Girlfriend Attacks Boyfriend’s Co-worker with Hot Water in Kano
From Aliyu Askira, Kano
A 23-year-old hotel worker, Victoria Emmanuel, is receiving treatment for severe burns after she was allegedly attacked with boiling water by her colleague’s girlfriend in Kano.
The incident occurred recently at a residence in Kawo, where Victoria had gone after closing from work.
She accompanied her colleague, 28-year-old Shadrach Michael, to pick up items for her upcoming birthday celebration. Shadrach reportedly suggested a brief stop at his apartment before they proceeded to the market.According to Victoria’s sister, Rosemary Emmanuel, trouble began when Shadrach’s girlfriend, Chioma Michael, called to say she was visiting.
Although Shadrach discouraged her from coming, Chioma allegedly arrived minutes later and met Victoria in the apartment.Rosemary narrated that Chioma claimed she wanted to take a warm bath and began boiling water. When the gas finished, she borrowed more from a neighbour and continued heating it.
Moments later, she allegedly carried the pot and poured its contents on Victoria, burning her face, back, chest and hands.
Shadrach was said to have hit Chioma in shock as she fled, allegedly taking Victoria’s phone with her. Rosemary further claimed Victoria was locked inside the apartment for nearly five hours—from about 3:00 p.m. to nearly 8:00 p.m.—without medical attention.
The family later received a call from Victoria, who had been taken to Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital. She was subsequently transferred to a clinic in Nomansland due to the unavailability of a doctor.
The matter was reported at the Hotoro Police Division around midnight. Police arrested Chioma’s mother to compel the suspect to appear, and Chioma later turned herself in. The case has since been transferred to the Bompai Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Rosemary said the family has not decided on legal action, alleging that Chioma has shown no remorse. She also dismissed rumours of a relationship between Victoria and Shadrach, insisting they were only co-workers.
Victoria is still receiving treatment and is said to be responding well.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Kano Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said he would verify the matter but had not responded as of the time of filing the report.
Meanwhile, a Magistrate Court sitting in Kawaji, Dakata, on Monday ordered Chioma’s remand at the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre till December 9.
During the hearing, both Chioma and Rosemary presented their accounts. Counsel for the defendant, Chris Njogwu, applied for bail, but Magistrate Zuhura Madaki refused the request.
The magistrate noted that Chioma was charged with attempting to commit culpable homicide under Section 229 of the Penal Code, an offence punishable with life imprisonment or, in some cases, death. She added that suspects charged with capital offences can only be granted bail by a High Court judge under exceptional circumstances.
The case was adjourned to December 9 for further mention.

“We deeply express our regrets and concern over what happened to you and we want to tell you that you are not alone. Your houses may have been burnt, your children, wives, husbands may have been killed but you are not alone. They may have inflicted pains on you but testimony is coming and part of what we intend to do is the beginning of the testimony.”
“In a transparent manner we are giving gifts to 1000 families who will each receive a 25kg bag of rice, a quarter bag of maize, garri and bean, 2 liters of palm oil, 3 liters of groundnut oil, sugar and condiments including sachets of salt and maggi.

“If God opens another door we will come again. Those who are tormenting the church and thinking we will not survive, God will expose them and give us victory. Gradually God is raising people to speak for us. When recent issues came up, God raised people in Benue and they spoke out and God will raise more voices for us. Go home happily knowing you have brothers here in Nigeria and outside Nigeria who care about you.”
