Grace of God, Compassion for Humanity Endears Me to Become Governor -Alia
From Attah Ede, Makurdi
Benue state Governor, Hyacinth Alia has stated that his rededication to the path of service to humanity with absolute commitment and compassion saw him becoming governor of the State.
Alia who said this during his 34th Priestly anniversary held at the IBB square, Makurdi at the weekend maintained that in all he does, he was reminded of the calling to be a vessel of God’s grace.
He said 34 years of service as a priest has been a period of offering hope, healing, finding purposes and guiding others on their spiritual journey.
The clergy Governor added that it has been three decades of resilience and undying quest of service to humanity, averring that he has gone through a lot of trials that tested his resolve.
Said he, “there have been moments of joy that feel like I have been called to serve. The journey has been guided by compassion, kindness and sacrifice instilled in me during my years in the seminar.
“Two (2) years ago, the journey took an unexpected dimension and pragmatic turn that took from the pulpit to the public sphere to serve in a larger platform. It was a decision that did not come to me easily. It was a child of necessity though with consequences.
“The families I ministered to struggled with poor health care, lack of education and economic hardship. I saw the farmer battling against the odds, the teacher nurturing and going home hungry after work, a father working tirelessly and barely making ends meet.
“I saw the civil servants going home empty after meritorious service to the State, the youth with dreams as stars in the sky but with opportunities as scarce as water in the desert
“These are the people I ministered to and they prayed for change. While my sermons could sooth their spirit, but I knew their feelings that were inflicted by poverty, injustice and inequality all occasioned by bad governance and policies. It meant combining my vocation as a clergy and the rough and turbulent road of government.
“Since I stepped into governance, my goal has been to uplift the lives of the youth through job creation as well as establish industry and provide infrastructure for the people. The impact of job creation in the State cannot be over emphasized.
“The road infrastructures including the under passes in different parts of the State is to enhance easy movement of people, goods and service is simply my administration’s way of touching lives”
He said that he has been rendering service to humanity and having achieved this milestone it called for celebration because some of his classmates whom they started together were 34, but some of them had gone to be with the Lord.
While commenting on the conflict in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State, the Governor lauded the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for the dissolution and constitution of a 7 man Cttee to unite the party, describing as piece of misinformation, that primaries have been conducted in the party for the forthcoming LG election.
Alia appreciated the National working committee of APC for resolving the State working committee and instituting a unity caretaker committee as a way of restoring peace.
He called on the public to disregard any mischief intended to misinform them that the local government congress have been conducted, describing it as infringement of some politicians imagination.
The governor appreciated the organisers of the event for honouring him and appreciated his classmates for attending the event in solidarity with him and directed that all gifts intended for his anniversary be channeled to Mama Abayol orphanage home.
Tor Tiv Prof. James Ayati who spoke on behalf of traditional rulers in the State congratulated Fr. Alia in his years in the Lord’s vineyard, saying he was chosen by the God to continue with his work as governor of the State.
He appealed to people of the State to continue to support fr Alia to deliver on his campaign promises and provide good leadership irrespective of political linkage for overall good of the State.

Hoodlums Attack Etsu Lokoja’s Palace, Raze Properties
Some suspected hoodlums on Saturday attacked the palace of Etsu Lokoja, Chief Emmanuel Dauda-Shelika, Nyamkpa IV, burning properties within the premises, including a vehicle.
The palace, located on plot 306, New Layout, Lokoja, was allegedly attacked by hoodlums at about 1:00 am on Saturday.
The Nupe Natives of Lokoja Development Union were planning to host the 2nd edition of the Nupe Natives end-of-the-year event, tagged “Lokoja ’24 Nupe Cultural Fiesta,” on Dec.
21, 2024, before the incident occurred. The event was, however, aborted due to the unfortunate attack.
Dauda-Shelika said this on Monday in Lokoja that he heard a big bang on my door at around 1 am.
“I woke up to check through the window, wondering what could have happened.
“Then, I suddenly saw wildfire coming out of my car that was set ablaze by attackers.
“I knew it was an attack on the palace, and therefore I could not come out because of fear of being attacked. So, I managed to come out through the back door and scaled the fence to escape for my life.
“Thereafter, I came out to the road and realised that all my neighbours in the community were on the ground trying hard to quench the fire, but unfortunately the car was burnt as well as other properties inside it.”
The traditional ruler appealed to the government and security agencies to investigate the cause of the attack and bring perpetrators and their sponsors to justice.
He admonished Nupe natives in Lokoja to avoid any reprisal attack but continue to remain peaceful and law abiding and allow the government and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation of the attack.
“We are appealing to Gov. Ahmed Ododo and security agencies to please use their good offices to investigate this unfortunate incident and bring to justice whoever is concerned, whether directly or indirectly.
“We also want the government to kindly visit our issues by recognising and grading the stool of Etsu Lokoja, which had been in existence before colonisation,” he said.
He stated that the Lokoja Local Government Area chairman and his security team came for an on-the-spot assessment that Saturday morning, as well as the police and other security outfits.
The National President, Nupe Natives Union Lokoja, Alh. Abubakar Ndashite, said the event scheduled for Saturday was a celebration of Nupe cultural heritage and not any form of coronation as being insinuated from some quarters.
Ndashite, who doubles as the chairman of the planning committee, said the aborted event was to project the Nupe spirit and culture as well as the rich history of the diversely composed Lokoja community and the peaceful and harmonious coexistence among her.
He expressed his displeasure over the aborted cultural event, noting that the union had expended so much on it, and urged the government to bring perpetrators to book. (NAN)
