Expose More Women to Technology for Electoral Equality, WRAPA Advocates

By Prosper Okoye, Abuja
As the world marks the 2023 international women’s day, Wednesday, a non-governmental organization called the Women Rights Advancement & Protection Alternative (WRAPA) decried the state of women’s inequality in Nigeria’s political landscape.
“Gender inequality and discrimination in Nigeria affects women’s participation in elections as we’ve witnessed over the years, either as a voter or candidates, women frequently face social, physical, psychological, economic, and cultural obstacles that hinder the full exercise of their participation rights and they often suffer from discrimination and violence,” WRAPA’s senior program officer Yemisi Nathaniel said in a statement made available to DAILY ASSET.
Cases of violence against women are pronounced in the country. More recently, the social media and some local news media were awash with the image of a woman Mrs. Jennifer Efidi, who was attacked by political thugs while queuing to vote at her polling unit in Surulere, Lagos during the just concluded presidential and national assembly elections.
Furthermore, the program officer lamented that as of date, the number of females that won the Senate was three and the number that won the House of Representatives was 14 as opposed to eight and 11 in the 2019 general elections respectively.
“While we secured gains in the House of Representatives the number of female Senators is relatively low. Women encounter bias in politics which legitimizes the dominance of men. The political environment is hostile to women, negatively impacting their potential, retention, and progress. This is quite unsettling!”
Yemisi said this year’s theme – DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality – was apt as technology could be used to educate women on how to protect themselves as well as mobilize support for themselves to contest and win elections.
“Notwithstanding, we cannot ignore the impact of the digital world and how it affects women globally. WRAPA Nigeria stands in solidarity with numerous CSOs, CBOs, and WROs who have dedicated this year’s International Women’s Day to achieving gender equality in the context of digitalization
“Women are more likely to improve their political participation through the great use of the digital world. We have witnessed how powerful the digital world can be in promoting advocacy for a just cause and one of them being women’s participation in politics. Therefore we are encouraging women to learn and relearn the usage of technology, adopting all its professional ethics to promote women’s participation in future elections.
“Quite a number of women participated to be elected in the 2023 General Elections, but only a few knew who and what political platform they campaigned under, and the reason for their lack of popularity in the political space is that the digital platforms available to popularize them were not properly or even used.
“Today, WRAPA Nigeria calls on all institutions and people, especially women to break the digital gap within the shortest time possible with concerted efforts and voices to embrace the digital world and adopt its safe practices, innovation, and technology for gender equality.
“We hope that by the next elections, there will be a significant number of women elected into political offices. Until then, let’s go DigitALL!”

Diri Campaigns Against Drug Abuse, Trafficking

From Mike Tayese, Yenagoa
Bayelsa State Governor, Sen. Douye Diri yesterday, led a campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking as part of activities commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Diri advised people of the state, particularly the youths, to shun hard drugs and trafficking of illicit substances, saying they were harmful to their health and to the society.
The Bayelsa governor, who spoke shortly after the weekly Prosperity Walk exercise at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, also urged youths to develop themselves by acquiring a skill and work towards actualising their God-given potential.
“We just completed a nine to 10km walk, which is a test of our fitness. As it is said, health is wealth.
“Today is the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. We are not only observing the global campaign, we are also leading it here in Bayelsa.
“No one in his right senses goes to commit crime and violent acts except that individuals are under the influence of hard drugs. My advice to youths is to be self-confident, have the fear of God and develop your innate potential for you to become a star.”
He implored youths to emulate the shining example of a Bayelsa-born United States-based athlete, Victory Godah, who was discovered through the state’s sports programmes.
He commended her gesture of donating sporting equipment as a way of giving back to the state.
“Victory Godah from Ekeremor local government area was discovered here and because of her skill, she is now at the University of Minnesota, United States. She has given back to the state through sports equipment so that more of us can have that access.”
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, emphasised the importance of the weekly walk, stating that participants above 40 years would have their blood pressure controlled after taking about 5,000 steps.
Also, state chairman of the Drug Abuse, Addiction, Prevention and Rehabilitation Committee, Dr Peter Owonaro, said the committee’s outreach in the state had been a huge success, noting that a recent research indicated that the drug abuse prevalence rate in Bayelsa dropped by five per cent from 21.4 per cent.
Also, the state commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kanu Sunny, lauded the state government for its unprecedented support in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
He said the campaign was taken to secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions and encouraged all to join in the war against the menace.
