FG Delivers Water, Sanitation Facilities to 92 Unity Colleges Nationwide
By Tony Obiechina, Abuja
The Federal government has delivered Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities to 92 federal unity colleges across the country, under the first phase of the project.
The Minister of Education, Prof.
Tahir Mamman, disclosed this during a presentation on the progress of the interventions by the National Project Coordinator, Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), Amina Haruna in Abujaat the weekend. He said that the WASH facilities would provide for a new rebranding of the schools, as well as give opportunities to learners to learn in a conducive environment.
“This is what we want to see at our basic and secondary education levels. By the time we are done with the second phase, we will be having brand new facilities in our colleges.
“If we have this in place, we will be making little efforts to persuade learners to go to school. We will be rebranding our schools in terms of facilities and lifelong skilling, and then we will be on the way to deliver on the agenda of our president,” he said.
On her part, Haruna said that the interventions had impacted positively on the wellbeing of learners and the entire community.
She explained that the 40 per cent of the phase one project for WASH facilities in the FUCs had already been completed, adding that the remaining 60 per cent, which is for infrastructural interventions, would commence soon.
“The disbursement of the balance of 60 percent of the intervention fund to the 92 FUCs will be for the implementation of the next phase of the interventions.
“These interventions are for the construction of classrooms, laboratories, multipurpose hall, kitchen, ICT centres, provision of furniture, teaching and learning materials in the schools,” she added.
Out of the 115 unity colleges across the country, the intervention for the 92 colleges was provided for by AGILE.
However, interventions in the remaining Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTC) were handled by the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS), a World Bank supported project.

INEC Has No Candidates, Party – Amupitan
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission’s neutrality ahead of the 2027 general election, saying INEC has no candidate or political party to favour.
In a post obtained from INEC’s X handle on Sunday, Amupitan stated this during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Amb.
Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, as part of the commission’s stakeholder engagement and preparations for the 2027 elections. The visit formed part of activities surrounding INEC’s planned interactive meeting with staff and readiness assessment at the zonal level.
The INEC chairman was accompanied by National Commissioners, the Acting Director-General of the Electoral Institute, his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Technical Assistant, Chief of Staff, Special Aides and other senior officials of the commission.
Amupitan described traditional institutions as important stakeholders in the electoral process because of their influence and reach within communities.
He said elections were fundamentally about the social contract between citizens and those entrusted with public office, stressing that public trust was essential to the success of democracy.
According to him, INEC has commenced preparations early because of the size and complexity of conducting elections across Nigeria.
He said the commission had moved away from last-minute preparations and was testing, auditing and strengthening its operational systems well ahead of the 2027 polls.
Amupitan assured the Emir that INEC remained committed to neutrality, fairness and transparency in the conduct of elections.
“We have no candidates, we have no political party, we have no interest other than the sovereign will of the people of Nigeria,” the INEC chairman said.
He added that the commission would continue engaging traditional institutions and other stakeholders as it intensifies preparations for the 2027 General Election.
