Bizarre as Sen. Adeyemi says Abia is Governed by Drunkards
The senator representing Kogi West in the Nigerian senate, Smart Adeyemi on Tuesday surprised not a few of his colleagues when he went on the offensive by describing the leaders of Abia state as drunkards.
This all-time low point was reached during a debate on a motion on the urgent need for the restoration and revalidation of the Safe School Initiative in Nigeria.
Adeyemi while contributing on the motion suddenly deviated and also called the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, a ‘champagne drinking man’.
The motion was sponsored by Stephen Odey (Cross River North).
In his motion, Odey noted that the “Safe School Initiative” launched in 2014 to promote the security and safety of schools, pupils, student, teachers, and facilities has not been effective.
He noted that the increase in cases of insecurity in the country, with the target at schools in diverse locations was a major pointer to the fact that the initiative has never worked.
The lawmaker referred to the kidnap of the Chibok and Dapchi School Girls in Borno and Yobe States respectively, the Kankara School Boys in Katsina State and, the recent kidnap of students of Government Science College, Kagara in Rafilga Local Government Area of Niger State, which he said had exposed the unimaginable decadence and dilapidation in the schools in Nigeria. He further drew inference from the viral pictures of the school environments which showed clearly dilapidated infrastructure.
However, after a few lawmakers had made their contributions, Adeyemi stood up to make his own intervention. He started by on a praise singing of the governor of his state, Yahaya Bello of kogi state, whom he claimed to have taken serious measures in tackling insecurity in his state.
He said; “While some governors are doing their best, Kogi State is lucky to have a governor who has taken the issue of security as a serious priority.
“Some governors are committed to the protection of their people, in my state the governor awarded contracts for the renovations of schools and provides security services to them.
“In some states of Nigeria today, where we have highly intelligent people, highly educated people, very enterprising people, like Abia, they are governed by drunkards. The governor of Abia is a champagne drinking man.
“Abia people are impoverished more than ever before. Abia people are unfortunate,” he said.
The former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) did not elaborate on why he chose to pick on the state on his bizarre display.
However, he was quickly stopped by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who turned off his (Adeyemi) microphone while bewildered senators were heard murmuring in the chamber.
Lawan also cautioned Adeyemi against the use of foul language to address the red chamber.
This also prompted Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, to caution his colleague and demanded that an apology be made to the Abia State governor, but Adeyemi refused saying his governor was also disparaged by Abaribe in the social media.
But Abaribe denied ever using any insulting language on Governor Bello and added that people must not always take everything they see in the social media seriously because some people do use other peoples’ identity to post comments at times.
Certainly, the last may not have been heard of this incident.

Tinubu’s Re-election: Don’t Allow Repeat of 2023, Tompolo Tells Lagos
Leader of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, Government Ekpemupolo, has advised the people of Lagos State not to allow a repeat of what played out in the 2023 election in the state in the 2027 presidential election.
He called on the people to take advantage of the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) to enable them vote massively for one of their own, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, who was represented by Kestin Pondi, gave the charge in Lagos, on Tuesday, during a campaign rally for Tinubu’s reelection, during which he also presented 57 campaign vehicles to state coordinators.
“What happened in 2023 must not repeat. He must win convincingly in 2027,” he said.
He described Tinubu as a selfless and courageous leader who did not care about his reelection but went on carrying out bold reforms that are already yielding results and which many Nigerians are benefitting from.
Ekpemupolo pointed out that, the fact that Lagos is today referred to as a city for all Nigerians is all thanks to the foundation laid by President Tinubu, which successive governors have built on, and now that he has a higher responsibility, there was the need for his own people to stand solidly behind him.
“Lagos is the city for all Nigerians because someone stood firm to restructure and reform it. “From the time he came into office in 1999 up to 2007 that he left, Lagos was the envy of other states.
“Today, he has a higher responsibility, an opportunity to replicate the Lagos success story in Nigeria through reforms. There is massive development across the states today because reforms are working,” he stated.
Ekpemupolo said to ensure that the reforms continue, the people of Lagos and all Nigerians must take the message to every door and everyone that Tinubu is the man for Nigeria.
Also speaking, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, pointed out that Nigeria was attaining economic stability under the Tinubu-led administration.
He advised the people to ignore the antics of opposition politicians who have no plan for Nigeria, but only desperate to win elections and have been moving from one party to another, demonstrating a lack of consistency, which he emphasised was bad quality for any leader.
Sanwo-Olu said Tinubu has constructed more roads than previous administrations in three years, given succour to students, increased minimum wage and made money available for payment of pensions.
“Why won’t we vote for him? The entire Lagos is for Tinubu. All our votes are for Tinubu. You’ve done it before, you’ll do it again. “We will touch every corner of Lagos with our message to reelect Tinubu. Go out and convince everyone that Tinubu is the candidate to vote,” the governor stated.
Earlier, National Coordinator of the movement, Sunday Asuku, urged the people of Lagos to go out and get their PVCs to enable them vote massively for Tinubu.
“We must stand our ground and deliver Tinubu with PVCs, not with guns or intimidation. Lagos must not put their son, Tinubu, to shame,” he stated.
He said in the 2027 presidential election, Nigerians must make a bold statement to retire “serial contesters” who he described as “enemies of Nigeria.”
