Djokovic Tests Positive for COVID-19

World tennis number one Novak Djokovic tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday and then apologised to all individuals who contracted the virus after playing in an exhibition tournament he organised.

Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, Croatia’s Borna Coric and Viktor Troicki have previously tested positive after playing in Djokovic’s Adria Tour exhibition tournament in Serbia and Croatia in the Balkan region.

Marco Panichi, the fitness coach of Djokovic who is the men’s world number one tennis player, and Dimitrov’s coach Christian Groh have also tested positive.

“The moment we arrived in Belgrade we went to be tested,” Djokovic said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that he was not showing any symptoms.

“My result is positive, just as Jelena’s (wife), while the results of our children are negative.

“I am extremely sorry for each individual case of infection. I hope that it will not complicate anyone’s health situation and that everyone will be fine.

“I will remain in self-isolation for the next 14 days, and repeat the test in five days.”

The organisers then listed a number of events now cancelled as a result.

These include the remainder of the Adria Tour, the two-day event on July 3 and July 4 in Banja Luka, Bosnia.

Also affected is the planned exhibition match with Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in Sarajevo on July 5.

Serbia has 13,092 registered cases and 263 dead due to the pandemic but both Serbia and Croatia eased lockdown measures weeks before the tournament.

As a result, players were not obliged to observe social distancing rules in either country.

The tournament witnessed packed stands during the opening leg in Belgrade, with players hugging at the net, playing basketball, posing for pictures and attending press conferences together.

The 33-year-old Djokovic organised nights out in Belgrade for the players and pictures and videos of him dancing with the other participants at his event were posted on social media.

“Prayers up to all the players that have contracted COVID-19,” said Nick Kyrgios, retweeting a video of the players dancing shirtless in Belgrade.

“Don’t @ me for anything I’ve done that has been `irresponsible’ or classified as `stupidity’ —- this takes the cake,” said the temperamental Australian, who was placed on probation by the men’s ATP Tour over his behaviour last year.

The professional circuit was halted in early March as countries closed borders and imposed lockdowns to contain the spread of the virus.

Tottenham Edge Manchester United 4-3 in Thrilling League Cup Win

Dominic Solanke’s brace helped Tottenham Hotspur edge a rip-roaring League Cup quarter-final game with Manchester United by a 4-3 win.

The win ensures that Tottenham are still in hunt of a first trophy since 2008.

Spurs were in cruise control when Solanke rifled home his second in the 54th minute to add to his first-half opener and Dejan Kulusevski’s effort 46 seconds into the second half.

Tottenham’s back-up goalkeeper Fraser Forster pressed the self-destruct button, though, as his two errors set up a nervy finale.

First Manchester United substitute Joshua Zirkzee tapped in after Forster’s pass out from the back had been intercepted before Amad Diallo blocked his clearance to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes left.

Ange Postecoglou’s men were teetering on the brink of collapse at this point, but captain Son Heung Min scored directly from a corner with two minutes left despite protestations from keeper Altay Bayindir.

It ensured Jonny Evans’ stoppage-time header was a mere consolation as Spurs march on towards the semi-finals.

The loss left Ruben Amorim to pick the bones out of the third defeat of his short tenure. (dpa/NAN)

He explained that his team had improved by scoring five goals in their last three matches and expressed optimism that they would do better in subsequent games.
