, in commemoration of Palm Sunday in Abuja.

The CAN President, lamented about the state of the nation, saying families are feeling the weight of time, cost of living is rising and normal daily lives is getting harder for families.

He said food cost is rising, transportation is high and for many Nigerians is how to stay afloat.

He said it is at this time leaders must make decisions that would ease the pain and burdens of Nigerians.

The statement reads, “As we observe Palm Sunday, we remember a powerful moment. Jesus entered Jerusalem with calm resolve, at a time of uncertainty and expectation. It was not a show of force, but a message of peace, purpose, and hope. In a tense atmosphere, he chose humility; riding on a colt, not in the trappings of power. That choice still speaks to us today.

“Across Nigeria, many are feeling the weight of the times. The cost of living is rising. For countless families, daily life is getting harder. Events far beyond our borders; especially tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, are unsettling global energy markets. The impact is already here. Fuel is more expensive. Transport costs are rising. Food prices are climbing. In moments like this, the calm and clarity of Palm Sunday matter even more.

“For many Nigerians, the concern is simple and immediate: how to cope, how to plan, how to stay afloat. When life feels this uncertain, the tone of national life matters. Words carry weight. Actions have consequences. Palm Sunday reminds us that in tense moments, people need reassurance. They need stability. They need the quiet confidence that those in positions of responsibility understand what they are going through.

“That is why the lesson of Palm Sunday matters for leadership. True leadership is not always loud. It is seen in restraint, in empathy, and in a steady focus on the common good. It is reflected in decisions that ease burdens, calm anxieties, and bring people together. This is a time for such wisdom”.

The CAN boss, therefore urged all Christians in Nigeria, to stand firm on faith, stand together and in peace.

“For the Church and all people of faith, Palm Sunday is also a call to responsibility. It reminds us of a rare moment when people from all walks of life came together with one purpose: to welcome the Messiah in hope, humility, and expectation. That same spirit is needed now. We must stand for peace. We must strengthen unity. We must support one another. In a season that can easily tilt towards tension, we must remain a steady source of light and hope.

“And to every Nigerian, especially the young and those feeling the strain most deeply, do not lose hope. The challenges are real, but they are not the end of the story.

“As we journey through this sacred season, may the spirit of Palm Sunday guide us towards quiet courage, shared purpose, and a renewed commitment to the good of all”, he urged.
