Days after the Chairman of Katcha local government area of Niger State,  Danlami Abdullahi  Saku was assaulted and seriously  injured over his inability  to settle  a campaign  loan he obtained,  the State Police  Command said three suspects were now in their  custody  over the incident.

Niger State Police Command Spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun  in a release on Wednesday said  On 16/06/2024 at about 1800hrs, information was received at Katcha Div that the Chairman Katcha LGA Hon.

Danlami Abdullahi Saku was attacked by some miscreants along Saku-Gadza village after the Sallah prayer at his village Saku, Katcha LGA.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer,   the attack was allegedly reported to be linked to a debt issue between the Chairman and one Yanda of the same area.

He noted that the Chairman sustained serious injury during the attack and he was taken to Gen. Hospital Bida, and later referred to another hospital for further treatment.

A preliminary investigation was conducted at Katcha Div and three suspects were later identified, apprehended and transferred to Bida Area Command.

The suspects arrested are; Alh. Abdullahi Kasimu 68yrs of Gadza village, Katcha, Alh. Baba Moh’d 30yrs of the same village and Ahmadu Moh’d 25yrs.

The suspects were transferred to SCID on June 21st for discreet investigation and prosecution.

“During interrogation, Kasimu narrated that he lent the victim over a million naira since August, 2023 and that several attempts to recover the money proved abortive.

“He further said that on June 16th, the victim promised to come and see him, and while he was on the way after the Sallah prayer, his son Ahmadu Moh’d, his in-law Alh. Baba Moh’d among others accosted the Chairman, had an altercation and inflicted serious injuries on the victims”

The State Police Command acknowledged that the victim was about to transfer the money to him at the point before being rushed to the hospital.

However, the suspects are under investigation in SCID, Minna. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend others at large, and they will be charged to court for prosecution immediately after investigations.

There was a drama as the sacrificial ram of the Chief Imam of the Mista Ali community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Imam Abdulkadir went missing on the eve of the Ed-el-Kabir.

Abdulkadir’s ram was reportedly stolen during a downpour in the area on the eve of the Ed-el-Kabir.

An Imam in the community, Haruna Yaqub, disclosed this during the sermon, shortly after the two Raka’at prayers.

Yaqub, who condemned the incident, described it as “insensitive”.

He added that the act showed that people lack fear for God.

The Imam said, “The Ram of our Chief Imam, which he purposely brought to sacrifice, has been stolen in the night.

We are really shocked by the incident. We were surprised to hear this story. This means that people are not God-fearing.

“It is scary that people have gone to the extent of stealing ram meant for religious activity.”

Speaking further, he urged people to be God-fearing and not engage in either stealing or any act of criminality.

He stressed that everyone will account for their actions on earth and hereafter.

“It is high time people repented and took the path of Allah. It is not too late. People should stop committing bad things and act according to Allah’s commandments,” he urged.

Police Operatives serving in Emene Division of Enugu State Command, working with law-abiding citizens on Sunday around 7pm, recovered a Beretta pistol with thirty-six (36) rounds of 9mm calibre ammunition in a bush at Airport Corner, by Old Abakaliki Road, Emene, and Enugu.

According to a press statement by the Police Public Relation Officer Enugu State Command Headquarters, Daniel Ndukwe said that the exhibits are suspected to have been abandoned by criminal elements on the hot trail of the police operatives for allegations of armed robberies.

Furthermore in a different operation, one Eze Ebuka, aged 24, Nnamdi Chukwuemeka, aged 21, and Friday Ilo, aged 31, all males, were arrested on June 7, 2024, around 2 p.

m., by police operatives serving in the Awkunanaw Division of the State Command. Their arrest followed the conduct of a covert operation by the operatives upon the receipt of complaints about the theft of several motor vehicle batteries at a construction site in Awkunanaw, Enugu.

It stated that Eze Ebuka and Nnamdi Chukwuemeka, who were initially arrested in the act, upon interrogation confessed to having stolen many batteries, as alleged, and sold them to Friday Ilo, who was later arrested. Fifteen (15) batteries, including those of articulated and other motor vehicles, and tricycle, were recovered from them.

The suspects will be arraigned and prosecuted once investigations are concluded.

SACA Reiterates Campaigns Against Oil Spillages In Niger Delta

A Non-governmental organization (NGO), Stakeholders Alliance for Corporate Accountability (SACA), last recently said they have not relented but consistently intensified its campaigns against oil spillages in the Niger Delta region.

The NGO which was founded by a Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Kevin O’Hara exclusively organized an enlightenment/training programme for women in Bayelsa state.

The programme tagged, “Action Reflection On Impacts of Oil Spillages and Human Rights” drew women leaders from 20 rural communities in Bayelsa State to reflect and share actions they are taking to reduce crude oil spillages and its associated risks to environment and humans in their communities.

Daily Asset gathered that SACA is funded by Misean Cara of the Republic of Ireland and the St. Patrick’s Missionary Society (SPS) of the Catholic Church.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Executive Director of SACA, Kingsley Ozegbe said the rationale behind the event was to further take the engagement on the dangers of oil spills to the rural communities through women.

He hinted that the event was exclusively focused on women because they are worst hit by hazards linked to exposure to crude oil spills, emphasizing that any harm on children, husbands, wards and the communities directly weighs women down as they increase their burden to care for the sick and grief when death occurs.

Ozegbe stressed that women are much more emotionally stressed than men when their loved ones are sick and die.

Our source learnt that the programme is organized by the NGO as part of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP) which is an instrument that consist 31 principles that the UN adopted to protect the rights of citizens, hold all companies and government to account to Respect and Remedy human rights abuses/violations as they conduct their business enterprises.

While cautioning against third party interference on oil and gas installations, Ozegbe expressed regrets that available data indicated that a large percentage of spillages in the Niger Delta region were caused by individual and groups interfering with oil facilities, thereby posing serious harm to the environment and people in communities and their sources of livelihood.Which SACA has been saddled with since it’s inception and will not relent.

The SACA boss said: “A recent research carried out by Roland Hodler and Anna Bruederle of the University Of St. Gallen Switzerland on the effects of oil spillages in Nigeria showed that anyone who lives 10km away from the site of any oil spill is likely going to be affected by the hazardous impacts of the spills.

“We’ve today invited women from 20 communities across the 8 LGAs of Bayelsa state to further enlighten them on the effects of oil spillages. We invited women because they’re the worst hit by these effects.

“it’s widely reported that continuous exposure to crude oil spills causes miscarriage, still birth, deforms children and several neonatal challenges”.

The NGO’s boss added that clinical investigation in Rivers State on persons directly involved in unregulated processing of crude oil, transporting and selling of the products in local communities showed that they have traces of petroleum in their urine and blood, thus, increasing the likelihood of high incidence of cancer and other ailments amongst youths and women in the region.

In a presentation tagged, ‘ Impact of crude oil spill on Environment, health, food security and food safety’, key resource person, Dr Briggs Bieye Renner of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State re-emphasized the negative impacts of oil spills.

He identified exposure routes of crude oil to humans as oral ingestion of food and water contaminated by it, inhalation of contaminated air, and dermal contacts by bathing water contaminated with crude oil or mixing crude oil with body lotions/creams, amongst other.

Briggs noted that incomplete combustion of crude oil is a great source of air pollution in the region.

The resource person advised communities affected by crude oil pollution to put pressure on individuals and oil companies to stop further pollution and strongly demand for remediation of all crude oil impacted sites before the multinational companies divest their onshore assets.

He said: “Affected communities and people must begin to protect their livelihoods from crude oil spills, and demand for payment of adequate compensation in accordance with international best practices”.

Other resource persons who made presentations include, the Programme Manager of SACA, Augustine Anyio; the Director of Petroleum and Pollution, Bayelsa state Ministry of Environment, Reuben Enai and the Director of Public Health of the Bayelsa state Ministry of Health, Dr. Jones Stow paper dwelt on health effects of oil spillage on human ,children ,pregnancy and adults.

Presentations were also made by the Director of Agricultural Services, Bayelsa State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mrs. Sarah Udisi, the Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa state Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Diri Ogbere, who seek for information that could unravel any attack on critical assets and infrastructure, which is the mandate of the NSCDC” We need vital information and we are prepared to keep them confidentially.”

While the Head of Legal and Enforcement, National Human Rights Commission, Vining Goselle,they are  saddled with enforcement of  due diligence to safeguard against human abuses.
