Group Laments Over Debt Injustice In African, Embarks On Campaign For Freedom From Debt In Benue
From Attah Ede Makurdi
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation(AHF)- Adaka Advocacy Club in Benue State, on Friday embarked on a “Freedom from Debt” campaign amongst stakeholders to advocate for foreign debt relief and restructuring for Nigeria and other African countries.
The organisation insisted that crushing debt burdens force government at all levels to prioritize debt servicing over crucial social services like healthcare, education, and youth empowerment.
Speaking during the campaign held in Adaka, a shrub in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, the chairman of AHF-Adaka Advocacy Club, Mr.
Usuwe A. Moses stated that many African countries including are constrained by an unfair global debt system. He maintained that the development has affected their ability to adequately fund essential services and opportunities for young people, saying that there is need for people or organisation to proffer actionable demands that could end the debt injustice being melted on developing countries in Africa.
He therefore advocated for guaranteed automatic, interest-free pauses on debt payments in all loan agreements when countries face public health crises or climate disasters such as COVID-19, Ebola virus, adding that a nation’s resources during a crisis must go toward protecting its people, not fulfilling financial obligations.
“Every dollar sent to a creditor during a crisis is a dollar that never reaches a classroom, a missing vaccine, a young person without work, or a family in need. Loan contracts must include immediate pauses during public health emergencies or climate disasters, ensuring that funds remain in the country to acquire essential medical supplies and products and support recovery efforts”, Moses stated.
On her part, the Public Relations Officer of the Club, Mrs. Idoko Lawrence, stated that AHF has taken the bull by the horn to embark on advocacy and campaign that would earn Nigeria and other African nations “freedom from debt.
She therefore demanded for Borrowers’ Forum that would create an international space for indebted countries in the Global South to unify their negotiation positions with creditors and seek for Implementation of automatic debt-service pauses during public health emergencies or climate disasters.
Mrs. Lawrence lamented that over the years government goes into borrowings with huge interest and after obtaining the loans, could not it to provide social services before repayment period.
“The situation has brought untold hardships to our country and state. Government would borrow with high interest rate and because the interest rate is higher compare to other European countries, government could not provide social amenity like water for us. Like here Adaka community where we live, there is no borehole, we trek in search of water for five to nine hours in day, promoting our children to be late to school”, she lamented.
In his remark, the chief of Adaka Mbagbange community, Chief Angbiashio Nicolas, commended AHF their community services, that the organisation has render tremendous help to many individuals and families in the State in the area healthcare
He particularly acknowledged that AHF has carried out so many free medical services in his domain and provide his subjects including women and girls children with sanitary kits, saying that he was also beneficiary as he was treated free of charge in one of their facilities when he was sick.
On his part, the Senior Advocacy and Marketing Manager, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF-Nigeria), Chief Steve Aborisade, disclosed that approximately 3.4 billion people live in countries that spend more on debt repayments than on health or education, stating that, in Africa, two in every three countries pay more in debt interest than they invest in the health of their citizens.
He noted that the global debt system was not designed with the developing world in mind, and the cost of leaving it unreformed is one that the poorest populations continue to bear.
According to him, rhere is a number that should stop every country and every international creditor in their tracks. Three trillion dollars. That is the approximate sum that poorer countries send back to wealthier ones every single year, through debt servicing and tax loopholes. The Global South is not simply a recipient of global generosity, and by most honest measures, it is a net financier of global wealth.
“The origins of this imbalance lie partly in history. When colonised nations gained independence, they inherited economies shaped to serve external markets, built around the export of raw materials, fossil fuels, and cash crops to fuel industrial growth in the global north.
“That left them with weakened domestic foundations and dependent on external financing to achieve real development – hospitals, roads, schools, and food systems. Borrowing to close that gap was a rational and necessary response to an engineered deficit, not a sign of mismanagement.
“The problem has always been the terms. Countries in the Global South pay between two and twelve times more in interest than wealthy nations, not because their governments are reckless, but because the system classifies them as less creditworthy and then uses that classification to justify the very conditions that make them so”, alluded.

2027: Youruba Activist, Ojo Canvasses Support Atiku
By Mike Odiakose, Abuja
Ahead of 2027 general election a good governance crusader from the South West, Dr Jackson Lekan Ojo has urged Nigerians to cast aside primodal ethnic and religious sentiments and support the candidature of Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Dr Ojo, who resigned his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) about two years ago over the failure of the government to meet the minimum expectations of Nigerians, declared that Atiku’s record as the Chairman of the National Economic Council speaks volume about his capacity to positively turn around the fortunes of Nigeria.
According to him, Atiku’s economic team achieved an unbeaten record till date without borrowing anything.
“We need an Atiku. We have seen what Atiku achieved when he was just ordinary Vice President and Head of the Economic Team. I would not be holding a mobile phone today if not for his economic team. Prior to that the telecommunication system in the country was battered but look at what the economic team did.
“They did not borrow? Even the money the military administrations borrowed they (Atiku’s team) worked towards it and the people wrote off our debts.
“Why won’t I follow Atiku, why won’t I mobilize for Atiku? I don’t need to know him one on one but I felt Nigeria deserves the best.
“It was during his period I got Mobile phone, built a house, bought a car and achieved a lot of things without knowing anybody or lobbying anyone. But if you do a government contract now you need to lobby to get your payment. Enough is enough.”
He expressed concern that some Nigerians are putting tribal, religious and regional issues as priority in choosing who to support in 2027.
“I wonder what is wrong with our brain, with our mentality and with our orientation in this part of the world. I was discussing the other day with a friend and he challenged me ‘why did you leave Bola Tinubu, Obi and you are supporting Atiku’s? I responded ‘why did you leave Atiku and support either Tinubu or Obi?
“He said because Tinubu and Obi are from the South. I laughed and asked him, as a Southerner, where is that fueling station where you are buying gas, petrol, diesel or kerosene less than a Northerner? Where is that supermarket where you buy groceries, foodstuff cheaper than a Northerner. He was dumbfounded and couldn’t say anything again.
“It is arrant nonsense when you criticize based on religion, tribe, ethnic groups, zone or region. It is madness, absolute stupidity. None of these matters.
“Why are Northerners serving under the administration of a Southerner? All the Northerners are supposed to have withdrawn their services under a southern president if we are going towards ethnicity.
“If you want to board an aircraft, have you ever asked who the pilot, the air hostesses and others are? If you go to a restaurant, have you ever asked if the cow is from where, the gari is from where, the rice is from where, is it Moslem people that sold the gari, is it Christians that sold the rice?
“If you want to gain admission into a school why didn’t you ask who is the principal of that school, is he a Moslem, a Southerner or a Northerner. If you want to enter university you have to ask about the Vice Chancellor, the Registrar, the Lecturers and others. If you are a Christian and a Moslem is the Lecturer then withdraw from the school. That is stupidity.
“In the present day the poverty that is raiding and bedeviling Nigeria; the people from Osun State, people from Oyo State, people from Ondo State, people from Lagos State, the Yoruba speaking Kwara, the Yoruba speaking Kogi, the Yoruba speaking Edo, I think they are not feeling it.
“You’ve not seen people in Lagos condemning this government?
“It is not that anybody hates President Bola Tinubu, no. But his government is bad, his government is wicked, his government is lawless, his government is against humanity.
“We are talking about his government; his government is corrupt. We are not saying Tinubu is corrupt, the President is not wicked, the President is very good but the system he is running is weak, it is reckless.”
