FCTA Celebrates First HOS for Exceptional Contributions

By Laide Akinboade, Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA, at the weekend paid tribute to Dr. Udo Samuel Atang, its pioneer Head of Civil Service, for his distinguished service and unwavering commitment to public administration.
Speaking at the event, Dr.
Atang reflected on the strides made under his leadership, particularly after the passage of the Civil Service Commission bill, which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed into law in 2024. “With the establishment of the FCT Civil Service Commission, we have overcome years of career stagnation and frustration,” he said, acknowledging the challenges faced by FCT staff who could not progress beyond the directorate level for many years.Dr. Atang lauded the swift actions of the Minister of the FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike, who upon assuming office, swiftly implemented reforms to address career progression challenges in the FCTA. “In just three weeks, the Minister moved us from a point where staff career progress was capped at the director level, to the appointment of 13 permanent secretaries, creating a more fulfilling career path,” Atang noted. His remarks highlighted the pivotal role of the Civil Service Commission Act in unlocking opportunities for staff advancement, fostering productivity, and boosting morale across the workforce. He assured attendees of his continued availability for guidance and support in his new capacity as Senior Special Assistant on Administration to the Minister.
Tributes poured in from various quarters, with FCTA leaders extolling Dr. Atang’s leadership and contributions to the development of the territory’s civil service. The Permanent Secretary for Youth Development, Mrs. Nancy Nathan, described Dr. Atang was a leader who introduced innovative policies that transformed service delivery and staff capacity building. “Today, we are celebrating a visionary leader whose dedication and wisdom have shaped the FCT’s public service into a model for efficiency,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, the President of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), Mrs. Rifkatu Lortyer also praised Dr. Atang for championing the welfare of junior staff, ensuring timely salary payments, and advocating for training opportunities.
Her heartfelt plea to Dr. Atang to address unresolved staff training issues underscored the deep respect and trust that FCT workers have in his leadership. As Dr. Atang steps into his new role, he leaves behind a legacy of reform and progress that will continue to impact the FCTA for years to come.
Earlier the Acting Director of Reform Coordination and Service Improvement Department, Dr. Jumai Ahmadu expressed gratitude to everyone who honored the invitation, emphasizing that FCTA is one big family where differences are small and people respond when called upon. He specifically thanked the Permanent Secretaries of Treasury, Education, and Area Council, highlighting the swift approval process that enabled the event’s success. Dr. Ahmadu noted that the overwhelming support and resources received were a testament to Dr. Udo Samuel Atang’s goodwill and the love from his staff, earned through his exceptional character and leadership.
Dr. Ahmadu reflected on Dr. Atang’s transition, recalling his birthday celebration in March, which was initially thought to mark the end of his service. However, with the six-month extension and new appointment as Senior Special Assistant on Administration, Dr. Ahmadu hopes Dr. Atang’s value will be felt nationally, beyond FCTA. He acknowledged Dr. Atang’s irreplaceable institutional memory and expressed appreciation to directors and contributors for their support.

Trump Tells Iran to Make Nuclear Deal ‘Before it is too Late’

U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Iran to conclude an agreement with Washington on its controversial nuclear programme, amid a series of Israeli strikes on nuclear facilities and military leaders.

Israeli media reported that Tehran had retaliated with an attack involving about 100 drones, all of which were shot down.
“I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal,” Trump wrote.
“The U.S. makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, BY FAR, and Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come and they know how to use it,” Trump wrote. (dpa/NAN)
