Group Kicks as FUHSO Appoints Acting VC
By David Torough, Abuja
The Governing Council of the Federal University of Health sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO) has appointed Professor Ediga Agbo as the acting Vice Chancellor following the suspension of the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Prof Innocent Ujah.
Following this development, a group of Concerned Idoma Unity Forum has accused the Governing Council of the institution of not following the stipulated guidelines in the University Act on the removal of a substantive VC.
It would be recalled that in a recent press statement by the Coordinator, Information, Publication and Public Relations, of FUHSO, James Onogwu, for the Registrar said Prof. Ediga Agbo emerged acting Vice Chancellor of the University during the special meeting of the Governing Council held on October 27.
According to the press statement, the emergency meeting was headed by the Pro Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council of FUHSO, Ohieku Muhammed Salami.
He further stated that the Pro- Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council and Members, earlier during the meeting, suspended the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Innocent Ujah for alleged gross misconduct disregarding its authority.
Prof Agbo, the statement stated, is a Professor of Microbiology a native of Otukpo local government, Benue State. Prof Ediga Agbo has since assumed duty as the acting VC of FUHSO for a period of six months.
This did not go down well with the Concerned Idoma Unity Forum where in a press statement by its chairman, Agada Johnson said the suspension of the pioneer Vice Chancellor orchestrated by the chairman of the governing council is not in the best interest of the University and Idoma nation as due process was not followed .
He explained that section 2AAA of the University Act passed by the National Assembly in 2003 stipulated that the Vice Chancellor can be removed by the Visitor after due consultation with Council and Senate acting through the Minister of Education.
Speaking further on the process of removing a substantive Vice Chancellor, the VC can be removed on grounds of misconduct or inability to discharge the function of the office through a proposal of removal and a joint committee of Council and Senate shall be constituted with three members which according to them was not done in this case.
The Group while stating that Prof Agbo is qualified to be appointed as acting VC ” but we are seeing a serious fault line which has to be corrected because an injustice done to one is an injustice done to all. Why the VC was suspended without giving opportunity to defend himself and was indeed dar away South Korea on a national delegation”
Agada noted that downplaying laid down rules by the Council mitigates a deepening sense of disillusionment among stakeholders, and commended the pioneer VC for showing unwavering commitments in pioneering the fast growing Medical University in Idoma land from the foundation along with his management team.

Hoodlums Attack Etsu Lokoja’s Palace, Raze Properties
Some suspected hoodlums on Saturday attacked the palace of Etsu Lokoja, Chief Emmanuel Dauda-Shelika, Nyamkpa IV, burning properties within the premises, including a vehicle.
The palace, located on plot 306, New Layout, Lokoja, was allegedly attacked by hoodlums at about 1:00 am on Saturday.
The Nupe Natives of Lokoja Development Union were planning to host the 2nd edition of the Nupe Natives end-of-the-year event, tagged “Lokoja ’24 Nupe Cultural Fiesta,” on Dec.
21, 2024, before the incident occurred. The event was, however, aborted due to the unfortunate attack.
Dauda-Shelika said this on Monday in Lokoja that he heard a big bang on my door at around 1 am.
“I woke up to check through the window, wondering what could have happened.
“Then, I suddenly saw wildfire coming out of my car that was set ablaze by attackers.
“I knew it was an attack on the palace, and therefore I could not come out because of fear of being attacked. So, I managed to come out through the back door and scaled the fence to escape for my life.
“Thereafter, I came out to the road and realised that all my neighbours in the community were on the ground trying hard to quench the fire, but unfortunately the car was burnt as well as other properties inside it.”
The traditional ruler appealed to the government and security agencies to investigate the cause of the attack and bring perpetrators and their sponsors to justice.
He admonished Nupe natives in Lokoja to avoid any reprisal attack but continue to remain peaceful and law abiding and allow the government and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation of the attack.
“We are appealing to Gov. Ahmed Ododo and security agencies to please use their good offices to investigate this unfortunate incident and bring to justice whoever is concerned, whether directly or indirectly.
“We also want the government to kindly visit our issues by recognising and grading the stool of Etsu Lokoja, which had been in existence before colonisation,” he said.
He stated that the Lokoja Local Government Area chairman and his security team came for an on-the-spot assessment that Saturday morning, as well as the police and other security outfits.
The National President, Nupe Natives Union Lokoja, Alh. Abubakar Ndashite, said the event scheduled for Saturday was a celebration of Nupe cultural heritage and not any form of coronation as being insinuated from some quarters.
Ndashite, who doubles as the chairman of the planning committee, said the aborted event was to project the Nupe spirit and culture as well as the rich history of the diversely composed Lokoja community and the peaceful and harmonious coexistence among her.
He expressed his displeasure over the aborted cultural event, noting that the union had expended so much on it, and urged the government to bring perpetrators to book. (NAN)
