Two days to the election of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi state council, the electoral committee Monday, announced the indefinite postponement of the election.
According to a press release signed by the chairman and secretary of the committee, Umar Shira and Obed Hassan, the decision was taken with a view to supporting the current efforts of containing COVID- 19 pandemic that has become a serious issue of concern.
“The electoral committee of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bauchi 2020 wishes to convey decision of the National Secretariat of the union to put on hold the April 22nd scheduled election till further notice.
“The union is urging all members to await further directives regarding the conduct of the election, assuring that the process would be concluded once the the situation in the country improves” The statement read.
The committee assured all contestants that the pre-voting processes completed will be treated as it is so that only election will hold on a new date to be decided by the national secretariat.
They asked members of the union to continue to support the government and health personnel in dealing with the situation by being more supportive in the area of awareness creation and public education on the pandemic.
Bauchi had on Sunday recorded another new case of the virus.
